Unrealized Potential
Staff/care: there has been a lot of staff turnover since the opening of the facility five months ago. they have identified some good people to be their shift coordinators, but the bulk of the staff could use some very specific mentoring on the care of the elderly and their bedside manner. An example of this is that my loved one was discharged from a recent hospitalization with supplemental oxygen. All of the oxygen equipment was delivered and placed in the room by the supplier with all the accessories, tubing, instruction, wrenches, and the explicit orders from the hospital discharging physician, and completely ready to use. The staff at the facility did not know how to appropriately use the stationary oxygen concentrating unit in the room nor did they know how to use the portable oxygen tanks that were provided for use outside of the room. Additionally, a rack of Backup oxygen tanks were initially placed in my loved one's room although they do claim to have an "oxygen room" where these were supposed to be safely stored. We mentioned this on at least four distinct separate occasions to both staff and administration and as of today they're still sitting in her closet. Unsafe. The facility also terminated their original Activities Director about a month ago, and there is yet to be a replacement. The multiple activities and services that this person provided have been unavailable since that time much to the disappointment of many of the residents. Some of the caregivers are excellent, yet some of the caregivers really struggle to meet even the lowest expectations. Activities: see above regarding Activities Director. There are no off-campus opportunities offered by the facility. They do not have a facility, transportation van or other conveyance. Food: in these first five months, they have gone through three different chefs. The food quality has been mediocre at best. There are no fresh fruits or vegetables served other than a green salad. The food and menu quality, or lack thereof, has been consistently identified as an opportunity for improvement by all the residents. Despite having filled out an extensive form detailing my loved one's food likes and dislikes, preferences, past dietary habits, food allergens, and sensitivities, and eating schedule, it took a severe reaction to a food she was served that she was allergic to to have the dietary staff attend to this appropriately. Cleanliness: Outstanding! A beautiful, light, open, airy facility all on one floor with four individual outdoor courtyards that are very pleasantly landscaped Apartment: Excellent!! Well laid out apartments with small kitchen areas, large windows with a lot of natural light, plenty of closet space, spacious individual bathrooms, and individually controlled heating and cooling units. Great common hallways that are wide and extremely well lit with railings throughout. Very logical facility floor plan with very nice themed common areas. Very welcoming atmosphere.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Michigan’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Michigan’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Oasis of Holt 3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
