Former resident’s perspective
Eat in the dining room for 1 week and you will get the true picture. Menu never changes and on most days breakfast was only meal I ate. Many waiters have little training and don’t know what they are serving. After a fight you might get coffee after breakfast. Takes forever to be served and everything is blamed on kitchen. Forget snacks at Bistro-vultures stuff them in their carts in less than a minute. In fairness many staff are good. I got to the point of walking independently again and walked out. I will never return. Don’t believe photos!

Tour experience at The Bristal
The Bristol is very glitzy but I wasn't impressed by that. They also seem to nickel and dime you for various services i.e. distribution of medicines. Who, in an assisted living facility, remembers to take their medications?

Poor care
First off I will say that I hate to write this review but realize it's necessary in order to bring about change and awareness! I'm so disappointed in this particular Bristol my mother has not received the care that she deserves ..there is a complete lack of accountability and communication among most of the staff members...and a non care attitude.... this place does not treat the elderly with the care that's mentioned in there Pamphlet's my family has to constantly check to ensure that my mom has received meals when she's sick and unable to be in circulation there's so much more to mention but out of respect for my mom I won't mention the rest all I can say is that don't put your parents here or allow them to choose this place ....period!

Clean, Friendly Community
I would tell my friends that it seems safe. There haven't been many COVID patients during the pandemic in this community. The communication has been ok, I wish it would have been better. It seems our family is hearing more from our loved one about items, and not sure of the validity. The activities prior to COVID included were: movies, bingo, ice cream social, chair yoga, arts and crafts and dance.

Beautiful and clean, but ....
My mom had lived at the Bristal Westbury for approximately 1 year. First, let me say the place is beautiful and immaculately clean. The food is excellent and she very much enjoyed every meal. The staff (from front desk, dining room, housekeeping and aides) were all wonderful, friendly, caring and kind. The Wellness staff was also top notch. However, my advice is to get everything in writing when signing the initial contract. We were told by a number of people in the executive staff (senior and junior) TIME AND TIME AGAIN that they would be able to provide my mom with certain services that she needed. It turned out they could not legally provide these services and we had to move her to another facility that had an Enhanced Care License. After we made arrangements to transfer her, it was brought to our attention that there was another Bristal who had that license. Had we known, we would have moved her there. It would have saved us much angst and heartache if the people who run the Bristal would get their their act together and their information correct.

Better Than Expected!
My mom has been in the Memory Care unit at The Bristal at Westbury. She is still getting acclimated, but I do see a positive difference in her. They give each resident special attention, the food looks very good, the unit is clean and the staff couldn't be better. The thought of my mom leaving her home after 50 years was overwhelming for both of us. She seems to finally be adjusting, and speaks less of going home. I'm confident I made the right decision for her, and am grateful there is an option like this to provide the specific care she needs for her Alzheimer's.

The Bristal of Westbury - look no further
We are giving a 5-Star Review of The Bristal of Westbury. We are so very happy with the care that our Dad is receiving at The Bristal. It was a very difficult decision to make when we could no longer face the fact that our Dad needed more care than we were equipped to give. Because of his dementia and bad hip and heart condition, etc., home was truly no longer a safe place. Because his children all have to work full-time, monitoring meds, food shopping, cleaning his home, making sure he was safe and monitoring his eating habits was becoming more and more difficult. Another aspect is when he lived home, we weren't truly "visiting" with him, we were "taking care" of things - now, we visit w/him and it is truly a visit. Since we believe our Dad deserves only the upmost in care and living facilities, we chose The Bristal of Westbury. Thanks to amazing ppl that worked at The Bristal, [name removed] and too many others to name and the most amazing, caring person, [name removed] - who was our Rock from Dad's initial Assisted Living stay at The Arbors... and then when he needed more licensed care, @ The Bristal of Westbury. The Bristal is licensed for ALL levels of care - it truly is the definition of "aging in place -- Aging in Dignity." Not to mention that The Bristal of Westbury is immaculate, my Dad and his clothes are kept clean, his meds monitored, his room is beautiful and gives all of us a "homey" feeling whenever we visit and the meals and the Entrée choices are amazing, truly a restaurant setting. The staff is friendly, loving, attentive to all Dad's needs...and to us - They have several different beautiful rooms (one on each floor) that families can reserve to order in food and have celebrations - there are even rooms that can be reserved where the Bristal will provide the food, etc. There are several livingroom styled rooms throughout the facility where Residents and/or their families can visit - the Residents are not just limited to one room that they can mingle in. There are many, many activities to keep those residents that are able, active. There is a beautiful movie theatre, 24 hour bistro, Wellness Center, hair salon, etc. In closing, although a gut-wrenching decision at first, The Bristal has far surpassed all our hopes and brought us peace of mind, we are in peace that Dad is getting the very best of care, in gorgeous, clean, loving surroundings - our visits are happy, he is content in his new journey. If your love one is at the stage of their journey where they require amazing care, look no further than The Bristal of Westbury - you will never, ever have to second guess your decision. We are truly blessed that our Dad is being cared for at The Bristal of Westbury. -- The Family of [name removed]

Rates have gone up! No longer affordable
My mom has been in the lynbrook facility for three years. Her life savings have almost been depleted. I was told several months ago that medicade was going to take over. Instead, I received a notice that the rates per day are going up an enormous amount. Unless your loved one has a healthy bank account, look elsewhere!

