Poor customer service
My mother is currently at The Bristol Assisted of White Plains. A big mistake! I have found staff consistently UNPROFESSIONAL I have been personally in contact with the reception, nursing and case management. Whether I have called or come in person I have encountered poor ATTITUDES! When I have inquired about my mother, not only have I been rushed off the phone but given all the verbal unspoken signs that they don't care and don't want to talk to you. I went to reception once upon arrival from a long drive, I didn't know how to use the facial temperature device. Wow! the person at the front desk audibly sighed. Revealed in voice and body language like it was such a HUGE inconvenience that she had to walk over to show me.! It was such a quick thing. Your not speaking to your own families but customers of your facility! The staff could also learn to SMIILE! Most of them you see walking around look like they just ate a lemon! I think the staff has mental issues!

This is a beautiful facility. When you go there you feel like it is a five start hotel. My loved one was not very pleased with the community. She did not really want to participate in the activities due to some issues with some of the staff. Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful and some of them were a little short tempered.

The Bristal White Plains
My dad has lived here for 31/2 years and has received excellent care . The Physical environment is bright and cheery and the rooms are kept spotless. The staff is warm and friendly and always happy to communicate with the family. They seem to have nice relationships with all the residents and my dad is quite comfortable speaking to any of them. Lots of activities offered for the residents . It is very costly, but not sure any other places are cheaper. Would definitely recommend The Bristal!

Stay Away From Bristol
My dad has been at the Bristol for several years and the quality of services has been steadily declining. This is why we are taking him out shortly. The place looks nice, great food service and is clean but the staff are underpaid and resentful. This results in rapid staff turnover. I have been a hospital administrator for many years and can tell you management just does not care; there only concern is keeping there jobs, not patient care. Look for other places.

Mom is in good hands at the Bristol
To Whom it may Concern Our mother [name removed], now 103 years old, has been a level 2 resident of the Bristal Assisted Living Facility in White Plains since November of 2017. During those 14 months, my brother [name removed] and I (he lives in Maine, I live in Utah) have paid her regular visits, usually lasting for 5- 7 days each time, and have consequently had many occasions to observe the staff and the operations at the facility. We find many of the employees to be hard working, friendly, and caring of the residents. They appear to take pride in their work and a number of them go "above and beyond the call of duty” in their interactions with the residents. And, of course, our mother has various favorites, where her face lights up when they enter her room. We continue to be pleased that the facility is kept neat, clean, and has an “up-to-date feel” about it. The decorations during the various holidays always add to the welcoming and homey ambiance. The house-keeping staff maintains our mother’s room and the common areas fresh and clean. The maintenance staff does a good job of keeping things running smoothly and efficiently, and responds quickly to requests for repairs or modifications. The front desk is well managed and access to the facility is properly controlled but in a friendly manner; we are especially happy to note that the sign-in/sign-out procedures are strictly enforced. While not always responding in the quick space of time that our mother hopes for, the staff is professional and ready to help. Nursing care is properly administered to satisfy her needs. Drugs appear to be given regularly and in proper dosages. The food is well prepared with a wide choice to cater to every appetite. (We do sometimes wonder if such an extensive selection at meals is really necessary.) Our mother is too weak to participate in a broad array of extracurricular activities, but we sense that these are well-chosen, quite diversified, and appreciated by many of the more active residents. The senior staff have proven to be very understanding of the residents' needs and stand ready to cater to special requests of family members and visitors. The Bristal has done a good job of communicating any unusual events to us, as concerned parties of a resident. While there is always room for improvement, we feel that our mother is in good hands at the Bristal. [Name removed] and [name removed] sons of [name removed]

Positive Assisted Living
My mom is a resident of The Bristal White Plains and has been there for almost a year. At the beginning we had some settling in issues but overall it is a great place. It could use some updating in decor and food choices which I expect will be happening shortly. The new Executive Director is quite an improvement-[Name removed] has been responsive and attentive to my mom's needs and responds to requests and emails in a timely manner. Another standout is [Name removed] in the wellness center who has made my mom's stay there alot more comfortable and her nuring care in regards to my mom is outstanding. [Name removed] is the new head of the Wellness Center and a hugh improvement compared to the prior employee. She as well returns calls/emails and is responsive to my mom's needs.

