Our Experience
The day to day staff at MorningStar of Hayward is great, the administrative staff is okay. They need to hire accountants that know accounting. As for the food, sometimes it is a 2 (cold food) and sometimes it is a 5 (outstanding steaks). The housekeeping is okay, they don't always clean well. Communication with the family is good. The move in process was okay. They need to clean up the basement and basement access. The 'extra help' charges are a disaster. Everything is points and levels. I have no idea what stuff costs. The first threshold is about $1,000 for just the simplest help.

A safe, secure and inviting Care facility. Memory Care checks all the boxes. For the price it’s still a great environment for residents and their families. The daily activities welcome family in most cases. In memory care all is inclusive in price. No extras like many facilities and we visited 8. Housekeeping, laundry, meals delivered, 24 hour care are all in monthly cost. All employees from maintenance to the sales people are excellent.
They are very patient especially with the demands of dementia folks.

MorningStar: The good and the bad
MorningStar of Hayward has been recently purchased and has been renovated. Many of the aspects (carpeting, walls, bathrooms, all fixtures) are fresh, new and very clean. On the Plus Side: The activities have been great. My parents have been getting involved with lots of different activities such as exercising, bingo, blackjack, etc. The food has been good for all of our visits, but my parents have said that a couple times they had to send food back. My dad gets his daily ice cream, so he is mostly happy. The laundry and housekeeping team is great. Two girls come by each week to change the sheets and take their laundry. The transportation has been working out well. They are getting rides to appointments when necessary. My sister grumbles at the work in trying to figure out issues (the bill, the Internet/WiFi) but she has so much freedom now and has had a great relief of the daily stress of taking care of my parents. The medical staff on the floors have been great. My parents are not fully "Assisted Living" but the medical staff has come by and provided assistance. They have been extremely helpful. On the Minus Side: The financial people there are rather hopeless. My sister has been working with them every month for the first few months to straighten out every bill. They have been doing things that are so wrong that a child could see their error. I think my sister finally talked to the top local administrator and figured out their errors. I think things have been better for the past month. They must be counting on a bunch of mindless people that will just write them checks every month without understanding what the costs are. The WIFI networking in the building has had issues for months now. The cable-TV is just straight broadcast cable, so I encouraged my sister to set them up with a streaming service that offers more programming. The down side is that the WIFI is so horrible that they have a hard time using the streaming service and it keeps disconnecting and causing other issues. They need to get some networking people in there to resolve the issues. As for Personnel, it's a little mixed. [name removed], the "salesperson" that convinced us to sign up, was nice and supportive when we were deciding but I think she only came by once or twice after my parents moved in. We had a MorningStar person come by the house before my parents moved in to "evaluate" my parents for the level of care they would need. My parents are on an "Assisted Living" floor but they don't really need any assistance at this time but they are on the right floor "to be ready" when they do need assistance and so that they do not need to move when they transition to actual "Assisted Living". The lady doing the evaluation at one point said "I don't even know what I am doing here if you don't need assistance". A rather *outrageous* comment for someone that is an ambassador of the company. Although the facility is being re-worked, there are still Security and Safety issues. Someone came in from outside and was roaming the building. This was very alarming. I am not sure how they fixed this but to say Security is lax is an understatement. My sister was able to pull into the underground parking (gated) only to find she could not get out of the parking area and into the building. Phones and instructions there did *not* work. She was starting to panic and soon her only recourse would have been to pull the fire alarm. Not a very good solution to the problem. Overall, I would recommend MorningStar. We have communicated to them that we will all be better off if we have more residents to drive down the costs and make them more profitable and help keep the price increases down. My parent's floor only has about 3-4 apartments occupied out of about 50-ish apartments on the floor. The other floors seem to have a lot of activity and a lot of occupied rooms. If I did recommend MorningStar, I would warn anyone that the accounting is horrible and that they would need to examine every bill, line by line to understand what the charges are. I would warn them to NOT set up any kind of automatic payment and to manually write checks or manually send payments after receiving any bills.

Resort-like and more square footage
Casa Sandoval has more square footage by a long shot over the other facilities, that was my main driver.
It's the ONLY place I could find in the Bay Area that could fit two twin medical beds in the same room. It's also very beautiful, comfortable, ambient and very resort-like.
We would definitely pick Casa Sandoval again, but be mindful that each floor has different levels of care with different providers. I say that because we ended up going to a floor that wasn't as conducive. Some floors offer independent living, while others have assisted living. I would tell future prospects to ask questions and see to it that level of care corresponds to what floor you choose for your loved one(s).

Happy with my choice
They are having a hard time finding someone to drive the van so they are going shopping for us, they are trying their best to find someone though. They will personally drive us to church on Sundays and are being really accommodating while they figure it out. The activities are wonderful and they have a lot to offer. I love that there is a lot of wildlife to look at, the setting is in the trees so it is peaceful. We are also very close to the Japanese tea garden, grocery stores, shopping etc. so the location is great. The apartment sizes are slightly bigger than some others that I looked at. I would absolutely recommend Casa Sandoval to others looking.

Excellent choice at a good price
This community is well managed, clean professional and friendly. The staff are very caring as well. They have activities like live music, crafts, work outs and more for the residents to do to keep busy in the community.

Very friendly staff gave me a virtual tour, showing me the outdoor areas, a model apartment, the common areas, and answering all my questions thoroughly. I was impressed with the courtyard, and the apartment. They are undergoing renovations for a couple of years and have discounts available because of that.

Mom Loves Her Independence, I Love the Assistance
The staff is very nice. They are flexible, understanding, and the location is pretty good. I would recommend you check the community out. Make sure you check the payment and monthly fee as well. They are currently doing renovations on the community.
There was an adjustment period due to COVID for my loved one. The community was helpful with getting the vaccines to the residents quickly.

A place doe mom to KEEP living
I feel like it is a place for my mom to live and enjoy life with supportive care. When I looked at other places, if felt likethe people were living there waiting to die, but here, everyone is living to live and that is so important to me. The staff are very caring and willing to do extra things for the resident, not just what is required of them to do. They really do show that they care. The building is a bit older but they are currently remodeling so we are excited about that.

Alll Great, Except 4 Food Quality
I love this place for my mom. In troubled times they are taking the neccessary steps to keep her and others safe. She is taken care of in every way. All staff have been helpful. The only thing I can complain about is the quality of the food. I wish it was not so cheap of quality cheap and was a more organic wholesome menu.

Casa Sandoval is a quality assisted living facility
It was a difficult process earlier this year to find an adequate assisted living facility for my mom when it was clear she could no longer live on her own in the home where she had been for 60 years. We looked into several possibilities and were fortunate to settle on Casa Sandoval in Hayward. There were some other facilities that would have worked for us as well but in the end Casa Sandoval best suited our needs and those of my mother. Fortunately for us it is relatively close to my residence which allows us more frequent interaction with her but the major positive is the outstanding staff at Casa Sandoval and the dedicated care they provide for my mom.. they have done a great job with whatever needs she may have . We are also happy with the overall cleanliness of not only her private apartment but with the entire overall facility. The dining hall provides her with very adequate choices and the staff there are again very helpful and provide all residents with very personable care and service. We would not hesitate to recommend Casa Sandoval to anyone who is in the process of finding quality care for family members or friends..This facility will most likely fill their needs and their fees are relatively reasonable to other options. We feel very fortunate that we chose to look towards Casa Sandoval as one of our options when we originally put our list together of facilities we wanted to evaluate. Thank you for the opportunity to express our appreciation for the work being done at Casa Sandoval in regards for the care being provided for my mother.
