How much does memory care cost in Charlotte, NC?

In Charlotte, the average monthly cost of memory care is $5,404, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This average is based on starting base rent and may not include fees for care services, certain amenities, and other extras. Actual costs can vary based on a community’s location, floor plan, your loved one’s care needs, and any add-on services.

At $5,404 per month, Charlotte’s average memory care cost is slightly higher than the North Carolina average of $5,318, but lower than the national average of $5,660.[01] According to the Economic Research Institute, Charlotte’s broader cost of living is 11% higher than the national average and 18% higher than in the average North Carolina city.[02] Knowing how Charlotte compares can give families a clearer starting point as they look for safe, reliable care that fits their loved one’s needs and budget.

Memory care in Charlotte usually costs more than other senior living options because it provides a higher level of support. For families, that higher cost often reflects the extra safety features, dementia-trained staff, structured routines, and supervision their loved one may need. Assisted living in Charlotte averages about $5,078 per month and provides help with daily tasks, while independent living averages about $3,580 per month and is designed for older adults who live mostly on their own.[01]

How to pay for memory care in Charlotte

Most families use more than one source of funds to pay for memory care. In Charlotte, common options include private savings, income, long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and North Carolina Medicaid programs.

Private pay options

Families often use personal income, savings, and assets to cover monthly memory care costs. Common private pay sources include:

Since memory care is a long-term care expense, it can help to compare several payment options before choosing a community.

VA benefits

If your loved one is a veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers benefits that may help with memory care costs. These benefits usually don’t pay senior living rent directly, but eligible recipients may be able to use monthly payments toward care-related expenses.

Common VA benefits that may help include:

Because VA applications can involve detailed service, income, asset, and medical records, families may want to start early. A VA-accredited benefits counselor or veterans service officer can help explain eligibility, gather paperwork, and reduce the risk of delays or denials.

Resources for veterans in Charlotte

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps people with limited income and assets pay for health care and long-term care. In North Carolina, the state Medicaid program is called NC Medicaid.

NC Medicaid generally does not pay for memory care room and board. However, eligible residents may receive Medicaid-covered health and personal care services in certain licensed adult care homes or other residential setting if the community accepts Medicaid and the resident meets program rules. Families should confirm coverage with NC Medicaid, the community, and the local Department of Social Services before relying on Medicaid as a payment source.[04,05]

North Carolina also offers several programs that may help eligible seniors with long-term care costs, including:[06,07,08]

  • Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults (CAP/DA)
  • NC Medicaid for Aged, Blind, and Disabled residents
  • State/County Special Assistance, which may help eligible low-income residents pay for room and board in licensed adult care homes and other approved residential settings

Depending on the program and eligibility, coverage may include:

  • Support with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Personal care services
  • Physical, occupational, or speech therapy
  • Medical supplies and equipment
  • Care coordination and case management

Eligibility is based on income, assets, and documented medical need, and some programs may have enrollment limits or waiting lists.

Medicare may still help pay for approved medical services your loved one receives while living in memory care. This can include:

  • Hospital stays
  • Doctor visits
  • Prescription medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Other medically necessary care

Many Charlotte memory care communities have a residential feel, with landscaped grounds, porches, courtyards, gardens, and shared indoor spaces. This can help families find a setting that feels calm and familiar while still offering dementia-focused care.

Secure, dementia-focused community design

For many families, safety is one of the biggest concerns when choosing memory care. Charlotte memory care communities often include secure spaces and thoughtful layouts that help loved ones move through the day with less confusion. Among A Place for Mom’s partner memory care communities in Charlotte, nearly 87% have enclosed courtyards, offer outdoor walking paths, or are secured communities.[01]

These features can be especially reassuring if your loved one paces, wanders, or becomes restless. Enclosed outdoor areas may give residents a safer way to enjoy fresh air, while familiar common spaces and easier-to-follow layouts can help daily routines feel calmer and more predictable.

Daily support and visiting health care

Memory care communities in Charlotte are designed to help with the daily needs that can become harder to manage at home. This may include support with bathing, dressing, grooming, meals, mobility, medication management, and incontinence care. Activities that support memory and connection

Charlotte memory care communities use familiar routines and activities to help residents feel more settled throughout the day. Music, art, gentle movement, gardening, devotional activities, sensory programs, and supervised outings can give residents ways to connect without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Among A Place for Mom’s partner memory care communities in Charlotte, more than 93% have an activity director, offer live musical performances, or provide off-site activities. All provide on-site activities. Many also offer art classes, trivia games, birthday parties, holiday gatherings, and pet-focused programs.[01]

Dining, comfort, and daily routines

Unfamiliar with Charlotte? Highlights for seniors

Charlotte is North Carolina’s largest city, with about 943,000 residents, and adults 65 and older make up about 12% of the city’s population.[03] Families researching memory care will find major hospital systems, caregiver resources, senior transportation programs, parks, museums, and calm outing options throughout the city.