Be Aware of Unexpected Non-Refundable Entry Fees
After a review by Bristal staff, a relative was accepted into Bristal At Westbury. Overall, the level of care was thought to be satisfactory. It soon became apparent that my relative would need a higher level of care than first thought. The Bristal staff made it very clear that this would not fit their operating and support model. They asked my relative to leave, with little advance warning. We did find a replacement facility, which was not easy, at an increased cost. But, in trying to get back what we thought was a portion of the initial two-month deposit ($15,000), we learned that one month $7,500 was actually a non-refundable initial fee. Bottom line-out $7,500. This was NOT explained to us when our relative moved in. We were told there was no way to recover this money. Is essence, it was in the small print of the contract. I suggest any new senior citizens considering moving into a Bristal review the agreement very carefully and fully understand that you are paying a significant up-front, nonrefundable fee to to into one of these facilities, should you leave after 30 days. Hope this information is helpful Family Member

Response from The Bristal at Westbury
July 10, 2018
Researching, selecting and moving a parent or loved one into a senior living community can often be a stressful event — for both the resident and the family. There is so much going on at once that it is easy to miss or misunderstand a contractual detail, or perhaps even conflate varying polices between different communities that the family is considering. At The Bristal at Westbury, as with all of our communities, when this happens on occasion, it poses a difficult moment for us, as well. The last thing we desire is to cause the resident or family any undue concern or stress. In fact, we’re here for quite the opposite: to provide care, comfort, confidence and peace of mind. The policy in question in this issue — the “non-refundable community fee” — reflects the same policy in place at all communities of The Bristal; which is, if a resident moves in and stays longer than 30 days, but ultimately decides to seek other options, then the first month of the stay is considered a non-refundable community fee that is withheld from the standard 2-month deposit. This policy is not only verbally shared with the family multiple times during tours, as well as prior and during the lease signing, but it is also clearly printed in both the brochure and the residency agreement, not as fine print. In this case, it appears the resident needed a higher level of care than the family initially anticipated, and other arrangements needed to be made. We fully understand and appreciate how this development might change circumstances for the family. And while we empathize with the family and the new course they felt they needed to take, we can state unequivocally that at no time are the residents “asked to leave with little advance warning,” unless they are a danger to themselves or others, or if the situation becomes unsafe for the resident. Such uncaring behavior is wholly incongruent with operations at The Bristal and would be an untenable service model for any business, let alone senior care. We regret, of course, that the engagement ended in the way it did, but we stand by our actions in this matter. We wish the family nothing but the best for the future, and we will support them in any we can as they continue considering senior living options.

Great Property!!
I really liked the floor plan at this community and how open everything was. They have a great activity program for all of the residents to enjoy throughout the week as well as a wonderful dinning experience. The staff where very helpful to us on our tour and made sure to provide my loved one and I with great information. Overall it was just not the right location for my father in the end decision.

No clear cost
We toured this community when looking for my dad and it was nice. The meals looked good. The issue we had is there was no set price. There we additional costs for certain amenities. They wanted us to get an evaluation with the doctor before moving in and the price could have changed between that time because of care needs. We felt that the cost was too flexible for someone on a fixed income.

Response from The Bristal at Westbury
May 2, 2017
At all communities of The Bristal, we conduct a thorough evaluation and intake session of all residents prior to acceptance. This review helps us determine — together as a team with the family — the amount of additional care every resident may require that goes beyond the assistance with ADLs, the activities of daily living, that comprise the basic assisted living care model. In one form or another, this is standard practice across the assisted living industry. At times, the amount of daily care required may be initially underestimated during the interview; or, perhaps subsequent changes in resident health, habits or evolving family preferences result in the need for greater care or assistance than is originally anticipated. Again, such practice is standard in the industry, as senior health and senior care are an ever-changing dynamic. With that said, rest assured that at The Bristal we operate with the highest standards of integrity, and our interest is never in arbitrarily raising costs, but rather, ensuring that each resident receive the level of care and attention demanded to ensure his or her safety, comfort, health and well-being. Moreover, any increase in rent to cover such additions in daily assistance, whether with eating, dressing, personal hygiene or medication dispensation, is always explored and implemented thoroughly and transparently with the family. They are never unilaterally instituted by The Bristal without the family’s express knowledge and consent. In addition to the above, we ask you please to consider this: When it comes to making a choice about an assisted living community, we have found over our more than a decade operating that every resident and family has unique and diverse needs — distinct expectations, priorities, perspectives and experiences — and that some aspects which prove essential for some families are less important to others. This is why we encourage all families who are considering The Bristal to visit us in person, take a tour, ask their own questions, and see for themselves what makes us such a successful and sought after senior care solution in the communities we are privileged to serve.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the New York regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about New York regulations for Assisted Living.
