Sunrise of Summit
Overall, I would currently rate our experience with Sunrise of Summit a 3 out of 5. It is not a poor facility, but our lived experience has not yet matched the level of excellence presented during the sales process. Our initial experience was very strong. [name removed], the salesperson, was personable, attentive, forthcoming, and patient. The building made an excellent first impression: it is modern, beautifully furnished, exceptionally clean, and only several years old. Everyone we encountered was pleasant. My father toured both a studio and a one-bedroom, spoke with residents, and left genuinely excited about moving there. During our initial conversations, [name removed] carefully explained apartment costs, care levels, medication management, and possible veteran discounts. We left believing we had a clear understanding of what my father could afford and that a one-bedroom was a realistic option. Once we decided to move forward, however, the projected costs increased by approximately $[removed]to $[removed]annually, and the available apartment shifted from a one-bedroom to a studio. We were later told the original figures were estimates, but that distinction had not been sufficiently clear during the initial conversation. Because my father is 80, lives on a fixed retirement income, and made his decision based on the information presented, the change was deeply discouraging. We were also told there was a waiting list and that we needed to make a decision quickly to hold a space. Yet after we committed, the process that we were told might take one or two days ultimately took closer to two weeks. During that time my father remained in a rehabilitation facility costing more than $[removed]per day, and the apartment assignment changed once again from a studio back to a one-bedroom. For families making time-sensitive decisions during a health crisis, pricing, availability, and move-in timelines need to be communicated much more precisely. The apartment itself is clean and comfortable, but the layout is not what my father understood a one-bedroom apartment to be. It appears to be a converted two-person suite rather than a traditional apartment with a separate bedroom and living area. Families should ask to see the exact unit—not simply a model—and confirm the floor plan before making a commitment. Within approximately 24 hours of moving in, my father was hospitalized and remained away for an extended period. Aside from the salesperson, no one from nursing, assisted living leadership, or administration contacted me to ask how he was doing. Since his return, most communication about his care, therapy, progress, and adjustment has occurred only when I initiate it. As his health care proxy, I expected more proactive communication, particularly during his first month and following a hospitalization. This does not mean the direct care has been poor. The assisted living care attendants have consistently been kind, attentive, playful, and respectful with my father. He has generally spoken positively about them, although there have been occasional moments of impatience from individual staff members. The head nurse who met with him after his hospital return was especially thoughtful and spent significant time learning about him, his history, and our family. The distinction I would make is that there are many caring individuals, but I have not yet experienced a consistently coordinated culture of care. Kindness appears regularly, but communication, follow-through, billing expectations, move-in processes, and family engagement have often felt inconsistent. The facility itself is consistently clean and well maintained. Maintenance staff were helpful assembling furniture after my father's hospitalization disrupted our original plans, although we were later billed for some of that assistance after initially believing it was included. Again, the issue was less the charge itself than the inconsistent communication surrounding it. The food has been adequate but mediocre compared with how strongly it was promoted during the sales process. We were told Sunrise was known for excellent food, variety, and changing menus. My father has not found the meals especially enjoyable, and when our family joined him for Father's Day, the food was acceptable but not noticeably different from what we had experienced in rehabilitation facilities. I would encourage prospective families to have a meal during their tour rather than relying solely on descriptions. There appear to be many scheduled activities, but my father has not yet found activities or relationships that consistently encourage him to leave his room. He participates occasionally and enjoys the weekly shopping trip, but he has not spoken enthusiastically about many of the other offerings. Because his continued recovery depends partly on movement, social interaction, and meaningful engagement, this remains an important concern. Families should ask not only what activities exist, but how staff actively help new residents build friendships, discover interests, and establish routines. Race and cultural belonging were explicit considerations for our family. We asked directly whether the community was racially and culturally diverse and were told that it was. In practice, my father appears to be the only Black resident. We occasionally see one or two Asian residents, but there are no Black peers with whom he can build community. Outside of the Black assisted living director, the management and professional leadership we have encountered have been overwhelmingly non-Black. This distinction is important. The Black women providing much of the most intimate and physically demanding care represent diverse Black American, African, and Caribbean backgrounds, but the resident population and broader leadership remain overwhelmingly non-Black. Diversity among caregivers is not the same as an integrated resident community. My father has noticed this, even if he has not described it as his primary concern. In his previous rehabilitation facility, which also had relatively few residents of color, he eventually developed friendships and began leaving his room independently. That has not yet happened at Sunrise. Families of color deserve an honest description of resident demographics so they can make informed decisions about cultural connection and belonging. Affordability is also inseparable from this discussion. Even with veteran discounts, Sunrise is extraordinarily expensive. My father can manage the cost in the short term, but without additional veteran or disability benefits it could eventually consume much of his life savings. Like many families, we would have preferred to care for him in one of our homes, but none is currently physically accessible without substantial renovation. Sunrise became the most practical option during a health crisis, not because it represents a financially sustainable long-term solution. I would encourage A Place for Mom to help families verify whether quoted prices are estimates or guaranteed amounts, review all charges in writing before committing, understand actual move-in timelines, see the exact apartment they will receive, learn how communication with health care proxies is handled, understand what happens during hospitalizations and prolonged absences, discuss resident demographics honestly, and ask how new residents are actively connected to activities and peers. Sunrise of Summit has genuine strengths: a beautiful and clean environment, compassionate professionals, and care attendants who treat my father with warmth, dignity, and respect. My concern is that the sales process reflected the organization's ideal, while the day-to-day experience has been more inconsistent. I remain hopeful that this assessment will improve as my father spends more time there, but families deserve transparent information about both the facility's strengths and its limitations before making such an important decision.