Top hospitals for seniors in Charlotte

Charlotte has several hospitals and health systems that can support older adults with memory changes, dementia-related conditions, stroke recovery, heart conditions, cancer care needs, mobility concerns, and other chronic health concerns.

The clinic supports diagnosis and treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease and dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and mild cognitive impairment.

Transportation for seniors in Charlotte

Getting to appointments can be one more worry for families, especially when a loved one should not travel alone. In Charlotte, many memory care communities help residents get where they need to go with support. Among A Place for Mom’s partner memory care communities in the city, more than 93% offer complimentary or at-cost transportation for residents.[01] Depending on the community, these rides may help with medical appointments, pharmacy trips, errands, and supervised outings.

Public transportation and paratransit can also help visiting family members, caregivers, and eligible older adults get around Charlotte. A loved one living with dementia should travel with a family member, caregiver, or community staff member who can help with the route, timing, and return trip.

Things to do in Charlotte for seniors and their families

Charlotte offers many places where families can spend meaningful time with a loved one in memory care. The best outings are usually familiar, flexible, and easy to shorten if your loved one becomes tired or overwhelmed.

When planning, consider quieter times of day, simple routes, and venues with nearby parking or drop-off areas and places to sit. It can also help to choose one main activity rather than trying to fit several stops into one visit.

Museums and nostalgic outings

Charlotte’s museums can be good options for shorter, structured visits, especially when exhibits connect to a loved one’s longtime interests.

  • The NASCAR Hall of Fame can be an enjoyable choice for lifelong racing fans. Families can focus on one or two exhibits rather than trying to see the full museum in one visit.
  • The Mint Museum gives families a calm art-focused outing with two Charlotte locations. A smaller visit focused on one gallery or exhibit may work better than trying to see the full museum in one day.
  • Discovery Place Science can be a good option when visiting with grandchildren, especially for families who would enjoy an indoor outing with animals, aquariums, IMAX films, and hands-on exhibits.
  • The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art offers a compact Uptown art museum experience near other cultural stops. Families may find it easier to navigate than larger museums, especially during quieter periods.

Gardens, parks, and fresh-air visits

Charlotte’s gardens and parks can give families a relaxed way to enjoy time together without a rigid schedule. Outdoor visits are often best in mild weather, with enough time for rest and an easy return to the car.

  • Freedom Park is one of Charlotte’s most familiar parks, with a lake, paths, open green space, and places to sit. It can work well for a slow walk, a picnic, or a short visit with family.
  • UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens offers garden collections and greenhouse spaces that can make a gentle, sensory-rich outing for plant lovers.
  • Wing Haven Garden and Bird Sanctuary offers a quieter garden setting in a residential neighborhood. The flowers, birds, trees, and seasonal changes can make it a peaceful place for a shorter visit.
  • McGill Rose Garden offers a smaller garden setting near the NoDa Arts District, with walking paths, roses, and quiet places to slow down. Families may find it especially helpful for a shorter outdoor visit during mild weather, but it’s best to check the garden’s schedule before going because it closes for private events like weddings.

Performing arts and sensory-friendly entertainment

Live performances can still be meaningful for people living with dementia, especially when the show, music, or venue feels familiar. Families may want to choose shorter performances, aisle seating, matinees, or relaxed events when available.

  • Blumenthal Arts offers theater, music, comedy, dance, and touring productions across several Charlotte venues. Families can look for accessible seating, relaxed performances, or shorter events that fit their loved one’s comfort level.
  • The Charlotte Ballet can be a meaningful choice for loved ones who enjoy music, movement, and familiar seasonal performances.
  • The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte offers family-friendly performances that may work well for multigenerational visits, especially when families choose sensory-friendly showtimes.

Low-key family outings

Some of Charlotte’s best family outings are simple, familiar, and easy to adjust in the moment. For a loved one in memory care, a short visit with a clear plan may feel more comfortable than a crowded event or full-day activity.

  • Little Sugar Creek Greenway offers highly accessible paved paths, public art, and places to pause along the route. Families may want to choose a shorter section, visit during quieter times, and plan around weather.
  • The Market at 7th Street can work well for a short indoor outing near Uptown. Families can stop for coffee, a snack, or lunch without committing to a long restaurant meal.
  • Truist Field, home of the minor league Charlotte Knights, can be a good fit for lifelong baseball fans. A daytime game, shorter visit, or less crowded matchup may be easier than a full evening or an MLB event.
