How much does assisted living cost in Omaha, NE?

In Omaha, the average cost of assisted living is $4,696 per month, based on A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This price usually covers housing, meals, and essential care services. Actual costs can vary depending on your loved one’s care needs, the community’s location, apartment size and layout, and the amenities or level of personal support offered.

In Omaha, the average monthly cost of assisted living is comparable to both the national average of $4,783 and Nebraska’s statewide average of $4,400.[01] This alignment reflects Omaha’s overall affordability, as the city’s cost of living is about 4% lower than the national average, according to the Economic Research Institute, although it is 9% higher than Nebraska’s average.[02]

Assisted living in Omaha costs more than independent living — about $3,009 per month on average — but is more affordable than memory care, which averages about $4,695 per month. These differences reflect the level of support each setting provides. If your parent begins to require more hands-on assistance, health oversight, or specialized services, their monthly costs may increase to ensure they receive the personalized care and safety they need.

How to pay for assisted living in Omaha

Many families in Omaha pay for assisted living by drawing from a mix of personal savings, proceeds from selling a home, long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and Nebraska’s Medicaid programs. Using a blend of these private and public resources can make high-quality care more accessible while giving families confidence that their loved one is receiving the support they need.

Private pay options

Families often use a combination of personal income and assets to help pay assisted living expenses. Common sources include:

VA benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers several financial programs that can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for assisted living. Benefits such as the Veterans Pension, Aid and Attendance, and Disability Compensation can help lower monthly care costs, while surviving spouses may also receive support through the Survivors Pension or Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).

Because VA benefits involve detailed applications and strict eligibility rules, navigating the process carefully is essential. Partnering with a VA-accredited benefits counselor can streamline the experience, reduce the risk of delays, and ensure your loved one receives all the assistance they’re entitled to.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps eligible seniors pay for certain health and long-term care services. For eligible residents in assisted living communities, Nebraska Medicaid covers personal care services in two ways:

  • Through the state’s regular Aged, Blind, and Disabled (ABD) program[04], and
  • Through the Aged and Disabled waiver for home and community-based services.[05]

Nebraska’s ABD Medicaid is an entitlement, meaning that services provided to any eligible resident will be covered. The Aged and Disabled waiver, however, is not an entitlement, so funding is limited and your loved one may be placed on a wait list.

Services covered by these programs may include:

Eligibility for NMAP is based on income and asset limits, as well as medical need.

Medicaid resources in Omaha, Nebraska

Elderly residents in Omaha can apply for the state’s Medicaid program:

  • Online through the iServe portal
  • By phone at 402-595-1178
  • In person at a local office of Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services

Medicare

Medicare provides health insurance for adults age 65 and older, as well as for younger individuals with qualifying medical conditions.[06] While Medicare doesn’t cover rent in assisted living, it can help reduce medical expenses by paying for prescriptions, durable medical equipment, and other approved health services.
