A Small and caring place for dad
Dad was at the Oaks in Pooler for about 3 years before his passing last month. Shortly after arriving there, The Oaks had new owners so many employees were going and new was coming. It has been in a constant state of change and movement of employees. They seem to be finding a good stride now. However, with all this going on with employees and management, I can truly say dad received great care. He had advanced dementia and was getting worse as time went on. As with dementia, he had anger issues and increasingly unable to do most daily tasks. They were quick to learn the best ways to deal with him with love and respect. The employees in the [facility removed]section showed a lot of patience as things got bad. I'm glad that he was there. It's a small area which was great to have eyes on him at all times. It was tough for me finding who to communicate with in management but the best for him. This was his 4 place after 5 years in other places. So I was glad to find the Oaks of Pooler which was the perfect place for him and he liked it there. Also, you should know that I recommend A Place for Mom to anyone who asks. Connecting with y'all gave me access and other information that totally changed things for us. You help take a lot of pressure and stress off of us for the last 3 years. Our saving grace and our angels! We will always be grateful to all of you!! Sincerely, [name removed]Demery proud daughter of[name removed]

Did not meet our expectations and do not recommend for a family member with violent tendencies
Honestly there should be a 0. [name removed] was discharged on [date removed] day due to violent tendencies even though we were told several times that they knew how to deescalate any situation. We found that not to be true in his case.

Review for Oaks at Pooler
It was a nice facility. Nice than any others at the time. And the location was convenient. I would recommend to others. In the beginning it was great but once COVID happened they got very short staffed and the care was terrible. So hard to say now.

Nice presentation, really understaffed. I would not discourage someone from looking at it as an option. All assisted living facilities have a hard time keeping staff. But it's not a place I would place my mother or father.

Tour Experience
We toured the Oaks at Pooler when searching for a Memory Care facility for our loved one. This facility was nice. However, the Memory Care section was a little dreary to me. I've heard lots of good reviews about this facility though, from friends and family.

Nice Community/Friendly Staff
The residents are wonderful. They are understaffed, which has affected the services. It's challenging getting someone to answer the phone. We picked this community, because it was recommended. They need to improve on their communication, and cleaning the apartment. They have exceptional staff, and they are just wonderful. I would recommend to other families. Overall, we have been pretty happy.

Low on staff
We loved the care takers but there isn't enough of them to actually take care of things or care for the people. We liked the staff the most excluding management. They need to improve on retaining employees because half the time there is only one caretaker for the entire upstairs and one caretaker for the memory care unit.

Very Caring, Positive, Friendly Community and The Atmosphere Makes You Feel Like Your Home
I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. This has been a positive experience for us so far. I know the community has an activities calendar available for the residents to engage with. However, my loved one doesn't get involved with the activities so I'm unsure how much they have. The staff make sure to invite my loved one to the activities, though. There are three meals a day, and the community provides a menu for the residents to choose from. The community will bring meals to the resident's room if the resident doesn't want to go to the dining room, or unable to go to the dining room.

Very Welcoming
I think this is a great place for my loved one. The outdoor section is very welcoming for the residents. The community has a pleasant smell. They are making changes with the employees in the memory care as well as the community overall. The community is very clean. The staff overall is very nice and friendly. They even took photos of my loved one and sent them to me to allow me to see what my loved one was up to, since I wasn't able to visit for a month. They were very helpful in getting insurance set up for my loved one to be able to pay the bills.

Encouraging Review
This is a smaller community and I like it. All of the caregivers personally know each of the residents. They treat them with respect and the residents are encouraged to bond with one another. They go shopping together, they play games together. They just encourage friendships here. It is like an all inclusive vacation for my loved on and she loved it.

This is a special place! Clean and well maintained. Staff interacting with residents by name and were kind and professional. Overall program has well-defined levels (Assisted Living) that clarify the level of care as the disease progresses. Working Out a Few Issues, But Overall a Good Place
My mother seems to be doing well at this community. There are a few issues we are still working out with the community, but overall it has been good experience. One of my main issues has been the meal experience. She is on a restricted diet. At first there was a problem with the chef adding salt to the meals, which she wasn't supposed to have. They have gotten better with the salt issue, but now it seems like she eats the same things all the time. It is a brand new facility, and they are still working out a few problems. She does have a nice room, and they do a good job with the cleanliness of the community. The staff is extremely nice, and attentive. They have nice activities available. It is a good community overall, and I would recommend it.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Georgia regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Georgia regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Oaks at Pooler 7.7 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
