Simply the best
I have been touring communities for a family member that needs AL with minimum care. After visiting 6 communities, Beckett Meadows is number one. Not only is it a very clean inviting community, you are welcomed as soon as you walk through the doors. Staff and residents are greeting you. Activities are going and the residents are smiling and happy. We stayed for lunch and my oh my, one of the best meals ever. Not only did the food taste amazing, but the presentation was beautiful. I know my family will be calling Brookdale Beckett Meadows home very soon.

People are very friendly and caring. They are staffing up a bit which is helping. Any issues we have had is directly related to not having enough people power to handle the demand. Overall, the car has been good. It is clean. The food is good. The activities are plentiful.

Not recommended
Upon our arrival, the aide who was helping to transfer my mom from her wheelchair to recliner, grabbed her frail hands, and dropped her on the floor. He held her hand tightly and the skin just slid off, bleeding profusely. Fortunately, no breaks. That was just the beginning. Untrained staff, unresponsive. Mom sitting in urine soaked pants. Not changes every 2 hours, as promised. No corrections ever made by administration. Poor housekeeping. I visited 4-5 times a week. There was never a visit without a problem. After a couple months of trying to make this work, I still didn't feel that administration even knew who she was. I would highly recommend looking for another facility.

Mismanagement of meds caused me to move my mom
I wrote a very positive review of this facility last June. I am here today to renounce that review, because the management changes that occurred in the interim have resulted in my loved one being moved to another (non-Brookdale) facility out of necessity. Supplements ordered by urologist given less than 20% of the time over 6 months; Rx from cardiologist suspended without notification to me (MPOA) or to the prescribing physician or our Primary Care Dr; no notification of a Covid + test in Dec. (We found out when my husband & I went out to visit just before Christmas, 3 days after the test was administered.) And finally, an ER visit with UTI, AFib, and under Covid protocol, with subsequent hospital admission, followed by 20-day skilled nursing stay. Kind caregivers could not make up for incompetent management, allowing a nurse practitioner to make unilateral medical care decisions, and insufficient communication with family or physicians.

Tour experience
We toured with Brookdale Beckett Meadows and it was also a very nice facility. I found that they did not have as many activities as another Brookdale we looked at and it was just overall quieter. The staff here were great but not as proactive with their follow up during the whole process. It was a great place but just not the right fit for my loved one.

A caring community
Our Loved One has lived at Beckett Meadows for 10 months. Initially, there was a period of adjustment, as we expected, and she required PT, OT & SP therapies, all of which she was able to receive on site. We have received excellent support from the Sales Manager, who was our initial contact with the community. There were management changes during this period, which were needed., but the consistency of day-to-day care for residents was admirable. Our Loved One now tells us regularly how friendly everyone is, how nice & kind the caregivers are to her, and how she thinks this is the best place for her to be. Having freedom to travel and address business responsibilities, while knowing that her needs will be met and that she is content, means everything to us. When there are any concerns, we know who to contact to achieve resolution. We have found that this is a place where we can be a part of our Loved One's caregiving team, focused on creating the best environment and care for her.

A first-rate assisted-living
Just wanted to remark what an excellent staff you have in the Clare Bridge (memory care) unit. Each time I visit I notice one or more of them going out of their way to help and comfort the residents, most of whom need lots of assistance. No one is ever just sitting in a corner ignored. The staff are patient, friendly, kind, and helpful whenever I have a concern. It's a hard job and very stressful, especially these days. So thanks. You are appreciated.

After contacting A Place for Mom, [name removed] was my first point of contact into exploring senior living communities. I’m so grateful that he was as after speaking with him, I felt a much needed sense of hope. [name removed] provided exceptional service and support. He was available, responsive and truly caring. Our family was impressed with the team approach at Brookdale Beckett Meadows and that the Executive Director personally reached out to us for reassurance and to make sure our needs were met.

A friendly and caring facility
Overall, it was very clean and the food was very good. They had some staff that were amazing and they knew my dad personally especially the receptionist, but others not so much. One thing my dad wasn't happy about was he would have wait for the escorts to and from meals. I had trouble with the medication management . They ordered medication that the doctor discontinued and charged us $400 for it. I didn't feel that they were on top on that. They had a care conference to discuss how to support engaging my dad in interaction with others including moving his apartment closer to the lobby.

