My 90-year-old father was convinced to go to subacute rehab and not just any subacute rehab. He was fortunate to be accepted to salude rehab in Suwannee that selects patients based on their potential for improvement. Most subacute rehabs are simply nursing homes that take the elderly debilitated pt and provide a little physical therapy. Although salude is licensed as a nursing home,; long-term care is not what they strive for. All the patients in salude as expected to improve and go home. The physical therapy department is 5 star, you will not find anyplace better, especially with the elderly. Most of the money goes to physical therapy which is given twice a day most days. Agency nurses are used to supplement the permanent staff due to the shortage all companies are experiencing these days and we found they were able to get pretty good people. The food could use some improvement but families are allowed to bring in food for the patients. My thought is rehab is why they come.

Run from Salude
I chose Salude because they were 5 star rated. Beautiful facility but care, compassion, and anything to help you is simply a zero. PT & OT were fantastic. That entire department was. There were some amazing staff but not nurses, techs, etc. This all falls to administration and lack of team work. There is no team effort at all. I can list at least 20 things that should have happened for my care and didn’t and at least 4 mishaps with dispensing my medication. Never send anyone there! I’m always happy for anyone reading this to message me on Facebook or however you can find me. Run! Don’t let 5 stars and a beautiful facility lure you in as it did me. One last note, there were some awesome people there other than the staff you see in your room on a daily basis. I was there [date removed]& left against medical advice. Trust me when I say I am much better off mentally with out worrying that my medication isn’t being given to me more than I’m supposed to take. Human error? Maybe but triple check!

Nightmare at Salude
My wife was 63 when diagnosed at the beginning of 2019 with oral cancer. She had previously been successfully treated at MD Anderson Clinic in Houston 5 years before with a combination of surgery and stopping methotrexate, which she had taken for over 10 years to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The cancer returned according to drs we spoke with at Sloan Kettering in NYC when my wife went on HUMIRA last year. One poison essentially replaced another! She decided to stay in Atlanta for chemo and radiation st Emory Midtown, just to be home between treatments. She had to have a feeding tube placed in the stomach the last week of June because of the cancer being on the mouth. She has been living on that ever since. Between [date removed] and [date removed] she had 6 chemo treatments and 35 radiation treatments, and never lost weight or vomited once. By October she was at home full time with relatives supervising ingestion of liquid nutrient and morphine for pain in the mouth every 3 hours. I am blessed to have had adult daughters (2) adult brothers (2) and adult in laws (1) help me watch over her feedings and pain med delivery for almost 4 months so I could keep my job as a lawyer. Private nursing companies wanted $1300 a week not covered by Blue Cross or Medicare!) to do the same thing....Then tragedy struck. One of my wife’s artificial hips dislocated when she tried tying her shoe laces to go see her medical oncologist at Emory. EMS responded to our apartment and rushed her back to Emory for a closed hip reduction (manipulation of the ball back into the socket). The surgeon was not able to get the hip pieces to co-operate so an invasive surgery was scheduled for 48 hours later. That operation was successful but my wife now had oral inflammation from all the radiations producing a constant flow of mucous in the mouth, and a left leg being held together by staples from the hip surgery. My sister and I started looking at the places Emory listed on about 3 pages. Every decent place (North Fulton Hospital; the Glancy Center to name 2) wanted her to commit to finishing therapy in 14 days or less and to begin a regimen of 3 hours a day of PT when she could not even STAND! Then we found Salude. It looked like a perfect fit: stays frequently ran to 30 days and she could still receive the morphine for all the pain she was in. After waiting 3 weeks and speaking to their admissions people half a dozen times, they took her. She was transported there by ambulance and when I left her that night I finally slept through the night after a 3 month nightmare. Was I wrong! While the nurses were nice and the place was new and smelled good, the PA assigned to my wife was horrible. I have been a lawyer 41 years and my wife a Pharm D for the same, in Georgia and Florida. My wife and I were talked down to like we were cotton pickers. My wife’s morphine level was cut in half and the time between doses was doubled. We later found out it was cut even more by a dr who I never met, without him telling either me or my wife! The PT workers started to try and get her up even when she could not put any weight on her left leg, and had to be told to back off. By the end of the 3rd week my wife was so exhausted from the PT she looked pale, was lethargic, could not focus or respond to me when I visited her, and complained of a constant pain level of an 8-9. I asked the PA to give her antibiotics because she was gurgling when she slept and complained of a sore throat and had s fever. She refused. The next night it was the same only my wife looked worse. I got the same PA ([name removed]) on the phone and she actually said “we won’t give her any antibiotics unless we confirm she actually has pneumonia”(!!). I was stunned. To check for pneumonia they called in a subcontractor X ray tech who took X-rays of my wife’s chest and left the room telling me “Mr this place is really not that good”(!). I called the medical director himself to complain and he said no antibiotics unless the X-ray was positive (!). He said the results were ordered stat and 2 hours later I was handed a sheet saying she was all clear do she would get no antibiotics. I left the facility thinking all was covered. The next morning I called the nurse and was told my wife had passed the night well and there were no problems. By the time I arrived around an hour later the EMS truck was there and I was told my wife had in fact developed a fever of almost 101 and was being taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. The PA and all the nurses who entered the room were now wearing surgical masks and gloves. I followed the EMS truck to Gwinnett and my wife was put in triage and then given a private room. The ER dr was very sharp and ordered blood be drawn immediately. Forty minutes later he told me my wife had bad pneumonia and they were admitting her and giving her AVALOX by ZiV immediately. Her temp was 100.6. In 2 hours it dropped to 98.6 and after almost 3 weeks at GMC she is normal on her temp and vitals and able to sip water for the first time. PT starts today ([date removed]). We are hopeful she will be accepted later this week or next for inpatient medical rehab at North Fulton Hospital or Glancy, Aldo part of the Northside family. Forget Salude!! Fancy architecture and new furniture is no substitute for bedside manner and competency. My wife is alive because she left Salude in time to have real medicine brought to bear on her!

