A perfect place for my Brother
I have researched many Assisted Living facilities, first for my dad, who has since passed. The search was on for my brother, who needed more care than we could provide. The kindness and caring of the staff at Cardinal Kentwood is by far superior and heartwarming than any other Assisted Living care we have seen. They treat everyone like their own family! They really care!

A work in progress
Huge transition right now - they are having a hard time keeping staff they are working on hiring new executive directors, medial office staff, maintenance and house keeping. Communication is not the best right now because they are spread so thin. The day to day staff members we encounter who are there and who are loved ones encounter could not be nicer, they are so sweet and friendly.

Friendly Staff
I was really impressed how they kept covid out for so long besides one case. They followed all of the protocols and kept the people safe like they needed to. They tested everyone and stayed on top of all of it. The one thing that I do think they need to improve is the cleanliness with the bathrooms and making sure that they are well taken care of due to the residents abilities.

All that glitters in golden years is not gold
We moved my loved one in a few months ago and the day we moved him in we had lunch and the lunch was fabulous. Within 2 days of him being here the chef was not here anymore and the food quickly went downhill. He was getting cold meals delivered to him with no condiments. One of the reason we moved him in was because he needed assistance with personal hygiene. We asked for 2 showers a week and for the first 2 weeks they did not even come by. In 2 months he only had 4 showers total. All of the things that they promised in the beginning have not been carried through with. It is a poorly run facility and it has not been a good experience for us.

Good people trying to keep people like my parents comfortable & safe, which is very challenging right now.
We moved both my parents into Azpira. With their health declining, I needed to get them in quickly, so I didn't have the time to look around as much as I wanted to. But I took a chance with Azpira. I liked the feel when I walked in. It was clean and bright. But their number one challenge, and I'm sure it's a national challenge, is understaffing. The first night my parents were there, my father had a medical emergency in the middle of the night, and my mother went to look for staff and couldn't find anybody. So I had to go over there in the middle of the night and found the two staff members asleep. My mother was traumatized by that circumstance, and I was very unhappy as well. But, after that terrible first night, the people who run the place went out of their way to take care of my parents for the remainder of their stay there. The director was really honest and fair with me about the realities of trying to keep this place open with the staffing limitations she's been dealing with. And I appreciated the honesty. One of the things I think people want from assisted living is just an honest assessment of competence of staff, number of people on staff, things like that, despite what the shiny brochures say. And a lot of these facilities are just chronically understaffed, which is a shame for the families. After that night, which was about as bad as things can get, I don't think they tried to treat my mother any differently than anyone else in their care, but they were really aware that that's not how you want things like this to start, and that's not what they want for their residents or families. I was very pleased with the level of honesty I got from the director and the people who had to make the decisions for my parents. Another challenge with understaffing was keeping the dining room open. They were doing delivery to the residents individually, which affects the quality of the food. And nobody can fix that. My mother would complain it was bland and cold, but that's because it's being served in a big facility on trays and crates with a limited number of staff. They finally were able to open up the dining hall, which they had been trying to do for a while. Another challenge was with the night nursing staff. They just can't find people to work overnight who are qualified nurses at competitive wages.

Everything is not as it appears - I was very disappointed
What they say you're going to get at the beginning is totally different than what you do get once you move in. My loved one is not mobile, and they were supposed to put her into bed every night. One night they left her up all night, and she then ended up going to the ER because her blood pressure dropped so much, and she became unconscious. The phone is usually right by her, so she called me three times to tell me that they still hadn't put her to bed. So I called and I called and I called, and kept going to voicemail. Finally someone answered and said she would put her to bed right now. Instead of transferring my loved one to the bed, she left her in her wheelchair and laid a pillow on the bed for her to lay her head on, and she moved the phone so my loved one couldn't call me. The paramedics came and got her, took her to the hospital, and they found open skin, like a diaper rash. So Azpira Place was not changing her on the routine they said they were and that they were supposed to be. From the hospital, she went to a rehab center, and now she's home with me with home health care. Because of our experience at Azpira Place, I'm having a hard time trusting putting her anywhere else. Their lack of concern from the director and VP was disappointing. They promised they would call me and they still never have. My initial impression of the facility was that it looked fine. I could smell urine when I would come in sometimes, but things looked clean enough. Certain staff were awesome and would call me on a regular basis. But when the incident happened, it all shifted. And now no one will speak to me, and nobody has called me back.