WHY take the risk?
Now, it just takes one absurd screw-up to threaten the life of your loved one. Common complaints of bad care due to "understaffing" (how about training?) abounded before the pandemic, so what about NOW?? Example: It only takes forgetting to sanitize a phone, or door knob, or sink knob one time. Can all residents be constantly reminded to not give dinner rolls to each other by hand? Who is coughing on the candy dish in the lobby? Just dining next to someone can be a dangerous thing. So much to do and so few employees has been the past mantra, so just imagine now!! Before the quarantine my mother told me three times that she is captive. In this dangerous time, why not become more conscientious and take care of your own, rather than outsource it to unknown others who seem to be too busy even at the best of times?? It would also lighten the load for staff who are over-worked and thus, more careless - especially the Memory "Assistance" staff. What good is personal financial success if you do not value the person who cared for you not so long ago? Note: As of today, 75 people connected to San Antonio, Texas long-term care facility infected. As long-term care facilities become a growing concern during suffer coronavirus outbreaks, 67 patients and eight staff members at one San Antonio center have been infected.

Incommunicado
If communicating with a loved one who resides in Brookdale Beckett Meadows Assisted Living is even remotely important to you - don't expect to ever hear from him, or her more than once a week, or less if you do not provide him or her with a personal phone, or pager. Otherwise, this place is a veritable black hole for communication. An unfounded excuse, by a family member, prevents my mom from having a personal phone, or even a DIAL-LESS phone. That certainly assures a disaster, because after calling the main # and getting transferred to Assisted Living - Memory Assistance, the phone rings more than twenty times, or more before it's answered. Then, the individual must be fetched. The last time, the phone rang 40+ times and I had to hang up. This happened dozens of times and long "before" any talk of COVID-19 or a quarantine. Relatives & friends of hers also had the same problem, but they are too p.c. to complain. If it were 1920 I'd understand, but it is 2020. You'd think a DIAL-LESS phone would be provided to ALL residents IF Memory Assistance "experts" (ha-ha) at Brookdale actually thought communication was vital to "assisting ones memory"?? This raises deep concerns re: how capable or incapable they might be managing a major health crisis in a responsible manner. Complaining to the head office out of state - did not accomplish anything. At least put DIAL-LESS phones in various, general areas.

SAD CHAPTER FOR MY DEAR MOTHER
I am VERY disappointed in Brookdale Beckett Meadows. I have not visited the place and perhaps that is why the management believes they can make any claims without evidence. I am overseas and was not part of the this bad decision process. What kind of (quote-unquote) Memory Assistance Service requires making a caller wait, wait and wait, every damn time he, or she attempts to call a loved one? I have tried to reach my mother on the phone on many occasions, but have only gotten through one time. Every other time, the phone has just rang and rang, but no one answered. Yes, I called at a normal time. I called at 10:30 am CST and mid-afternoon. Considering the money they rack in this is just crazy !! Can they not transfer the call to India and have someone there answer? I am not exaggerating. The phone rings at least twenty times each time my call is transferred to Memory Assistance. The term Memory Assistance must suggest that the staff has memory problems regarding phone usage. Brookdale Beckett Meadow's management (according to my brother) informed him that supplying my mother with a phone - might be a bad idea, as she might make "wild-calls". No doubt, if I were a resident there - I would be inclined to make a "wild-call" also. I'd be screaming, "Get me outta this damn place now!" Is this 1920, or 2020? Considering the high cost that my brother chose to fork over to Brookdale Beckett Meadows. (in a bid to make HIS life easier - not my mother's) - one would think convenient communication would be a priority. Wrong !! Do you let the phone ring 20 times or more when you call a friend, or family member, let alone the fire department, EMS, or Police??? The low priority which communication is given, to the residents of Brookdale Beckett Meadow's -- makes the "service" highly suspect. The place and its management - if not the entire nationwide "for-profit" business. While my mother was residing at Brookdale West Lake - only four months ago, she sounded sufficiently clear-minded when I would talk with her, every 1-2 days. Nevertheless, my brother (independently) chose to put her in Assisted Living at Brookdale Beckett Meadows. Since that time, I have been able to get through to her only one time. I have called at least 10 times. The last time I called - I was so irritated by the time it took for someone to answer the phone - that I imparted a little diatribe to the woman who answered. She got very defensive and talked over everything I said. I emailed the Wellness Director regarding my concerns about my mother getting: 1. A healthy diet - not hidden sugars and starches (every meal consisting of white flour this or that). Since I am overseas, I also expressed concern about her personal environment and living quarters. The Wellness Director emailed me back and stated he would send photos the next day. It has now been three weeks. No photos and no email to apologise or explain why. I wrote a long email to the director expressing how horrible it is for a Memory Assistance "service" to deprive residents of crucial information. They told my brother it was to prevent "wild-calls" to EMS. My mother NEVER made a wild call to EMS. She never pushed the button on her emergency assistance necklace either. That would be easy to do. They make up crazy stories to keep "control" Memory Assistance residents. This is highly unethical. A denial of residents' human rights. Fact: My mother was cognizant enough to engage me in conversation and talk rationally only a few months ago, but I am now suppose to believe that she is no longer capable of using a telephone? This situation highly suggests that my mother is deprived of her constitutional right to communicate freely AND privately - WHEN she wants to and "without" another person next to her (who would serve to intimidate her from stating what she might want to state otherwise). * Sending photos of a loved ones' room is extremely difficult for BBM; * AND getting a loved one on the phone at Memory Assistance is also; Whether one is a mile away - or five thousand miles away - communication with a loved one must be guaranteed to be quick and easy. My brother (the culprit who put her there) told me that - BBM suggested my mother not have a phone as she might make wild calls. She was talking rationally with me three months ago, but they conveniently label her to serve their own dangerously selfish interests. BBM's lack of straight forwardness (photos that were never sent after three weeks, and long distance phone calls that never get an answer when transferred to Memory Assistance -- would cause alarms to go off- if someone truly cared. However, BBM is evidently a poorly disguised dumping ground for unwanted family members. Watch for a not so very subtle "nod and wink" if you should be so heartless as to seek it. Great cultures are built on the concept of taking care of ones own parents - the way they took care of you when you required it -- NOT discarding them into the care of time-card punching strangers who: (1). Are not fully transparent and... (2). Show little level of accountability. If Memory Care (Assistance) was true to its name - residents would be allowed - encouraged to communicate freely -- anytime they wished to. Not doing so, isolating them - creates depression, anxiety, and denies them the level of communication with significant others that is highly essential to proper mental health (and on more technical terms neuro-plasticity). Do research the role of depression and anxiety on dementia. Any civil rights lawyers paying attention to this???