I am sorry to hear your wife did not have a good stay at Salude. Over 99% of patients highly recommend Salude after they are discharged. I know I had personally spoken to you a number of times and it did not sound this poor of an experience. We have several PA/NPs that work at Salude with attending physicians. Again we are sorry we did not meet your expectations. You have all of our Salude leadership contact numbers. We would love for you to call us back to discuss further. We do want the best experience and outcomes for your wife. Thank you.

All staff and therapists were empathetic and knowledgeable. All my requests were respectfully received and acted upon in a timely manner. Facilities were clean and functional. It would be better if there were ice machine built into room. Lot of wasted time by staff to fetch it. Also lobby should have coffee, tea, water available.

Thank you for the review and for the suggestions. We do have coffee, hot water and water in the conference room, and also have coffee in the dining area in the morning. Due to restrictions, it would be very difficult to have ice machines in each room. However, agree that this would be better. thank you again for the wonderful review.

As I begin to write this review I would like to start by telling you, my wide had been a patient at Saude a year ago where she recovered remarkably from a stroke with the help of Salude and all of their professional staff. She is now going on a year of physical therapy and now entering into Salude's wellness program. Great people, great program, great caring, quality staff. I will recommend Salude to all families that need help bringing their loved one back to a healthy spirit again!

Being at Saulde for almost one full month, starting with the therapy has made me stronger and able to return home with minimal assistance. [Name removed] and [name removed] have been awesome as well as the rest of the therapy team. Nursing team were kind and attentive to my needs. The nursing aids were so helpful, cheering me on each day while taking care of me. The food is tasty and filling. The environment at Salude is a 5 star top notch facility. Review of Salude
I would like to share my positive experience that I had at Salude. My three week stay at first was very nerve racking, worried about the what ifs and the what not's. That was all gone after my 2nd day at Salude. I love the people at Salude, the professional therapist know exactly what to do, the nurses and CNAs treated me like I was the only patient. They always followed upon me daily checking my pain level, or just to say hello. The meals were always hot and filling. Therapy not only made me walk again, but made me stronger and believe in myself once again. I will recommend Salud to anyone that needs that professional push to get better!

