In Austin, the average cost of independent living is $3,655 per month, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This figure represents the typical starting price for local communities. Actual costs can vary based on several factors, including the size and layout of the apartment, the range of amenities and services offered, and the community’s location within the greater Austin area.

The average monthly cost of independent living in Austin is more expensive than the national average of $3,520 and the Texas state average of $3,090.[01] Austin’s overall cost of living is about 13% higher than the national average, according to the Economic Research Institute,[02] which can make independent living a bit more expensive but also reflects the city’s vibrant lifestyle, high-quality amenities, and desirable location.

How to pay for independent living in Austin

Because independent living is centered on lifestyle, convenience, and community and not medical care, most residents pay for it out of pocket. Insurance and government benefit programs usually don’t cover independent living costs since these communities don’t include personal or health care services as part of their offerings.

Private pay options

Personal income and assets that families often use to pay for independent living include:

VA benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides several benefit programs that can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses cover living expenses. These benefits can reduce financial stress and make it easier to enjoy a comfortable, maintenance-free lifestyle in the independent living community that fits your needs.

Common VA programs that may help include:

To get the most from your benefits, gather your paperwork early and connect with a VA-accredited benefits counselor. They can guide you through the application process and help you access the support you’ve earned.

Resources for veterans in Austin

Austin is home to almost 31,000 veterans.[03] The following organizations and agencies provide guidance, resources, and assistance in accessing available benefits and programs.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint program of federal and state governments. It won’t pay for room and board at an independent living community, but if you’re eligible and need care while you’re a resident, it can be used to cover medically necessary home care services.

Texas Medicaid supports these services through its STAR+PLUS and STAR+PLUS Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver programs.[04,05] Waiver programs aren’t an entitlement, so residents may be put on a waiting list. These waivers can be used to pay for care services that are provided to residents of memory care communities, but not for room and board.

Services typically covered include:

  • Help with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapies
  • Skilled nursing care
  • Recreational programs
  • Transportation
  • Daily meals
  • Housekeeping, laundry, and meal preparation

Eligibility is based on both medical and financial criteria. If you’re exploring Medicaid, take time to review programs and requirements to ensure the option you choose will meet your needs.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for adults age 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with certain disabilities or medical conditions.[06]

Because Medicare is designed to cover medical care, it doesn’t pay for independent living costs. However, if you need health-related services while living in an independent living community, Medicare may help cover medically necessary expenses such as prescriptions, doctor visits, or durable medical equipment prescribed by your physician.

Transportation for seniors in Austin

Austin’s vast urban sprawl makes it difficult for residents to easily walk everywhere, so many residents own a vehicle to drive themselves around. However, the city’s downtown area, the West Campus area, the University of Texas-Austin, and North University are considered the area’s most walkable neighborhoods. To seniors’ advantage, 100% of A Place for Mom’s independent living community partners offer complimentary transportation services.[01]

Seniors can also use CapMetro, the citywide public transportation system, which offers buses, rail lines, shuttles, and more. CapMetro offers a $3 Reduced Fare ID (RFID) Card for seniors 65+, Medicare card holders, and individuals with disabilities, which offers half-priced fares for all transportation services. The card must be renewed every two years.

The city’s parks and recreation department operates a Senior Transportation Program to offer rides to seniors 60+ in the Austin area. This transportation service is funded by the City of Austin and Capital Area of Council of Governments (CAPCOG) to enhance the quality of life for seniors and to promote independence among the population. Seniors must apply for the service. After approval, seniors can receive free rides for medical appointments and select routes. To reserve a ride for errands, riders must pay a $3 fee per destination.
