How to pay for independent living in Buffalo

Because independent living focuses on convenience and community rather than medical care, most residents pay for their housing and amenities out of pocket. Insurance and government benefit programs typically don’t cover independent living costs, since these communities don’t provide personal or health care services.

Private pay options

Personal income and assets that families often use to pay for independent living include:

VA benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers several programs that can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for living expenses. These benefits can ease financial stress and make it easier to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in the independent living community that’s right for you.

Common VA programs that may help include:

To get the most from your benefits, gather your paperwork early and connect with a VA-accredited benefits counselor. They can guide you through the application process and help you access the support you’ve earned.

Resources for veterans in Buffalo

More than 10,000 veterans call Buffalo home.[03] To support them and their families, several area organizations provide help and guidance. They include:

  • WNY Heroes, Inc.
    1001 E. Delavan, Suite 9
    Buffalo, NY 14215
    Phone: 716-630-5020
    Email: heroes@wnyheroes.org

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that helps people with limited income access health and long-term care services. New York’s Medicaid program offers several programs that can be used to offset the cost of services that you may need in independent living, though no program will cover the cost of room and board.[04]

The following programs are entitlements, meaning that all seniors who meet eligibility requirements will receive services:{{citations:5,6,7,8}}

  • Disabled, Aged 65+ or Blind (DAB) Medicaid, also known as NON-MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) Medicaid
  • Personal Care Services (PCS) Program
  • New York Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC) Program Waiver
  • Community First Choice Option

Services typically covered by New York’s regular state Medicaid plan and its various programs include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision care
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital care
  • Help with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapies
  • Recreational programs
  • Transportation
  • Daily meals
  • Housekeeping, laundry, and meal preparation

Medicaid eligibility is based on both medical and financial criteria. Families exploring Medicaid should take time to review all available programs and requirements to ensure the option they choose aligns with their loved one’s specific needs and level of care.