Horrible
Horrible Nursing Staff! Patients wait 20 to 30 minutes after pressing the button for help. One patient was in the shower alone for over 20 minutes waiting on a nurse to help her get out. The patient was shivering cold sitting on a shower chair naked waiting on someone to help her. The Nurses all have an attitude, they are not there to help you especially at night. They just ignore the Patients that buzz for them, until they are ready to help them. It isn't because they are busy, they are all sitting around the Nurses Station laughing and having a good time. Witnessed this first hand. Please do not trust these people with your loved ones.

Salude is the Best
Successful patient review 12/27/17 From Norbert Leahy, patient from mid-July to August 2017 I entered Salude on a gurney on July 19, 2017 for in-patient rehab after orthopedic surgery to repair a fractured hip bone, broken shoulder and broken elbow. I had never been in a hospital, much less a rehab facility. My goal was a quick full recovery. The facility and staff at Salude are first rate. I recovered cheerfully and walked out of Salude using a hemi-walker 20 days later to finish my recovery at home. I could climb stairs easily. After another 30 days of in-home weekly therapy visits by Guardian I was able to function normally. I can walk without a cane and full range of motion in my left arm is almost complete. My care at Salude was outstanding. [Removed]

Great Place Lots of Room For Improvement
Salute is beautiful and the food is excellent, in spite of lacking green vegetables on a daily basis. The therapists are organized, work very hard and do an excellant job. The majority of the certified nursing assistants (CNA) also work very hard, really too hard. They are also very efficient, and greet you with a smile daily. Salude could use more CNAs because some call lights are left unanswered for a significant period of time, ten or more minutes. Although the nursing supervisor and director of nursing are dedicated and often go above and beyond the call of duty, this does not always translate over to the nurses, many of whom lack a happy disposition. Although many nurses are more like pill pushers that do not interact with you outside of given medication and seldom smile or provide any needed care. One of the problems I had was the lying that some nurses did regarding when medication would be given. One time medication was withheld as a punishment for asking that it be given in a timely manner. Then the lying nurse was about to give the wrong dosage and a senior nurse stepped in and resolved the situation. Seldom do you see nurses working together with the CNAs to best help patients. While many nurses are out of touch, their are those that listen, that come in with a smile, that notice when things are not just right and respond quickly. Upper management is the heart of any organization, if employees are not valued and properly compensated then patient guest will also be taken for granted. Neither the CEO, Executive Adminstrator, nor Chief doctor ever came to check after being taken to the emergency room because needed medication had not been given. A bill was given for their mistakes instead of an apology and them paying for their mistakes. Although they would pass me in the hallway, they never smiled or greeted me and no business card was ever offered. Administration fails on manners, sensitivity, and genuine caring and concern. The nurse practioners have bad, insensitive, fake or insincere attitutdes and often failed to listen and failed to include family in the care process as advertised. While mistakes do happen, bad manners, lying, in consideration, and lack of accountibilty are bad business practices. In spite of everything and because I believe people and institutions can improve if necessary, I would consider returning and give them another chance.

Great PT but Poor Nursing
The physical and occupational therapies are very good. The nursing care is poor. The nursing staff does the absolute minimum in regards to care of patients. Some are almost rude when approached. There was minimum assistance with personal care including bathing. Therefore my father developed bed sores. He was also not attended to during the day (except for therapy) when it would have been beneficial to get the patient up and sitting or doing bed exercises instead of laying down all day.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Salude

A Place for Mom has scored Salude 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