Our experience in a community during Covid
A lot has been difficult due to Covid. I would think it would be a very pleasant, positive experience with Covid restrictions being opened up. I just don't know how long that process will take. They only just last week opened up to any visitors. They have you put on protective garb and limit visits to 30 minutes. That protocol can be intimidating when you come to visit. From what I've seen after my recent visit, I was very impressed. All the areas I saw were very clean, from the front door to my loved one's room. The building itself was nice. They have been pretty tight with Covid restrictions. Because they were sticking to the rules and regulations, they didn't have cases where people got sick. So those rules kept them safe, but they also kept the residents isolated. Friendship and fellowship I know is part of what's missing, but that would be the case anywhere you go. I've had limited interactions with the staff, but the phone conversations I've had with them have been fine. Because of Covid, I would say the care has suffered a little. They come and go and do what needs to be done, but they don't linger, which would be helpful sometimes. The staff have been very friendly and helpful, but I believe they are short staffed due to Covid. Initially our family was very pleased with the food, but there's been a change in their nutritionist. Our loved one has some difficulty chewing, and they've been working very hard to help find her food that she can chew and eat. Meals are still being delivered to the residents' rooms at this time. They have had some limited activities going on. We've had a PT and OT come in with outside services, and that has seemed to work well and benefit her well. We found that very helpful to supplement the care she's receiving at Azpira Place. She had a unique experience entering the community being in a wheelchair for the first time, which is a huge adjustment. And I think there were many people there who all came together and did their part to help meet her needs and help with that transition.

Azpira Place is a great place for your loved one to have the highest possible quality of life & have their needs met
We've been really, really happy here. Every single staff member we've run into has been very caring and compassionate. And they've been very patient with my loved one. I've seen that extended to other residents there as well. And that's been huge for us. They've also been really great at communication with my sisters and I about anything that comes up. They are constantly cleaning and disinfecting everting. They use the most stringent protection protocols. Everything looks new and well cared for, and you don't see stains or anything like that. Some of the activities they talked about doing, they've not been doing. But that's definitely due to Covid.

It's okay
one-hour visits in a special room, so I can't go in his room. Common spaces I've seen have been clean. Lady at front desk is very friendly and very helpful . A couple of the people that work there give some pushback when it comes time to be buzzed in and buzzed out. They couldn't find his shoes the last time we had to take him to an appointment. I haven't noticed that he smells when I pick him up for appointments. But when they dress him for appointments they just put him in pajama sweats when he does have nice clothes sets there. I always let them know days before, and then the day before, that he has an appointment. And then they say they didn't know I was coming when I arrive to pick him up. From what I hear form other people, it's like that in every place. I've talked to the nurse a couple of times, and one of the caregivers, and the only time they contact me is if there's an issue, like a fall, etc. I haven't had any updates on medications or anything else. I take him out for pedicures after a fungus issue that occurred at the last place we were there. There is a podiatrist that would come in, but they charge $65 just to cut his toe nails. Although I guess that's standard for all facilities. They've also not been willing to assist with nose and ear hair trimming. They did ask if he had a razor, but the other place wouldn't let him have one. I don't know if they're reminding him to brush his teeth. He has to have step-by-step instructions and prompting. You can tell more about that kind of stuff when you're able to go into the room to visit. This memory care unit is a lot smaller, about 15 residents. So I thought he would get better care. It's better than what it was at the other place, but still not what I would expect.

Amazing experience
My mother has been a resident of Azpira Place of Breton for the past 2 years and recently transitioned to their Memory Support. We have been truly blessed with amazing staff who have shown compassion towards my mom since day one. Even during this difficult journey with dementia my mother has been able to maintain her dignity and still always has a smile on her face. When we toured the memory support a few weeks ago we were very impressed with the program and how content the residents were. We look forward to visiting mom this week. Thank you to everyone who has helped us on our journey.

Pretty sit but Not good to live there.
The staff is nice if you can get them to do something with a resident. Most of the time, they are sitting around just having a good time with each other and not with the residents. The residents are who alone are left alone and staff ignores them. The food is awful. Chicken is generally undercooked. The hot food is seldom hot and mostly flavorless. The pancakes are usually cold and hard like they were left on the grill to long. Even after the new owners took over. Everything is not only the same, but worse, because then, the old staff, who at least knew the residents no longer worked there. No one knows what anyone else is doing, nor do they know what they should do.

Good place. Awful food.
Staff is great! Rooms are really nice. The entire facility is kept very Clean and beautiful. They keep it nice looking. Comfortable feeling here. Food is awful. Generally served cold. Generally tastes terrible and the chef does not care. Many people have spoken to him, he says it is what it is. Although there was a meeting with residents, it has not changed.

The right fit.
We just moved mom and dad in and they love their apartment! It's the perfect size for them to downsize to with their age and abilities. Expect to be greeted with a warm smile throughout the building. You can tell staff is happy to be there.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
