Not exactly warm and friendly but care appears solid
The staff in general seem a bit distant. I wasn't able to establish a relationship. I did not witness a strong relationship of the staff to my family members residing there. There was one nurse who seemed proactive but she was disappointed with the lack of upward mobility and possibly wanting to look for new opportunities. The PT person seemed very proactive and genuinely engaged with residents and family. After some initial upheaval and doubts about the trustworthiness of the staff, my family residents seem to be happy there, but I have limited contact with them. I do wish I could find a way to get staff to assist me with communication. I have had limited visits to the facility so I provide this assessment with hesitation.

We picked this community, because of their reviews, cleanliness, residents seemed quite happy. As I have said before, my Dad was only there for 5 days before he passed so I do not have a long term impression of Charter.

Many improvements needed
There was a core group of about four staff members who were wonderful for Mom and loved her. They were very, very upset when she passed away in July. The director of the facility was absolutely no help with anything. And if they felt like the staff was getting too close to a family, they would either move them to another floor or fire them. I don't get it. Several of the best workers they had got let go because they targeted them until they ran them off. At one point the air conditioning went out and it was out for over 8 weeks this past summer when it was so hot. The director bought box fans for the offices but none of the residence rooms. The director bought portable air conditioners and put them in the offices. At one point I found mom sitting out in the Commons area Overheated And very sluggish. I don't know if they have the air conditioning fixed as of this point or not. In the winter last winter the heat went out for a while. So it was very frustrating. I finally went to the director and said I'm going to go out and get one of these fans from the building and put it in my mother's room. She said which one are you going to get? I said you tell me. After that is when a portable air conditioning unit showed up in my mother's room. I don't like the way they treat staff who are doing a good job. They brought in a lady who is a nurse over the staff and she spoke the staff and to the families of the residence in a very non-respectful way. We were to the point we were going to try to find Mama another place but she started transitioning with her dementia and we just decided to stay there. The only reason she got as good of care as she did there was because my sister and I were there everyday. We took turns and went on the opposite days. So the facility and staff knew we were going to be there.

Best Care For Mom!
For over a year my family and I searched for a program that would best suit our mom. I did virtual tours, made multiple phone calls, and narrowed my search down to 2 facilities. My family decided to go with Charlotte Senior Living for several reasons. When I first took the in person tour the atmosphere was warm and calming. The staff and clients smiled and said hello as we passed. It gave a feeling that my mom would be comfortable here.

Would recommend.
We have been very pleased with the caregivers, nursing staff, housekeepers, and all who attend my parents (advanced assisted living) every day. On-site therapy is wonderful also! I do wish there was a dedicated activity room for residents. Facility is convenient to hospital and Dr/ specialist offices. Facility wheelchair transportation is good, but only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's a challenge to schedule appointments only on those days. But so far it has worked.

In my opinion, the beautiful facility is under staffed and the staff on hand was not trained to care for my husband. He was left alone a lot so he was allowed to wander around and ended up in other patients rooms. My husband has Alzheimer's disease. They ended up sending him to the hospital without my consent, last straw for me. The ER doctor is the way I was notified because she didn't know why he was there. Bottom line, they're not equipped for people with dementia.

Great support and kindness, the best place possible
I am delighted with everything at the memory care unit at Charter. I was warmly welcomed by everyone I met and given great information before Dad moved in. I’ve been supported every step of the way which is particularly helpful as I don’t live in the USA so can’t visit regularly. The fact that Charter isn’t part of a faceless national chain makes it so much more personal, with staff being committed to great communication and openness. In contrast to previous placements, I genuinely don’t feel we are just there to generate income for the company. Friends who visit send glowing reports - Dad is treated with patience, kindness and courtesy and staff work hard to put his needs first, understand his personality and offer the best care I could wish for. His room is kept clean, his personal hygiene is attended to and staff work hard to help him feel safe and secure. They also accept and work around any difficulties that arise given his dementia and mobility issues.

I am sad that my husband passed away 3 weeks after admission but during that time he was in 3 different hospitals and was only at Charter for a total of 5 or 6 days. But that said, they took good care of him and me too. I was very impressed of the care the staff gave to their residents. I must tell you that A Place for Mom is the greatest "invention" ever. I was at a high level of stress and getting connected to Place for Mom was a lifesaver. I spread the word about them all the time. And I (and our kids) loved Charter.

Tread Carefully
Putting humans in a warehouse for old people is a tragic experience. Memory Care is the worst. Charter Senior Living is a for profit enterprise. Costs are cut to make a profit. This showed in some of the low quality caregivers they hired and some of the med techs they hired. The people who worked there were a mixed bag. Some were caring and attentive to my wife and some just ignored her or did not try to help her. When I tried to get answers to medical questions, it was extremely difficult. One of the med techs was as helpful as she was able. There is not a medical doctor affiliated with the place that I could see. The applications for payment to medicare for my wife's medical care were made by nurse practitioners or physicians assistants. Of course, even though they were being paid, they were not available to answer questions. As for the food, Memory Care did not receive the same quality of meals that the general population did. Some of the meals in MC were OK, a few were good, and most were deficient in protein and vegetables. Any time a dish was to have meat or chicken in it, you had to search carefully to find the little shreds of meat or chicken that were there. My wife loved the pink lemonade. Usually there was only enough for one serving. Pinching pennies just went too far.

Make sure the facility has enough help to care for your love ones. GO and check out the place when they don't know your coming My husband had to eat puree and hated it we ask to change it. It had to be done doctor. It took oolong to get things done. He also couldn't see and they feed him after 3 times they took food away. If he needed water he could not fine class. Very few activities. Not even a few in a wheelchair. That was wrong place for my husband he was only there for 24 days. I should have never put him there.

I definitely would not recommend this place to anybody. It's way too expensive for the care that they get. A lot of the staff was just sitting around on their phones. My father was very rarely brought to an activity. Some of the staff members were rude and unpleasant. The executive director takes your complaints very lightly. definitely not worth $[fee removed] a month.

Their call buttons for the residents at the beginning didn't work. So the only way to get help was if someone came and checked on my loved one. The facility was taken care of, except for their outdoor areas. The regular staff have been very friendly and are so helpful and provide great care. The meals are average. In December, policies are changing and there will be charge for residents to eat in their rooms. I think the overall cost is average.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know North Carolina’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