Great Care!
I am overwhelmed with care, in a positive way. I came here for care which I couldn't get in my home. The building is structured in a way that it gives the residents safety. The response time from the staff is very quick. There were occasions I had medical emergencies and the staff is skilled enough to know what do to. The food is extremely good and tasty with plenty of options to choose from. The service is very good! The maintenance and the housekeeping is excellent as well. If there is ever an issue in my apartment, they are fast to fix the problem. For a senior who needs care, I found this community to be an excellent choice.

I toured the Beckett Meadows location not too long ago and was impressed with the atmosphere within the residence. The residents appeared happy and were actively engaged (I.e. with peers, staff, family, games, etc.). I had an opportunity to meet the dietary manager, who was very proud of her dish- especially the desert. This was supported by the few residents who were still eating or returning for seconds. The community was clean and felt very home-like. [Name removed] and his friendly team seem to be doing stand up job in providing a positive culture for the residents, families, and one another.

Thanks to all at Brookdale Beckett Meadows!
I have nothing but good things to say about Brookdale Beckett Meadows! My mom moved in this last November and always says how happy she is and how good the staff is to her. Executive Director, [name removed], is friendly and has always been available for any help needed. The staff works well together and has gone out of their way on several occasions to accommodate my mom. Residents are also very welcoming and helpful to the new person coming in - my mom has made many friends. Lots of activities, beautiful garden area and good food are also a plus. Thanks to all at Brookdale staff and residents for making this a place that my mom feels is her home.

What a JOKE
Worst place ever! My mother has been here for almost 4 years, we had some initial moving pains but the Director & Health & Wellness Director helped to smooth out the issues. However, since the new Direct [name removed] & the Health & Wellness Director [name removed] have taken over it's been a complete nightmare. [name removed] could care less about the residents and [name removed] only cares about how much more they can charge for care they do not deliver on. I recently put a camera in my mothers room and it's chilling the lack of care she has been given despite what we pay for. We have given the 30 days notice and are moving her to a facility that is more caring about the residents and not the $$. There are some staff members here that are very caring unfortunately they are underpaid and underappreciated. The staff members that do the least amount of work are held in the highest regard and defended by the management despite what they do or do not do. This place is a joke, if you love your family members do NOT consider this place.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Texas regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Texas regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Beckett Meadows 6.3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
