Horrible place
Nothing but disappointment with this facility. My sister and I both work in health care and rate the care provided here as poor. If you call to get information on medical/health issues (medications/treatment being prescribed, getting nail care for feet) they don't call you back. You have to repeatedly call to get any answer to anything. After that you find they don't follow through so you have to keep calling them back about the same issue. The Director is rude and has poor customer relations skills- will talk over you when you have questions and I have been hung up on twice by him. Very unprofessional. Overall they give the impression that they don't want you to ask any questions about the care your family member is receiving or not receiving and just go along with what they do. I think they are more concerned about revenue than they are about quality care. Would move my Mom out of there in a heart beat but she is now 94 and is not up the stress of moving

Very happy with Southbrook!
Very happy with the great service our 93 year-old mother has gotten from Southbrook for the past year and a half. All the staff are very helpful and go over and above expectations for anything mom needs. Thanks to [name removed] who did a great job getting us set up and for supporting us ever since. Thanks also to everyone from the front desk to nursing to social to the dining room etc. etc. for all the great service and care! Of particular note, since Covid-19 hit the world, Brenda has shown great leadership and care in making sure all residents and staff are as safe as possible while allowing for family to connect when possible. [name removed] and her staff have shown great attention to the safety and comfort of all residents at Southbrook while keeping family up-to-date via email communications. Their continued close monitoring/testing of staff and residents at Southbrook and swift reaction to any potential issues before any outbreak can take hold in the home has been remarkable! Thanks so much for taking care of mom and giving us the piece of mind to know she is in great hands and is as safe as possible in these trying times!

I was very disappointed with tour. On many questions I have asked the answer was avoided (lack of knowledge?). I definitely did not like her talking negative about competition.

Southbrook, was a lovely on the first floor. The assisted living and memory care units looked like as though not as much thought was given to these areas. Staff seemed caring, friendly. But most residents seemed to be in their rooms. The memory care floor was in the basement, rooms big and well lit, but residents who were out did not look like they had much to do. Place seemed clean.

I've met warmer customs agents. [Name removed] was brusque, semi-condescending which was readily conveyed in the facilities cold, sterile nature. Definitely not the place for my mom.

Disappointed and disheartened
I am writing this review on behalf of my mother in law and her friends at Southbrook. My mother in law has been a long standing resident of Southbrook and has enjoyed her stay over the course of 5+ years. She enjoys the food, social activities and the home's general atmosphere. Until today, I have never heard her complain regarding Southbrook. Instead she has nothing but positive things to say regarding the staff, home and residents. That's why when I saw her on my last visit, I was shocked and disheartened to see my grandmother and her friends visibly upset over the fact that there is no social bus outings especially so close to the holiday season when the residents want to shop, get out and buy gifts for loved ones. There have been no lunch outings, shopping trips, theater venues or even a Christmas lights tour this year that so many of the elderly adore. Some of the ladies had mentioned that there hasn't been any outings in over 3 weeks and no communication from management as to when they will resume. There are no notices or poster posted or even a meeting held to inform the residents and families as to what is going on or simply why there is no outings all of a sudden. Instead, one of the ladies mentioned that when they inquired as to when they will be going out, they were told by management to take a taxi or ask their families to go out. This is an outrage and I personally find this to be despicable and encourage other families and residents to voice their concerns over such a matter. My mother in law pays over $3,000 a month for rent, not including extra services and the social outings were one of the reasons that drew my mother in law to Southbrook as she had just given up driving and now she is not even getting that. Also it is important to note that not all residents have family or friends that live locally to take them out. To advertise that you provide social outings and have a bus that is readily available to drive at any given moment just rotting away in the parking lot is a crime and false advertising. Why Southbrook doesn't have a staff member to drive the bus and take residents out is beyond me. Every other retirement home and long term facility has a recreation manager that can drive the bus and schedules weekly outings. Why hire someone who cannot do either? The ladies had mentioned that in the past all previous recreation managers could drive the bus and would take residents out weekly, so what has changed? Instead, the ladies mentioned that when they asked the recreation manager when she will be getting her license, instead of being professional and explaining the situation as to why there was no driver, she was snarky/snappy in her response and said I cannot just wave a magic wand and get my drivers license just like that. I find it appalling that a staff member, especially a member of management would feel comfortable or even remotely think that it is okay to talk to a group of seniors like that. I am disgusted by the lack of communication but even more so at the approach. Had it been the first time Southbrook was without a bus driver, I would be more understanding that it may be a transitional period where social outings have been temporarily cancelled but this seems to be a trend that occurs every couple of years. Southbrook seems to be losing it homely touch touch and appeal where they are more concerned by the corporate side of things and dollar figures while leaving the seniors to suffer.

Rather disappointed with tour experience. More time was spent discussing the things that are wrong with the other communities I had seen rather than focusing in on what makes them unique and different. It was mentioned that one of the owners mother-in-law resides there..... Rooms/suites are much smaller than depicted on website. When I called this out to the tour guide - her response was to not go by the website as it is deceiving and it needs to be changed. Overall the residence was clean but dated and felt crammed (ie 10 lbs of potatoes in a 5 lb bag)- did not feel spacious. Spoke to a couple of residents - both of their comments echoed a feeling of disappointment yet acceptance as they have no other options based on budgetary restraints. I also didn't see much engagement between the community residents. Many scattered through out the main lobby, yet sitting by themselves.... Was expecting to see at some point during the tour(tour took place early afternoon)some kind of group activity taking place somewhere in the community - to no avail. Tried to get a straight answer from my guide regarding availability. I was told that they have nothing right now......that was it! No offer of guesstimated time line or waiting period. Bottom line is my hopes for this community were extremely high based on my preliminary research on their website - only to be completely deflated following my on-site tour.

Review of Southbrook Retirement Community - Brampton, ON
Our visit started with [removed] keeping us waiting 30 minutes. At this home the Assisted Living and Memory care are in the same area. The central environment for this group is cold and unwelcoming. I certainly know I wouldn’t want to spend any time there. There doesn’t seem to be any engaging activities for those residents in that area - all of the effort for activities seem to be focused on the Independent living group of residents. Definitely would not meet the needs of my father

My mothers new home.
Staff is freindly, facility is clean. Price is comperable or better than other homes I toured. Grounds are well kept. Monthly events calendar, with in house salon, laundry room, chapel, library etc. The facility is a good size without over crowding. The only complaint I hear from my mother and some others is the food is not so great, but served by pleasant staff and in a beautiful dining room.

[removed] was a wealth of knowledge and when I arrived around in the afternoon they were having entertainment in the lobby and all the residents seemed happy. Two doctors and a lot of RN's. The suite that may be available is 423 sq feet and was way too small for two of them. The kitchen was dated and had a bar fridge which makes me nervous as Dad in his walker would have to bend down and that makes me nervous. Wonderfully friendly group of people running this Retirement home

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Ontario regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Ontario regulations for Assisted Living.
