Review for Hazelwood Community Apartments
The facility went from a 55+/Disabled persons to a general population facility. There were drugs being sold in the building, homeless people gaining access to the laundry. I had packages stolen from my front door. I can't afford to live elsewhere, so I'm stuck there. While I like my apartment very much, I wouldn't recommend this facility to elders.

You get what you pay for
My mother moved into the Hazelwood apartments in 2021. The security declined steadily, to the point that homeless people were frequenting the “secure” building using the hallway restrooms and residing in units with paying residents. Several maintenance issues were not being addressed even after residents reported them multiple times. As of 2023, most of the community amenities and services have been discontinued. The dining service, site-operated transportation, hair salon, many of the group activities and other advertised amenities are gone. The self service laundry room, which was included in the cost of the rent, now requires a fee per load. The management company uses a phone app for payment; not exactly senior friendly. The visitor and resident parking lots are consistently in need to better cleaning. Two improvements are security cameras being installed and the main gate code is no longer available to permit non residents access.

My Experience
I am currently a resident at Hazelwood Community Apartments and overall it has been a good experience. I didn't sign up for meals or housekeeping, so I can't comment on those. All of which has since gone away. Shortly after I got settled in with my move to Hazelwood Community, we received an announcement that Hazelwood will no longer be designated for 55+ and disabled persons. All services dismissed, they turned this into a low cost housing project, letting the general public in. I would not recommend Hazelwood Community Apartments for elders, safety is an issue.

Avoid at all cost
Place is a lawsuit and criminal investigation waiting to happen. Horrible management, horrible treatment of residents. Current management is doing everything they can to make this place as miserable as possible. They're getting rid of the food, laundry, and cleaning services. This is a retirement community of seniors, many wheelchair bound, now scrambling to figure out how they're going to eat. They even removed the library tables where people would gather to do community jigsaws and trade items. Last manager was fired due to illegal activity involving fraud. Told my mom she couldn't have her patio statues, then took them and gave them to another resident. When we tried to get them back, current management insisted they were Veridian property. We at least got the raccoons back, but not the bear...yet.

My experience with Hazelwood
Their advertising is all a lie. All they care about is collecting your rent. Management doesn't care about anything regarding people's quality of life! They've changed the criteria to move in here. If you're disabled, you qualify. But then there are no reasonable accommodations related to your disability. Everything is denied and we're told that we need to pay for everything ourselves. No food is offered for new residents at all. They trick you into thinking that they offer all of the services that they used to, but they don't. They're phasing out everything including housecleaning, the beauty salon is gone, the activity room is too small for people with wheelchairs or scooters. All of the rooms that are supposed to be open for activities or physical exercise are locked up and management is not available after 4 o'clock every day and not at all on the weekends.

Meets basic requirements for the cost
We moved my mother in after she lost my father, and her income was significantly reduced. This is what she can afford with only social security benefits to live on. Our initial experience was very good, the process was straight forward and it didn’t take long to apply and have her income verified. Her one bedroom unit is clean and comfortable. Her rent includes all utilities (minus internet), and use of a common laundry room. The comment areas are kept clean. The parking lot needs more attention. No rating on the dining room as she doesn’t use this feature. After living at Hazelwood for a year my mother has reported that the change in management has not been positive for the community. Maintenance is slow with repairs. The no smoking policy is not enforced. The reception desk is rarely staffed now. Security issues are more frequent. Non residents (i.e. homeless or friends) are entering the building at the street level, staying with residents, and using the common area restrooms.

Overall a Great Place to Live
Even though Hazelwood is in a terrible section of town, it's a fortress. It is surrounded by tall iron gates that you have to have a code to access. And you also have to have a code to enter the building. The newer residents seem to be of a lower socioeconomic status. And while the community has smoking rules, they are neither obeyed nor enforced. The long-time residents are friendly and partake in a lot of the activities. In some of the units that have carpet, the carpet is like brillo pads and desperately needs to be replaced with Pergo or something of that sort, to avoid rug burns if a resident falls. Also, if you have an incidence of bodily fluids on the carpet, they'll clean it but not replace it, which is disturbing. I have one of the units with the Pergo carpet and love my apartment. And I've had nothing but good interactions with the staff. Every place is going to have little things that are annoying, but overall I'm really happy here.

Safe, Clean, and Affordable for Low Income Seniors
The process was smooth. The manager we worked with was helpful. The neighborhood isn't as good as it could be; however, I feel my loved one is safe and the security is good. I would recommend this community if you are in a similar financial situation.

We found a place!
There is a wide variety of residents here, including a wide range of age groups. If you have a pet, it might not be a good place. There's just a small patch of grass to take them out, and you have to leave the property to walk them since there's really no place for that on-site. I think that's their biggest downfall, that there's not enough room for animals. In general, the place itself is pretty good. My loved one has had a couple of maintenance issues that have taken a while to resolve. It's an older place and starting to show wear. But from what I've seen, it looks very clean. Overall everyone has been very welcoming to her. The intake lady was fabulous. They have activities posted when they're able to offer them. With the pandemic, activities are not currently going on. But otherwise, they have a nice variety - crafts, bingo, the general things you would see anywhere. Heat and cable are included in the monthly rent, as well as laundry centers where they don't charge to use the machines, which is phenomenal to me.

Great place for loved ones and great value for low income families
Our families experience has been great so far, and one of the deciding factors was the value. It is great and it is more of an al la cart value so we can pick and choose what our loved ones need. Also our loved ones have a kitchen in their apartment so they still have a sense of independence.

My review of Hazelwood Community Apartments
I chose this facility at the time because it was a better price over some others that I looked into. The apartment sizes here are very adequate. When the kitchen was open, the food being served was very good. You option to just pay rent or you can add meals onto there as well, I just changed to rent only. Overall, I would recommend, they try really hard. Prior to covid I was quite happy here.

Something for everyone
I have lived here for four months, and have found it a great experience. Friendships develop quickly, and there are people here from all walks of life, with fascinating histories. Many use walkers, some are in wheelchairs. Pets are allowed; I enjoy meeting them, too! The apartments are well designed, with large windows in the living room/kitchen area. Meals are included in the monthly rent, and are quite good. It is very easy to gain weight here! There are several activities offered, such as pinochile, rummy cubes, huge jigsaw puzzles, Friday afternoon cocktails and entertainment, a large on-site library, and a huge outdoor patio with astroturf on the second floor of the building. There is extremely good security, gated parking, and two bus lines and the MAX are within two blocks of the building. I’m glad I live here!

A Place for Mom has scored Hazelwood Community Apartments 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
