Excellent Patient Centered Memory Care
What an amazing facility! My sister and I were in search of a new memory care facility for our 87 year old father who has dementia. Chandler Place was suggested so we visited. Having our father in a different facility for the past 5+ years, we have become educated in what to look for and what should be expected. After touring, we could feel the genuine investment and attitude of the staff toward their residents. Patient centered care is the paramount priority for the facility. Meeting residents “where they are” is the resounding theme. The culture from the top down ensures they meet this goal. Every staff member (Memory Care Director/Patient Care Coordinator/Med Techs/Kitchen Staff/Maintenance and Housekeeping Staff) engages with the residents and works together to meet their needs. The staff recognizes that the facility is the residents home and respects that designation. If you have a loved one in need of this level of care, we strongly recommend a visit to see this first hand.

Chandler Place Assisted Living Review
Maybe just my family's expectations, we picked the facility because staff was nice and had a hall that was like a big circle and my husband enjoys walking. I think showering , shaving and giving him his hearing aids were reasonable expectations. Seems nice when 1st went realized not always nice to all the patients. They did not put my husband hearing aides in, did not have him shave or shower was in respite care for several weeks. He seemed happy with food and allowed him to bring favorite snacks in. Picked this facility over others because staff was friendly was more expensive than other and not sure we got our money's worth. They wanted us to leave and not visit so he could get use to place. He became angry and didn't want to see any of the family. Was not a good fit for us. Both my girls said it made them sad to visit him there. Did not feel very welcome when visiting.

I've had a wonderful experience at Chandler Assisted Living
My mother transferred from Chandler Independent to Assisted Living. They have a large staff that strives to assist residents in all aspects of their needs. They are kind and patient with mom's needs. Nothing is perfect, but this is pretty close to family living in their own home. It is clean, and there are amenities such as a wonderful hairdresser, care for nails and feet, good meals, and they strive for interaction with others, and outside entertainment and activities. I'm relieved that mom is in good care.

Chandler Place Assisted Living and Memory Care review
It was horrible. They drugged her up and she fell two times that we know of. Had to have surgery and now is bedridden. We didn't send her back. We had her transported from the hospital to our home. They promised that they would take the best care and did not. I would never recommend them to anyone. My mother in law walked in a happy lady and now she can't walk, or for that matter straighten out her leg that she had the surgery on at all. I pray for all those other people in the memory care there.

Our experience at Chandler Place
At first the facility seemed to be welcoming and open in terms of communication. Hindsight lets me believe it was because they were not at capacity, although that is opinion. Within the first two weeks, my loved one escaped through the garden. The staff did not contact us until AFTER they found her, she had been gone for at least an hour. For after hours visits (after 8pm), we had to be buzzed in and out of the facility. There were instances that we had to wake staff up off of the sofa to be buzzed out. Within six months of our loved one's arrival, they had moved her to the highest level of care without notifying us that there was an evaluation or that they were witnessing deterioration. During her time there, they took her to the hospital on multiple occasions, NEVER notifying us until we received bills. They tests they gave permission to were ridiculous. Overall, the facility looked good, but our loved one's room was a different story. We often saw trash piled, brought her laundry home to do it, noticed that sheets were missing, and saw clothes that weren't hers. Saturated sheets would be left in the hamper, so the room smelled horrible. There were a few occasions where we had to clean feces off of the wall. I don't believe that cleaning services came. The food smelled good, came lukewarm in Styrofoam containers, but was elementary style school meals. Within the last 8-10 weeks of her life, they asked us to bring in a sitter service as our loved one was becoming a bit catatonic and would fall off sofas or out of her wheelchair that they didn't engage the brakes on. I honestly don't feel like they were caring for her much at all. They started to care when she was actually dying, they came in to say their goodbyes. I understand that it is a business, but as we were bedside listening to her respirations slow, a tour was being given by the facility director right outside of her door. I overheard the director tell the couple who were touring "These rooms are more private and we will have an opening here shortly." The lack of tact was deplorable. When she passed a few hours later, the hospice nurse and social worker asked us to step outside the room as our loved one was prepared for transport. The same director giving another tour told the couple touring that the room (one next to ours) had a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, come on, come take a look. I was terrified that they would walk into our room. The husband seemed to have quickly understood what had JUST happened and grabbed his wife from entering the room. The director simply looked at my husband and I and asked if we were having a good day. Overall, for us: Understaffing, lack of interest, and lack of support equal an experience I do not wish on other families.

Pleased overall
We chose Chandler Place over other facilities that we visited because it seemed the nicest that we were going to be able to afford. Although, I am pleased, overall, I think that at times, they seem a bit understaffed....but I think that is the case in many areas these days...Anytime I seek out, answers or assistance, they are ready to listen and assist...

Advocate for your loved ones
Family members need to be engaged with their family members. If not, your parents can slip through the cracks for care. They try their best but like all facilities, they have shortages. I had to stay on top for my mom. They are doing better due to me expressing my concerns.

We toured with Chandler Place and the facility was older and the atmosphere seemed more dark and depressing. WE were looking for a place that felt like home from the moment we walked in; some place that had a bright and cheerful environment.

A good place to take your loved one
They take really good care of this community. This is a very inviting community. They have all of the residents frequently interacting with each other they also take lunches with each other for outings to different restaurants. My loved one is happy here. They also even took them on an outing up into the mountains and saw different things.

