Overall Atria is by far the only facility we toured that is bright, clean, spacious and well staffed. The community areas are clean and the cleaning staff for the rooms are good. The long term staff are especially caring and friendly. I not need extra services, but when I have needed some assistance they have been helpful. They provide transportation to critical appointments. There has been significant turnover in staff, and the quality fluctuates a bit but they try hard to serve the large groups. It is a very nice dining room. The in house activities are good. The outside activities/field trips are fewer than expected but they work on getting suggestions. There are committees you can join. The monthly fee is high compared to other places, but there were good incentives in the first year which helped.

Senior living for parents- highly recommended. Safe , spacious living accommodations, daily activities, friendly........
Everything was great at Atria. Unfortunately my father had two strokes within 2 months staying there and need more personal care than what Atria could offer and my Mother wanted to be closer to my father at the Facility we moved him to. My brother and sister really liked that our parents stayed at Atria for four months but my Mom thought it was too expensive which the children didn't think the price was unreasonable everything provided. Senior living for parents- highly recommended. Safe , spacious living accommodations, daily activities, friendly staff and excellent meals- four to five stars.

Atria at Foster Square review
Those are the ratings for independent living care area, and not for the memory care unit. The meals and dining service took a dip in the past six months, but improving recently. We think this was due to staffing issues. Based on our experience, we would recommend the Atria at Foster Square community to others.

Atria Foster Square’s memory care unit
Everyone I have met here has been top notch, professional, knowledgeable, friendly and easy to deal with. I was concerned that my sister would have a difficult time adjusting to assisted living with memory care, and was thrilled that she took to it pretty quickly at Atria. The family is very happy that she is at Atria and is happy and thriving.

nightmare, avoid this facility
[name removed] made a $[removed] deposit and signed a contract. Two weeks after her scheduled move in date, she decided she wasn't going to move. Atria determined that date as our required 30 day notice and kept the $[removed] and charged an additional $[removed]. [name removed] never spent a night, ate a meal or participated in any activities. Appeals for partial refunds were rejected. Late payment notices piled up and we paid the $[removed]. Overall a nightmare of irrationality and impersonal consideration. An expensive lesson. In my opinion, a facility to be avoided

The look, style, and feel is nothing like other senior/assisted living facilities. It feels more like a hotel or condo complex. Beware of Atria Foster Square
BEWARE of Atria Foster Square! Atria Foster Square presents itself as a full-service sanctuary for elderly folks like my 97 year old mother. The lovely introductory tour also included an aggressive admonition to “lock down one of these high-demand rooms right away” with a $[removed](first month’s rent) “refundable deposit.” In good faith, we wrote the check, assured that if mom decided not to proceed, her deposit would be refunded. Mom began to waffle and grow hesitant about leaving her San Mateo home of 70 years, but Atria management assured us that the move-in date was flexible and that she could take her time in deciding. A couple of weeks later, she decided to stay home. I immediately contacted the Atria staff to apprise them of her decision and request the return of our refundable deposit. Instead of a check, we received an invoice for a second month’s rent. When the director finally returned our calls, we were informed that the voluminous rental agreement included a 30 day notice to

Excellent service, residents feel safe in a nice environment, staff and residents are friendly and food tastes like a four star restaurant - not found in most senior facilities. Review for Atria at Foster Square
When we visited it looked wonderful and the person we talked to her mother had dementia and thought it would be good. So in the beginning it was good. When my loved one got Covid from being there they basically kicked her out. They made us pick her up since they couldn't care for her. And then trying to see how she could return they didn't return calls. So they are very inadequate for care of memory care patients. Might be fine for assisted living. I just would never recommend it for memory care.

Atria at Foster Square so far
Our experience at Atria at Foster Square so far hasn't been great and needs to get better. The quality of care needs to get better, as I'm not sure what they are giving. As far as the staff, everyone besides executive staff are great. The Value for Cost remains to be seen, it's a 4 (good) for now. I'm hoping this facility does better.

One of the best facilities in the San Mateo area
The place is more cheerful and active than the other facilities that we visited. All the amenities are on the same floor for easy access. The dining room is less formal. It also has Asian cuisines. The staff and the residents are also younger than other facilities. The fact that 40% of the residents are Asians is a solid plus for Asian seniors who are less comfortable speaking English. The rooms are nice. The only negative is that the rooms don't have full kitchens.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the California regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about California regulations for Assisted Living.
