Aide support lacking, friendly front end and kitchen staff.
The kitchen staff was friendly and engaging. The front desk staff was welcoming and friendly. The activities looked fun and relevant to the residents but my Mom was on hospice and didn't participate. Food was okay. My mom's first meal there was Monte Carlo, which was exciting however it was dry and didn't have much flavor. Most areas were clean but a resident across the hall was incontinent and hid her soiled briefs in her apartment which smelled up the whole hallway. The smell was obvious to everyone so I don't know why it wasn't addressed by staff. Now for the Aide staff. The Angels sounded like angels to me when I heard they check on residents every 45 minutes around the clock. This was the majority deciding factors since my mom needed round the clock care and it was hard to piece together Aides even using more than one agency plus Rochester Regional. I actually had to stop working and take Family Leave because the Aides at The Gables didn't come check for 4 hours or more. Early on I called for assistance and she was so combative. She arrived with another Aide because my mom was a two person lift (a detail known before mom moved in). One Aide was nice when she got in mom's apartment but before coming in I heard her say ' an aide is coming in 45 minutes, why can't she wait for the aide to get here?' Which means she thought it was okay to have my mom in a BM for 45 minutes or more. Like I said, after that we had to spend a lot on yet another agency to cover the gaps in care that I thought The Angels would cover. I was reassured many times prior to move in that this was the right place for my mom. It wasn't what we needed but we ended up being comfortable there for the last two weeks of my mom's life. I am very happy that unlimited visitors are welcome 24 hours a day. A handful of us spent mom's last 3 nights with her and she passed in the morning with us surrounding her.

A Friendly Community
Overall experience was very positive. Most notable is the friendliness of both staff and residents. It truly feels like a close-knit community. My dad was only there for two weeks and he enjoyed getting to know everyone. Dad had a one bedroom apartment that was a nice size for one person or even a couple. The full kitchen was a nice feature but hardly used. Washer and Dryer in the unit is a definite bonus. And the ability to pay an additional fee if more personal care is needed is a plus. Although we never got to that point I had discussions with the owner of the care company and they seemed to offer comprehensive care for a very reasonable cost. Dad really enjoyed the meals and having other friends to dine with was a plus. The only thing I noticed regarding cleanliness was the elevators were dirty and the carpet inside the elevators smelled. There were a few things like doors and walls that needed a little touch up to make the community look better. [name removed] and [name removed] are amazingly helpful, caring, and warm.

The Gables of Brighton
My Mom hasn't been there since last November. She then went to the hospital and is now in skilled nursing. Scored lower on admin because corporate office doubled rent out of bank account. Multiple calls, they wouldn't communicate in writing (email). Ended up contacting bank to dispute charge. Gables is independent only. [company removed] has way too many clients there to assist properly. Had issues with [name removed] to get responses. We wouldn't trust for care beyond meds. Most of her employees were nice and tried their best with the little time they had.

Aides are friendly and helpful. There's no communication there amongst higher ups. Rent isn't worth what is included. Without proper notice rent increased almost [price removed] for services whether you use them or not. Not worth it

Food could be more accommodating to residents needs.
The staff is helpful but the food does accommodate a resident who needs low salt diet due to heart failure. Apartment is single bedroom and it's beautiful with plenty of room.

My experience
The staff was exceptional with the Director being useless. They changed the menu eliminating breakfast which was now continental and just carbs plus paper and plastic utensils. There was no dinner Sunday nights and they frequently ran out of specialty entrees. The apartments were in fair condition. Kitchen cupboards and vanity were in poor condition with missing hardware and dents and scratches. They took [amount removed] out of my checking account and wouldn't give it back. They said I could use it for future rent. Residents friendly and staff mostly helpful.

