There have been 3 Executive Directors since 2022 and at least that many Executive Chefs. While the building and grounds were obviously luxury at some point, they are not maintained to that level now. They are almost always short staffed. However, the staff they do have are lovely and trying their best. Pacifica Senior Living (parent company) does not pay well so it is hard to hire and keep good employees. Hopefully, that will change soon with the new Executive Director that started in August.

Review for The Park Lane
We moved my mom out after one month. It was a terrible experience for her. The staff didn't attend to the memory care residents. There were very confused and agitated people entering her room and it wasn't kept clean. Overall a very upsetting experience

We should mention that this family moved their mom out of our community in June 2023. That said, we understand the trauma of a parent transitioning into a memory care unit and therefore always welcome constructive criticism from our families. Because we were open to feedback a year ago, it became clear that a problem existed in our Memory Care leadership. Our current Memory Care Director started in August 2023, and we have since had positive response and amazing support from our families. As a result, almost all of our memory care apartments are filled. If it would help, we welcome this reviewer back to take a tour to see our memory care area today.

Review for The Park Lane
Great for activities. But we signed a contract and they want to raise the rate 10% our contract says 3-5%. And after getting a verbal ok from the manager the rent bill showed 10% my mother was asked to pay the entire amount and then they would reimburse her! Also contract states how much the charge is for a load of laundry $15 it has been raised to $25 letter sent in a memo without a 30 day notice! And not requiring a signature for a new contract. My mother still does not have a working thermostat in her room! Crack in sink is still there a year later. They move people into rooms that aren't fixed or ready for move in. The Jacuzzi hasnt worked in years (at least 6) but they show you on the tour and tell you they are waiting on a part! They should not have to pay for parking! Intimidation tactics are being used!! Residents were told if you complain (to authorities) people might not live here and we might have to close then where will you be! Management will answer emails but not return phone calls! Residents are not being told their packages are at the front desk. Some packages have been there for three weeks!

We pride ourselves on having friendly and professional staff, so please do not believe those that try to tell you otherwise, as we welcome all feedback. We can say that some of the positive changes in our communities are a result of resident and family opinions. And we often use these suggestions as teachable moments. With regard to the laundry service. Linens and towels are cleaned within your monthly rent. The personal laundry service fee was raised in May. We sent out a 60-day letter followed by individual phone calls. For personal laundry, you can elect to use the service, or (as some family members have chosen) wash/dry your mom’s personal laundry using the available machines at no cost. The “Jacuzzi” is a huge disappointment for us as well, and unfortunately, it was broken long before we purchased the building. We have continually attempted to secure a vendor to fix this once and for all. With regard to contractual issues on rent increases, we would like to discuss this with you personally. Please make an appointment with the Executive Director. We will address any maintenance issues at that time. Finally, it is our personal practice to return phone calls within 24 hours.

New to The Park Lane
Moving my mom to The Park Lane was a huge decision for all of us, and so far so good! Mom is 85, healthy and independent. She has been welcomed into the community and is happy in her new surroundings. Everyone has been helpful and the staff is very kind. I will say it's a little rough around the edges, and the food is mediocre. It also feels like a majority of residents are struggling with mobility. It's an older crowd and not necessarily a vibrant and active community. That being said, people seem happy and there are lots of activities for people of all abilities. But ultimately we are happy with mom's new situation.

ABOUT MAINTENANCE
It’s a paradox. Staff and management are quite friendly. The staff is responsive to requests; management is not. Long-time residents report maintenance problems left unattended to for months or even years. They have grown accustomed to the lack of response. I asked four times for a connection to the free internet but got zero response. The Park Lane holds a monthly Maintenance Chat where residents can speak directly to the Maintenance Director. He promised a fast response (“probably tomorrow”) that never happened. In frustration, I ordered Comcast more than a week later. I find the food generally good. The delay between ordering a meal and its delivery is typically quite long.

Current Park Lane review
I moved to the Park Lane in December of 2022. I had a Traumatic Brain Injury and needed to simplify my life as much as possible. I went for a 2 week stay and felt that I could be happy there. For a while I was optimistic, responses to issues that needed attention were timely, food was healthy and tasty and delivered in a timely manner. Most residents liked being there and felt well-taken care of. Forward 6 - 8 months things gradually changed. Requests for maintenance ignored or done in a way that did not resolve the problem, meals gradually got worse and worse until I really did not want to go to the dining room to eat. In fact, conversations during meals was mostly complaining about the quality and delivery of the food. A dinner could take an hour or more to get. I moved out after being there a year. I WOULD NOT recommend moving there or putting your loved one in this facility. I am not the only one who left, there are many empty units now.

