Severe leadership failures, poor hygiene oversight, and zero corporate follow-through.
Our family’s experience at The Oaks at Charleston Assisted Living was deeply disappointing and, at times, heartbreaking.
What stood out most was the extreme lack of leadership and accountability. We raised serious concerns multiple times with the Executive Director and formally requested discussions with corporate leadership. Both my brother and I made direct requests to speak with corporate. Those requests went unanswered.
After my brother posted a review, corporate responded publicly asking him to call to discuss the situation. When he did, the phone rang repeatedly with no answer. He left a detailed voicemail requesting a return call. No one ever called back. That kind of surface-level responsiveness without actual follow-through reflects exactly what we experienced throughout our time there.
One of the most distressing issues involved basic hygiene. On multiple occasions, my mother’s soiled bedsheets were left unchanged for several days in some cases close to a week unless my br

Do your research
Choosing assisted living is never easy, and our family selected Oaks of Charleston hoping our mother would receive appropriate support. While many frontline caregivers were kind and compassionate, our overall experience was concerning due to management and oversight issues.
Our mother, who has dementia, was mis-evaluated, leading to gaps in care. She missed meals without prompting, hygiene needs were sometimes overlooked, medications were not consistently supervised, and housekeeping required repeated follow-up. There were also prolonged maintenance issues that added to our concerns.
When we raised these matters, responses were professional but often procedural, with improvements that were temporary. In our experience, the core issue appears to be inconsistent leadership and lack of accountability rather than the effort of individual caregivers.
Families should ask detailed questions and carefully evaluate whether the level of care truly matches their loved one’s needs.

I received a lot of support from the staff, and [name removed] was very easy to work with. [name removed] was a little difficult. He was a handful, but they worked with me with him. I can't say enough good things. The meals were great, and they could have as much as they wanted. The only thing that needs improving is finding activities for those with dementia. I bought [name removed] Bird houses to paint. Just to keep his mind busy.

Caring and home-like environment

I really like that it is a smaller facility, so you really get to know everyone. They have plenty of activities to keep residents busy. Both of the activity directors (AL and MC) are excellent. And they have family night around once per month. The administrative and wellness staff are great.

When it comes to the meals and dining I haven't tried it but my Dad has not complained. I am extremely pleased. Everyone is very accommodating and friendly both for resident and family members. They are always available to help. The facility is always clean and fresh. I would highly recommend The Oaks at Charleston. My Dad is a resident here and I am glad that I chose them.

Oaks at Charleston review
Turnover of quality of staff at the oaks is an ongoing challenge, especially for the oaks at Charleston. However, these roles (the general staff) are demanding. Not sure I could do it. I am no nurse But the social interaction is really important. The physical and occupational therapy, access to physicians, etc... was a plus. Adhering to a schedule (meals, etc.) is important. Both locations provide those elements.

Not a good fit if you need more support
The price is great but if your lived one needs a lot of support, I'd go somewhere else. They could have Cleaner rooms and Include healthier choices for meals.

BECAUSE OF THE OAKS...I M FREE FROM WORRY BECAUSE I KNOW SHE IS IN SAFE HANDS
The update is that all is well, and [name removed] is doing well. The care for her is good. She no longer can walk, nor stand.
The only continued issue is the care of her clothes. Either it is missing or other clothing from other residents is mixed with her.
Other than that, I give The Oaks an A.