Pleasant environment and helpful staff
We chose Chandler Place because of the price point. she was able to have a roommate so it brought the price down, they are pet friendly, and it is a nice looking facility that looks comfortable and not institutional. It was a pleasant place and ended up being a good fit for my mom. I think that they have as a family members always treated me very well. They are quick to call if anything is up and they are informative. I would recommend them to others looking.

Very Sad
I moved my dad from Chandler Place Independent Living (wonderful place) because he needed more care. I thought he would get the same genuine care but at a different level. I was wrong. The facility is run by [name removed] who I believe is a supervisor of the staff . I never met the facility director. My dad received poor care and they eventually forced him out during the Covid virus. It was devastating for me trying to find a place for him. I received no help from [name removed] or anyone at Chandler as I struggled to navigate a place for him. I finally found Carolina Gardens on my own. They were great and took care of my dad until he passed. Be careful if you chose Chandler Place Assisted Living.

Assisted living was nice, but would not recommend memory care
When we first came to this community our loved one was placed into the assisted living which was very nice. After awhile he was moved to memory care which was the complete opposite. Our loved one seemed to enjoy the food, but the rooms were very small, not private at all and anyone could walk into the rooms at any time. \

Very Sad
I was very unhappy with Chandler Place Assisted Living and Memory Care. I moved my father from Chandler Independent Living (fabulous place) to Chandler Assisted Living. He was only there for three months and deteriorated so rapidly. It was heartbreaking. In the middle of the Covid Virus, I was told by [name removed] to find another place for him and was given a short period of time to move him out. Can you imagine how hard this was when all care facilities were locked down for the Covid virus? No one at Chandler offered to help me. The entire time my father was there, I never met an administrator, don't know if there was even one. [name removed] was the person in charge. After two phone conversations with her telling me to find a place for my dad, I cried. She was cold and uncompassionate. The good news is that I found a better place for my father, which is CHEAPER and the staff there are very compassionate. I urge anyone who is considering this facility to shop around.

Home away home
Chandler Place takes the residents out once a week to eat at a restaurant of their choosing, they will take them on scenic drives. They may take them to a Dollar Tree. They also have entertainment groups come in a sing different types of music, as well as play the piano. They provide a variety of food for the residents who all seem quite pleased with the food. The layout of this community is good, they have a great entry way that is always well decorated especially during the holidays. Great dining area, there is also a library where the resident can borrow books. There are also gathering rooms where the residents can come and play games with each other or watch television.

A GREAT Place for Mom
My sister had a VERY positive experience at Chandler Place Independent Living, where our cousin still lives. [Name removed] was typically there to greet us at the front desk as we came and left. [Name removed] is a great chef and there was a generous choice of foods. [Name removed] (left to go to another facility), but he was the heartbeat of CPIL and was available 24/7. [Name removed] plans lots and lots of activities throughout the day and off-campus excursions, so that there is no fear of boredom. [Name removed] may be in finance, but she is all heart and was the tipping point for my sister choosing CPIL. She is the real deal and you can trust whatever she tells you. At one point, I wound up needing to stay in my sister's 2nd bedroom for a few weeks, and the entire staff was SO kind and accommodating! CPIL is a nice balance of freedom and yet feeling protected. And who wouldn't want their weekly (light) room-cleaning service that is included with the base price??? If my sister and/or I ever need an independent living facility again, Chandler Place will be our choice!

A great place for mom
My mother, [name removed], is currently in the Memory Care unit and I have been quite pleased overall. [Name removed] is newly in charge, having moved up the ranks. She is A+++! [Name removed] and [name removed] are a couple of our other favorites. Nurse [name removed] is available daily and [name removed] is on site weekly. Failed my mother in every way imaginable
The last paragraph is probably the most important, but I'm trying to keep it chronological. In the first month of her being with her, they ran out of my mother's medicine and just DIDN'T GIVE IT TO HER for a day and a half. This is an addictive drug and she definitely went through withdrawal in the process along with tremendous anxiety and no sleep. Nobody was sorry, just blaming everyone else. We pay $250/ month for basic med management, but she only has one prescription and they can't even get that right. Also, the ONLY PCP who goes to the facility provides horrific care, with lab tests being delayed for up to 4 days with no good explanation. That's a problem when you're dealing with a potential UTI. Again, Chandler takes no responsibility and tells you to call the PCP (you'll get nowhere). Within 2 months, my mom was so upset with them that that she tried to take her own life. Her explanation to me was that she didn't want to pay them any more money, ever. I'm not saying that's a logical reason to hurt oneself, but it's relevant that it was on her mind. Chandler would not allow her back without 24-hour supervision (and that could not be a family member), even when she was cleared by a psychiatrist to go back to assisted living. Within two months of my mom needing their care, they had charged us rent for the time it took them to get her paperwork straight BEFORE she could move in (a week), they required a $3000 community fee, and raised our rates the following month saying that it's normal for rates to be raised ANNUALLY (that means January to them, not after your loved one stays a year). And no, they won't refund the community fee even though they failed my mother at every turn.

Nice Experience, but Not the One for Us
I had a nice tour of this community. I toured it for my father, and his needs. There were many factors that played into where to move my father to. This is a nice community, and from what I saw everything looked good. The staff was kind, and informative. My questions were answered. The experience went well overall, but it wasn't the one for us.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the South Carolina regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about South Carolina regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Chandler Place Assisted Living and Memory Care 7.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