We read every review and share it with the community. Executive Director, Billy Mitchell would like to thank you for your feedback. But you will be pleased to know that the two areas that you mention have been addressed. There is a new head chef since you lived here. And, we apologize for your experience with maintenance, but there are new team members in both the housekeeping and maintenance, and they are fully staffed. We look forward to seeing you in the dining room soon.

Memory Care
I'm rating the memory care unit at Park Lane. The other parts of the facility seemed better, but memory care had very little staff engagement. Lack of cleaning or maintenance, and very few activities. When we visited they showed us the beautiful amenities, described an active lifestyle and quality personalized care. The outdoor garden was very nice and they are pet friendly.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback about our community. We appreciate the kind words about our building and the garden, and that we are pet friendly. We also appreciate you letting us know of your experience in our Memory Care. We pride ourselves on the overall cleanliness and safety of our residents. We are launching more activities and creating ways for residents to interact with other residents, outside entertainers, outside volunteers, and of course our hard-working staff here at The Park Lane. With this focus, we are improving in the area of resident activity and engagement. All opinions are important to us as we take comments to heart and find teachable moments.

Beautiful redwoods, Sad it did not work out
I would not recommend this place to anyone. I tried to work with management but decided it was best for Mom to leave as soon as possible. I hope that one day it will get the care, quality, staff, and nursing that one deserves. One should feel safe, cared for, respected, listened to when residing in a place like this. The building is in need constant maintenance, in need of repair, plumbing problems, the gym has outdated equipment, windows and upper decks never cleaned, and everything could use a good scrub. The landscaping is very nice and the grounds are well taken care of. There is a nice walking path, lovely outdoor seating, huge patio in the back, a top floor for events and view of the bay. Lots of potential one day.

My loved one was initially in the assisted care, think that is what it's called, the higher level of care, and they were not at all timely in responding to their requests. That is the biggest problem that we've had with TPL.

Hire a Private Caregiver because you'll need it
Please do not put your loved one here if they need a lot of assistance because you will NOT get it. They make the bed over my mother's soiled sheets, they do laundry and burn her blouses, they ask our Private how to giver her a shower because they don't know what to do, they are on their phones watching movies while I walk by carrying out loads of trash. There seems to be little to no training. This place is expensive, the food is great, and the gardens are nice. But if you need lots of help, hire a private caregiver, please.

Improve medication management
The Park Lane is a great facility, but there's some work that needs to be done in how they handle assisted living. Right now, we are specifically having a problem with the medication my dad is supposed to be getting. I understand when something changes they will need written approval for it, but at the same time they didn't give him the correct dosage that was on the label and that went on for a couple days - he needed that full dosage. There were instructions to cut the pill in half and the refused to cut it in half because, "that isn't what we do". It seems like they can't administer medications properly. My dad isn't happy about it, he knows what needs to be done with his medication(s). We moved him into assisted living under the guise that he'd be receiving medication management: the correct dosage and in a timely manner at the right time. The maintenance guy comes in and gives it to him and if that's how they do things, then okay. But the timeliness is off, despite the time we've told them. It needs to be given at a specific time, and they'll come in 2 hours earlier. It kind of seems like they want to give it to him whenever they want, so that is an issue that needs to be improved.

I have lived at Park Lane for 17 years in chalet [unit number removed]. The garden was what brought me here. I have spent many hours and quite a bit of money on plants and outside labor to help make it beautiful. All the furniture, chairs, tables, umbrella, large batch of daisies were all donated by residents who live in nearby chalets. [name removed], who lived here was kind enough to help with the bird fountain, a small circle in the middle of the lawn and planted many things; and carrying donated patio and furniture. I love to water the flowers and lawn and it makes me happy. My years of volunteering in art classes, library, book club are over as I am now [age removed] years old.

living at The Park Lane is like living aboard a deluxe cruise liner. once you select your accommodation, you never have to leave it. all the amenities are there. you can order room service or eat in the dining room. there is entertainment, lectures, and excursions as well as exercise classes, crafts, and happy hour. exceptional views, including fireworks, can be seen from the Vista Lounge at the top of The Towers. A Roman-style spa, well-stocked library, and an exercise room are available as well as a mahogany-paneled room for playing poker and shooting pool. there is even an exclusive store, the Serendipity. a beauty salon and massage parlor make living at The Park Lane almost perfect, that, and the exceptional staff led by the Executive Director. all aboard!

there is a magical feeling here. all of our needs have been anticipated, from wonderful meals to entertainment. there are beautiful grounds and walking paths to explore and such wonderfully kind and caring workers to assist. the apartments are comfortable with safety features like emergency buttons to wear and in the bathrooms, also soft night lights and safety rails where needed. Park Lane is a happy "village" with a diversified populous. the greatest features of Park Lane are that one never feels alone and one always feels safe and secure, and there are happy smiles wherever you look.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the California regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about California regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored The Park Lane 6.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