Excellent memory care unit with compassionate care.
When my brother's Alzheimer's disease rapidly worsened last summer, I realized I could no longer take care of him and would need to find a nearby memory care unit. I interviewed five nearby places and believe that I made the correct choice. Both my brother and I are retired physicians and I understand the special kind of calling which is required to work in a memory care unit, where all residents are gradually losing ground. The staff of the Bristal, top to bottom, seem to have this calling: they provided sensitive compassionate care from the very beginning. I was initially so upset it took me a couple weeks to finalize what I knew was the right decision. There has been no looking back. My brother is always well groomed and looked after. There is a geriatric psychiatrist who visits weekly and with whom I had a couple of good conversations at the beginning (I may have gotten special treatment because of being a physician myself). I would recommend this paradoxically cheerful and lovely place to anyone.

Offers peace of mind
I can wholly recommend the Bristal White Plains for the excellent caring environment it has provided both for my father, at 96 still living independently, and my mother, who benefited from the Reflections memory care unit during her final years. As I do not live nearby, it has given much peace of mind between visits to know they are so well supported.

Horrible place
My mother has been at bristal white plains for 3 months. My heart breaks every night after talking to her. The food is terrible. She had diarrhea most days. They advertise shows and outings but r always canceled before it happens. Movies r shown every day but not 4 the residents they r often violent, and not something a 85 year old wants to see. The staff is rude to these suffering elderly people. The bristal is not cheap. The ppl we met with before we put my mother in this facility misrepresented themselves. We had a delicious lunch. My mother has been eating garbage. I wish I had read an honest review before we subjected my mother to a horrible living situation as she is facing the end of her life. .

Response from The Bristal at White Plains
March 4, 2019
It grieves us to know that any resident of The Bristal could be experiencing so difficult a time as described here. But what concerns us even more is that we have not yet been able to address this issue, because, to date, no one at White Plains, neither this resident nor her family, has filed such a complaint with us. In fact, we are hearing about it for the first time ourselves through this posted review. And so, we urge the resident or family to please come to us and present this issue as soon as possible. Since the experiences described in this uncharacteristic review are completely incongruous with the caliber of excellence and quality of care that drives our operations at The Bristal — and has for nearly 20 years, and across almost as many communities — we strongly request that the author of this review contact our Executive Director at The Bristal at White Plains at once, so that these objections can be investigated, confirmed and immediately addressed. Understanding this situation is a top priority for us. It remains our great privilege and pleasure at The Bristal to continue delivering exceptional assisted living services to the residents and families who entrust themselves to our care.

A very disappointing and frustrating experience. The assisted living side has much to offer and attractive facilities. I cannot say the same for the memory care unit. Newspaper covered chairs that had been urinated on, staff often sat together at a back table rather than engage residents, they bickered among themselves. My mom fell more than 30 times in the final six months requiring a full time aide on top of their already high prices. Had I not been there regularly no one would have followed up on her needs. My mom had not wanted to leave her home and the level of care made me feel even worse for moving her. Some staff members were kind and attentive but too many inconsistencies. Many senior staff left in the year my mom was there. No continuity. No follow through. Director never left her office to check operations. Find somewhere else.

I liked that the staff is interested in my Mother's personality and preference. They asked questions that would help them to help her fit in and seemed overall to be positively involved with the residents. This is the facility in which I will be placing my Mother.

