Caring staff
Staff is very caring. Both the director, [name removed] and resident care director, [name removed] are RNs who have specialized in dementia and memory care. The activity director spot had been vacant since we started there. She just started [date removed] and appears to be doing well

The good and the bad
At first, I found this facility to be great, people were friendly, the rooms were really nice, just a wonderful place. Unfortunately, my mom spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital and rehab, and I found out that while mom was not there in her room, things were stolen. Patients' rooms were kept locked when they weren't there and while I can't speak for others, I KNOW for a fact that one of the facility workers had gone in to "tidy" up her room before she came home from the hospital, but things came up missing. And I know this for a fact because my husband and I had stopped there a few days earlier to pick up some stuff of mom's and when we left, we knew exactly what was left sitting on her countertop. I immediately told the person in charge (who was actually the person who told me how this employee had gone into mom's room to clean it up) and I was told that an investigation would be conducted. But every time I would see this guy and ask him about it, I would hear the same thing. Now yeah, this guy was a wonderful guy, but he was the one who told me who went into mom's room! Unfortunately, my mom passed away last May but I was still upset over this employee going into mom's room (which had to be unlocked to enter). Eventually the guy in charge told me that I was given a refund amount added to the final refund check owed to me, but that didn't happen, I couldn't find it anywhere in the paperwork. So, yes, it's a nice place but please don't leave any valuables there, no matter how much mom wants otherwise.

Top Notch Facility
The facility could be updated but it is clean Staff is wonderful My mom worked in nursing home for 30 years and she comments how well my mother in law is taken care of I haven't tasted the food, but it always smell wonderful They have many activities planned but due to RSV and COVID it's often cancelled I looked at several places and for the money it was clearly the best. There were "nicer" places and service did not seem the same. We are very happy with Commonwealth. We like that is a small facility. Makes it more personal.

Commonwealth Review
The facility was very nice. The care staff were terrible. My mom was there 17 days and had 3 Skin tears and a jammed toe and no one took ownership for anything. My mother was terrified to even let them touch her. We moved her out immediately. I would never recommend Commonwealth Senior Living at Cockeysville to others.

what a wonderful place for mom, extremely happy!
Overall, I would rate it at 5. Cleanliness at 5. Friendliness at 5. Quality of care at 5. As far as food, I really can't say, I wasn't exposed to any of their meals, but considering how well everything else was, I have no doubt that their meals were good. My mom is a diabetic and they did have her on a diabetic diet. As for activities, I would rate it at 5, I know they have many activities to keep their patients "entertained", such as exercise classes, art classes, and bingo to name a few. Now as for the value, I would rate it at 4/5. Personally I thought it was kind of expensive but you know the old saying, "you get what you pay for" and this place was just fabulous. The place was one level and the rooms were quite spacious. Mom's room has hard wood floors and really nice (large) windows looking out to beautiful gardens and trees. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for an assisted living place for their family member. I should also say that there is a male nurse who runs the facility and he is truly wonderful, he really cares about his patients and goes out of his way to help in any way he can. I've even told him before that he's the best thing that ever happened to CommonWealth Assisted Living.

Do not recommend
The food was not good, the facility had difficult time keeping nurses. Always a different nurse. My moms medication wasn't alter in her last year. I was very upset with them because of this. She also got a bed sore that didn't heal. One tech was aggressive and they let her go. No I do not recommend this place.

Put your mind at ease
All the staff was very friendly and very attentive to my mom's needs and to our family. The housekeeping was excellent and my mom's Memory Care room was kept immaculate. The rest of the facility was kept immaculate, as well. My mom always had clean clothes on. If she spilled something on herself then they would change her clothes. If I had any questions at all I could contact the Director, who was also wonderful to communicate with and she was professional. The meals were quality, nutritious meal that my mom received. They even had parties with activities and our family always was invited. I would highly recommend this facility. My mom couldn't have received better care than at Commonwealth Cockeysville Memory Care unit. I am very grateful to all of them.

"Finding mom a New Home
5 stars! I absolutely love Commonwealth Senior Living, the people who work there are really great, and the nurse in charge, who happens to be a guy, [name removed] is just wonderful, he is so kind and helpful, and really seems to care about their patients, he is genuinely a fine man! The rooms are quite spacious, some with hardwood floors and some with carpeting, you can choose which one you would prefer to have for your mom (or your dad) to have. It's on the smaller side, with not too many people, plus it's all on one floor, no stairs. I chose a room with hardwood floors and it's really beautiful, a nice size room, which my mom really likes. I would definitely refer anyone to this place if they were looking for an assisted living place for their parents, I can only say good things about it.

My tour review
This community was in the running and this was my number two. There was another community that just followed up with me and showed that they cared about my loved one and it swayed me another direction. Very nice community and the pricing seemed to be a-la-cart. Location was also important for where my loved one was. The tour guide spent a lot of time with us and answered all of questions in regards to the community.

Depressing, staff was friendly enough but could not even get unoccupied rooms opened up with the keys they had. That is concerning. Kitchen where food is prepared was run down, dirty and unacceptable in my opinion. Staff member let me know they were changing over and would not be called Greenfield anymore. I did not inquire as to why but hopefully they will remodel kitchen and fix doors.

“Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see”
-Most “care managers” are paid minimum wage and have no more training to care for people than a fast food restaurant cashier. (There’s a reason they are called “care managers” instead of CNAs, and it’s because they are not certified.) -Understaffing is “hidden” by counting one person as two positions...if a care manager takes a weekend class to be a “medical technician”, then the claim can be made that there are is a “caregiver and a med tech” in the building, but it’s really one person doing two jobs, which means less care and attention for people. -Most people are doing two jobs; As of October 2018, the Designating Nurse is also the Health Care Coordinator, The Executive Director is also the Resident Care Coordinator, the Sales Director is also the Program Coordinator. There is no maintenance person and only one part-time housekeeper, so....with most people doing two jobs, does that mean most jobs are only half-done?

Learn From Our Mistakes!
Spend a day here, unannounced. Participate in the activities- if they actually happen- just because activities are listed on a calendar does NOT mean they actually take place. Eat a meal. Talk to the residents. Ask staff how long they have been there and if they are CNA certified. Then go do the same at other facilities. If your loved one is going to live here, you should at least spend one day walking in the shoes you intend to put them in. Don’t be fooled by untruths presented on a “tour”....and the $3000 “community fee” is negotiable- don’t pay it!

Ask Questions
Visit more than one time, at different times of day and evening, different days of the week. Talk to residents and their families. Ask for references. Ask how long each staff member has worked in their current position at this location. Within the past two years, there have been 4 different executive directors, 2 different nurses, 4 different cooks, 3 different maintenance people, 3 different housekeepers, and 4 different activities people. That doesn’t even include the caregivers, because there have been too many to count. This place can’t retain staff in any position-and then ought to tell you something.

A Place for Mom has scored Viva Senior Living at Cockeysville 8.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