The visit was very pleasant. My brother and I did decide on a different facility as it was closer to my brother and the price was lower. There was also a price lock so the price would not go up while my mother would be living there.

Sunrise of Westfield is a very nice place with excellent care
Overall, Sunrise is a very nice long term facility for Assisted Living & for Memory Care. The facility is beautiful & nicely decorated. It looks like a big mansion from the outside & on the inside Assisted Living section (wide porch, lobby area, TV room, café & dining room). In the Memory Care locked down unit, the combined dining room/activities room is spacious & also nicely decorated. The gated garden is very safe, quiet, relaxing & feels like you are in a country setting with plenty of covered shaded seating. It's a nice area to sit with family, weather permitting. The bedrooms are a nice size, depending on which type of room is chosen. The food is mostly good with alternative choices. The care is excellent, with many staff members working there for several years. On the downside, Memory Care pricing with add ons (depending on medication level, etc.) is expensive. The online Auto Payment system including notification updates needs improvement.

Warm and great community for mom
The time recently came for my mom to make the transition from independent living to assisted living. We did extensive research for an assisted living facility near our home in New Jersey before we moved her from New York. The transition has been incredibly smooth and everyone at sunrise has been warm, understood her needs and interests and have gone above and beyond to make her transition comfortable for her and our family. The facility itself is beautiful and clean and we are thrilled that she is being taken care of by a very professional and attentive staff. We are very happy with Sunrise in Summit and would recommend to anyone who is looking here.

Professional, supportive, kind with great spirit
My aunt has lived in Sunrise of Summit for 2 years. From day one, it felt like home. The people are fantastic - Miss [name removed] is especially outstanding with her kindness and thoughtfulness. We have attended many holiday themed family events and you can see how the staff really knows and cares about each individual resident. The place is spotless, and has the feeling more of an elegant home off the New England coast than an assisted living facility. We toured many before selecting Sunrise of Summit and the difference was night and day.

Our experience with Sunrise
We chose Sunrise of Summit because at the time what we were promised seemed like the ideal situation. We do not feel like we are getting what we were promised in terms of the engagement and activities for my father.

My review of Sunrise of Summit NOW OPEN (Sunrise Senior Living)
Overall good experience, but one improvement they could make is safety. Our loved one has dementia and we wish there was a place for her to walk outside freely while still be safe and secured, but there is not. Also we have had some mix ups with the billing department that we are having troublegetting resolved.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know New Jersey’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about New Jersey’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Sunrise of Summit 6.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