The Right Move
My sister and I knew it was time to move our mother into an assisted living memory care unit close to us in Westchester, but we had no idea how she would react. She had been living for five years with a full-time aide in her apartment in Queens, and the two were very attached. We were advised not to tell our mom in advance of the move so as not to make her anxious. The Bristal in White Plains was the first place we looked at, and it felt right from the get-go. The lobby was elegant and inviting and seemed more like a hotel than a senior residence. We liked that the Reflections memory care unit was right there on the first floor in a self-contained wing with an activity space, dining room, and only 32 bedrooms. Outside the entrance to Reflections were the Wellness Center, a library, a movie room, a sitting area with snacks, and a beauty parlor. All the bedrooms, whether self-contained or in a "friendship suite" with two rooms that shared a vestibule, had private bathrooms. The day we visited, there was a vacancy in a friendship suite, and we immediately put down a deposit to secure it. Meantime, we checked out another assisted living facility nearby, but decided it had a much more institutional feel than The Bristal. On the day we moved our mother to The Bristal, we told her that her apartment needed some major repairs and she needed to move out for a while to a place where she could stay until the work was finished. We said we had found such a place near us, and we were taking her there now. She got very quiet, then said to us, "You could have told me sooner. I'm not senile, you know." The next day, my sister stopped by before lunch to see how our mom was faring. When she walked into Reflections, our mother was nowhere to be found. An aide told her that when mom saw a group of residents leaving for a field trip to a museum, she announced that she wanted to go, too. We were delighted that she was already getting involved in the social activities. While living at home, she was isolated from friends and hadn't been to a museum in many years. Much to our relief, our mother acclimated quickly to her new life at The Bristal. She made friends, she said the staff was very nice and attentive, and she was comfortable in her room, which we decorated with family photos and artwork from her apartment. Our mother's time there lasted five months, until her sudden passing. But she (and we) were treated with kindness and respect every step of the way. Moving our mother to The Bristal when we did was the best decision we could have made.

3 YEARS AND ALL'S WELL!!!
My folks (both in their 90's) moved into The Bristal at White Plains over three years ago. Although there was an initial adjustment of a few weeks, in relatively little time, both [Name removed] began to feel comfortable and "at home". The most compelling reason for their quick and easy acceptance of "assisted living life" was because the entire staff is so completely accepting, warm and welcoming. From day #1, both my parents were attended to by front desk staff, medication managers, dining staff, maintenance crew, housekeeping staff, activities personnel, and even the Executive Director, Director of Wellness, & Guest Services Director, who all go above and beyond the call of duty everyday. The Bristal facility itself is kept immaculate daily by a hard-working crew; my parents' apartment is cleaned daily, shampooed regularly, and generally well-maintained. They both enjoy a full range of activities (bingo, movies, great parties, entertainment, special holiday lunches, trips, etc.) all in their private Bristal limousine or bus and at the Bistro. We are truly thankful for the friendship, safety, and security that the Bristal provides my folks every single day. Special thanks to [Name removed] et al.

An ok community
This was a nice community when I visited. I think they were under new ownership as they seemed disorganized. They did not seem very friendly and they did not respond to the questions we asked. The community seemed clean, however I did not seem to get the warm feeling we were looking for.

Response from The Bristal at White Plains
May 16, 2017
At The Bristal at White Plains, we strive to be as friendly, open and attentive as possible with all visitors to our community, whether they are the friends or family members of our residents or are visitors taking a tour and considering our community. Our expert staff not only comes highly trained and experienced, but they are also chosen for their congenial disposition and for possessing a genuine love and passion for caring for the elderly. In our industry, this is essential to success, and we never take this “x” factor lightly when searching and hiring for our communities. At all communities of The Bristal, we pride ourselves in creating an environment that is not only warm and respectful to residents — because, after all, this is their home — but also welcoming and responsive to all visitors, especially those who are seeking critical insights and solutions for their family’s senior care needs. In this sense, the excellence we achieve in the look of our community reflects the standards of care we uphold every day. This imperative is inspired by the leadership of The Bristal’s, and it flows straight through to the management of The Bristal at White Plains, which has not changed. In addition to the above, we ask you please to consider this: When it comes to making a choice about an assisted living community, we have found over our more than a decade operating that every resident and family has unique and diverse needs — distinct expectations, priorities, perspectives and experiences — and that some aspects which prove essential for some families are less important to others. This is why we encourage all families who are considering The Bristal to visit us in person, take a tour, ask their own questions, and see for themselves what makes us such a successful and sought after senior care solution in the communities we are privileged to serve.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.