Reassuring Care for Mom’s Golden Years
The extraordinary support from A Place For Mom was so much of a relief! The Gables of Brighton was nice for mom with good food, entertainment and amenities in her cozy room and more independent living than a nursing home. Lynn's Angels was a relief and supportive during the transfer from mom's rehab facility. The option of having a Doctor make "House Calls" was convenient and reassuring that mom was getting care at that level when needed. Mom is resting in peace while she was able to have her independence as much as she could. My stress was less being that the Gables of Brighton and Lynn's Angels could accommodate her in her time of need.

A smooth and comfortable move for Dad.
People and staff friendly. My father thinks the food is good but disappointed they eliminated hot breakfast. Older facility but he is comfortable in his one bedroom. Seems like there is enough space and the kitchen is very functional. Elevator a little rickety, but overall I think he is happy there so far. Also location is fantastic- close to everything he needs

Compassionate & caring
My parents recently moved to The Gables and we continue to be impressed by the friendliness of the residents as well as the compassion and true caring spirit of the staff! From the front desk and office staff, to the support from [name removed] Angels, our experience has been nothing but positive. We sleep easier knowing they are in such a great place with caring staff to provide a little oversight!

I've been at The Gables for 3 years and I'm happy.
The Gables feels like home because of the warmth and friendliness of the staff and residents. The staff will help in any way until a problem is resolved. The food is important to me because of my dietary restrictions. But, the choices are enough to keep me full. I appreciate the free rides to medical appts Tues and Fri.

Excellent
This is a very well maintained community both inside and outside! The outside is very well hand scraped and maintained. While the interior maintained daily all hallways and community rooms. I make to point talk with new resident at meal time. A modern 3 story building with two elevators for resident convenience. The 4 for dining needs explanation. They have improved meals greatly in the past year but still need more attention to meals and service.

The Bigger Picture.
The building looks good initially but is showing wear. Her room is a studio and has a small kitchen. Has room for a washer/dryer but she doesn't have or need. The stove/oven is not hooked up per our request. The complex is independent living. She (or myself)is required to take care of her unit. Her unit is a bit rough around the edges. Paint scratches, etc. The nursing is another issue. The staff at the gables is fine. We really haven't had any issues with management or dining. She says the food is good! Nursing is interesting. [name removed] said they would be able to handle whatever is needed. But.... They are understaffed! In fact, we still haven't received a bill yet so we don't know what pay level we're at. Communication isn't the best for the nursing. When the nurse who organizes the meds says she'll be there in 5 minutes or so, then never shows up. She uses a pill box, organizes the beginning of the week and uses a cup to dole out the meds. We've had issues with meds being missed. Still working on a system for accountability. Accountability is our biggest issue.

So far I find Gables to be very good
The Gables has a friendly atmosphere; the staff are fun and caring. It is well-maintained; maintenance does a pretty good job with addressing issues. The food quality fluctuates but, they continue to take suggestions and improve. Activities seen plentiful even though I dont personally participate in much choice.

My family's experience
4.5 just because there's been changes since my mom first moving in there and then something not explained thoroughly enough (Aide service). o, the dining room has went under many new staff. They finally have a cook now after not having one for a week or two or sporadic people filling in. The Aide service is fine but for those residents who can't or don't text, it's not a good set up for elderly people. Lots don't know how to text or own a cell phone. Then the pricing of Aides at The Gables. I was told it's $[fee removed] for 7-2; $[fee removed] from 2-10 and then $[fee removed] for overnights. Still not sure how the pricing is but after a $[fee removed] bill. Something is off. So far it's been a good one, despite my mom still trying to adjust but she's getting there slowly but surely. Everyone is helpful and understanding

A very pleasant community
My mother finds the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. [name removed] Angel's have been instrumental in helping her for the past 5 months throughout her back and forth from the hospital. The grounds are beautiful, and she enjoys sitting on the patio with her friends in the evening. They have some fun activities that she enjoys; especially the church service. The one inconsistency is the food. It tends to be on the dry side, and they typically will run out of main entree meals during lunch and dinner. Overall, she has grown accustomed to her new living arrangements with the help of staff and a close-nit community of friends.

A Place for Mom has scored The Gables of Brighton 9.4 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
