nice tour nice people, not what we are looking for
The people were very nice but the facility does not fit what we are looking for. My mother is used to a washer and dryer in her space, she does not want to have to use a shared laundry and she likes a bit more updated facility. The facility where she currently is in Nashville has a much larger square footage in her appartment, more ammenities, and for the cost, Signal mountain is much more expensive.

Friendly Staff. Building needs updating.
Attendants are friendly and capable, but the facility has a high rate of turnover, often resulting in long delays due to shortage of staff. I'm pretty sure the high turnover is a problem at other facilities as well, due to the demands of the job and the low hourly wages paid. This is an old building. It could do with an update in the décor and a good scrubbing. One elevator is often out of order. The food is very good, but the dining room is noisy and chaotic.

Need more staff
They don't have enough staff on the weekends to ensure proper care for residents. The apartment size is great and so is the location, but the air conditioning is out in the halls and has been for a few weeks. My mother in law fortunately still has AC in her apartment.

I moved here on [date removed]. The Administrative Staff has changed. There is a new Executive Director, Financial Director, Sales Director, Activities Director, Maintenance Director, several new Housekeepers, and several new dining room servers. There's always a big turnover of staff. We have lots of new residents. There are only two laundry rooms in the building. One on the 4th floor and another on the 5th floor. Each laundry room has two washers and two dryers. That's not enough for all the people who live here. I am in Independent Living, so I do my own laundry. It is hard to find a washer and dryer, so I get up at 4 o'clock in the morning. There is no charge for my laundry if I wash my own clothes. Otherwise, I would have to pay then I don't always get them back. Housekeepers will wash my sheets, wash cloths and towels for free, but I don't want them to do it. Too many people have things gone missing. I'd rather do it myself.

I would not recommend
At first, the staff and admin were very helpful and accommodating. But once I got my mom moved in and settled, they all quit responding to questions I had. There were not enough staff on the memory care floor, and it always smelled like urine. Other residents wandered in and out of my moms room and took things, and I understand that is something that happens in memory care, but if they had enough staff, I would think it would be preventable. Also, my mother was not supposed to eat breakfast before a doctor's appointment, and they knew so, but when the doctor asked if she had eaten, she said yes. I called to double-check, and she had had breakfast. The whole experience was very frustrating. I know it's a tough job, I understand it's not a very lucrative career unless you are the owner, but for the short 5 months my mom was there, I was shocked by how unprofessional and awful the company was.

Management's involvement in the daily activities. Hiring more RN's as opposed to LPN's. Important information has been overlooked in doctors orders upon the resident returning from a hospitalization.

Review of Signal Mountain Senior Living
The care attendants are excellent:skilled, respectful, cheerful. Executive staff is somewhat responsive. I only had to call four times to talk to a person in the business office about my monthly statement. Facility is in poor repair. Food is very good but the dining room is noisy, chaotic, and disordered. Facility is not well kept: unsightly, missing mailbox covers;inadequate laundry facilities; severely understaffed maintenance personnel. Activities consist of: an excursion at 10 a.m. or chair yoga; golf card game at 2 p.m; bingo; Netflix or Prime Video movie at 6:30; and, crafts in the community room at various times. Same thing practically every day.

I would recommend it!
We have one suggestion, and that is for new residents sit at a designated table at the beginning so the resident doesn't feel so ostracized and older residents can notice them and then meet each that way. They should teach men how to do laundry, it's a wonder the machines don't tear up more than they do! She loves the activities, library, beauty shop, and staff!! Oh yes, I would recommend it, I would live there happily. Again a great staff, and they have a piano any one can play. I enjoyed the non-denominational church too. Good food, especially the Meatloaf!!

Glad to have found this place
Friendly, caring staff & residents!! Mom’s new apt is big & beautiful! Her cat loves it too. Mom wasn’t moving anywhere without her fur baby. Love the cafe, no cafeteria lines there! It’s peaceful & quiet! After the hustle & bussle of raising a family & working, this is exactly where you want to go after retiring. There’s always activities throughout the day & movies every night. Mom has a lot of new friends, back to being a social butterfly and so happy!!

Great place to live!
I live in an Independent Living Apt. It has a big living room and bedroom with a large walk-in closet. The kitchen has a bar between the living room. The bathroom has a tub with a shower and safety grab bars. There is no stove but I have a large refrigerator and a microwave, toaster and a coffee maker. I plan to get a crockpot although I don't need it. The food is much better than [removed] and we don't have to pay for our lunches...three meals a day are included here.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Tennessee’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Tennessee’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Signal Mountain Senior Living 8.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
