How much does assisted living cost in Chicago, IL?

In Chicago, the average monthly cost of assisted living is $6,222, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This rate includes rent, as well as any add-on costs, such as care services, transportation, or pet fees. However, the cost can vary widely depending on the area of the city. Assisted living costs tend to be higher north of downtown, and lower in neighborhoods south of downtown.

The average monthly cost of assisted living in Chicago is considerably higher than the national average of $4,758 and somewhat higher than Illinois’s statewide average of $5,491 per month.[01] This difference is likely due to Chicago’s cost of living, which is approximately 41% higher than the national average, according to the Economic Research Institute.[02]

In Chicago, assisted living generally costs a bit less than independent living, which averages around $6,374 per month, and is nearly the same price as memory care, at about $6,196 per month. It may seem surprising that assisted living can be more affordable than independent living, but this difference usually comes down to how each type of community structures its pricing. Independent living often uses an all-inclusive model that bundles most services and amenities into one monthly fee, while assisted living typically follows an à la carte model, allowing families to pay only for the care and support their loved ones need.

The following bar charts display costs based on starting base rent and may not include fees for care services, certain amenities, and any other extras.

How to pay for assisted living in Chicago

When it comes to paying for assisted living in Chicago, older adults and their families have several financial options to consider. Depending on eligibility, many families use a mix of personal savings and public assistance programs — such as Illinois’ Medicaid benefits — to help offset the cost of care and make assisted living more affordable.

Private pay options

Families often use a combination of personal income and assets to help pay assisted living expenses. Common sources include:

Some families share the responsibility of covering their loved one’s assisted living costs, ensuring access to quality care, comfort, and support.

VA benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides several benefit programs that can help eligible veterans and their surviving spouses pay for assisted living. Commonly used programs include:

  • Veterans Pension
  • Aid and Attendance benefits
  • Disability Compensation

Surviving spouses may also be eligible for Survivors Pension or Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), both of which can help reduce assisted living expenses.

Because the VA application process can be complex and time-consuming, even small mistakes or missing documents can cause delays or denials. To make the process easier, it’s best to work with a VA-accredited benefits counselor who can confirm eligibility and guide you through each step of the application.

Resources for veterans in Chicago

There are more than 60,000 veterans living in Chicago, many of whom are 65 or older.[03] To support them, and their families, several area organizations provide benefits guidance. They include:

  • Chicago VA Clinic
1141 S. California Ave. Community Resource & Referral Center (CRRC)
    Chicago, IL 60612
    Phone: 312-569-5750

Medicaid

Medicaid is a federal and state program that helps individuals and families who have limited incomes afford health care and long-term care services. While Illinois’s Medicaid program won’t cover room and board in an assisted living community, eligible residents can use payments to cover the cost of care services.

Illinois Medicaid supports eligible elderly residents through several programs, some of which are entitlements, meaning that any Illinois citizen who meets the program’s requirements is eligible. Others are waiver programs, so availability may be limited:[04,05,06,07]

Eligibility requirements vary, but generally include the need to:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or meet requirements for noncitizens
  • Be at least 60, or 65, years of age, blind, or disabled
  • Meet certain income, asset, and medical need guidelines

Medicaid resources in Chicago, Illinois

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for adults aged 65 and older, as well as for some younger individuals with qualifying disabilities or medical conditions.[08] While Medicare doesn’t cover the cost of assisted living or other long-term care services, it can still help reduce overall health care expenses. Residents in assisted living may use Medicare to pay for eligible medical needs — such as prescription medications, durable medical equipment, and approved treatments or therapies received while living in the community.

Transportation for seniors in Chicago

Chicago is known for its excellent public transportation options. In fact, many Chicago residents choose to use public transportation because of the city’s heavy traffic and limited parking. The Chicago Transit Authority “L” train is the most convenient and cost-effective way of getting around in the city.

While Chicago is relatively walkable, it’s quite big, so it’s worthwhile knowing what other options are available. Chicago’s bus system has more than 100 bus routes and offers free and reduced fares for seniors, as well as the Metra Rail train for commuting to the Chicago suburbs.

Chicago also features AC Med Tran, which is designed for seniors and individuals who require a wheelchair.

Beyond public transportation, Chicago is a very walkable city, according to Walk Score.[09] Based on factors such as public density, availability of walking and bike paths, and public transportation, this means most errands can be completed on foot.
