About the facility
Hartwell Place

Assisted living Memory Care for seniors on Chicago's northside

Located in Andersonville, Hartwell Place is a welcoming, intimate assisted living community specializing in memory care for older adults. With 28 private rooms, Hartwell Place is intentionally small, because we know that familiarity and connections are the keys to a good life with dementia. Here, no one is a stranger – we see ourselves as family.
At CMSS, memory care isn’t just something we offer – it’s something we’ve pioneered. One of the first organizations in the Chicago area to specialize in dementia care, we’ve been supporting individuals living with memory loss for over a century.
We opened Hartwell Place 25 years ago – over the decades, we’ve learned that exceptional memory care is about more than a safe and supportive environment. It’s about creating a place where residents feel truly seen, valued, and loved – where they can thrive, not just get by. A place to call home. With a high caregiver-to-resident ratio, Hartwell Place creates a vibrant, joyful, and engaged lifestyle that helps residents feel at home and stimulates their mind, body, and spirit.
Welcome to our home!

The team at this community is kind and attentive. The community as a whole brings an intimate home-like feel where someone can be themselves and feel comfortable like they would in their own home. Their attention to memory support has been such a breath of fresh air to the clients I've supported that have dementia. I would definitely recommend scheduling a tour of this community if you are looking at senior living options!

We looked at other places and we chose The Hartwell because when we walked in it instantly resonated with my brother. They have had the same chef over 30 years and the staff have been there a long time. They pride themselves on the fact that the food is amazing. It is a smaller community with only 28 residents and they are very focused on them and it is strictly a memory care facility. It was clean and everyone was super friendly and welcoming. We never even had to hesitate, he is so happy here. They are keeping him engaged all the time. We would give staff more than a 5 if we could. I would highly recommend them to others looking. It is expensive, but you cannot put a price on the peace of mind.

Small facility
Overall everything is going fine at this facility. There are a few things that don’t get done when you request it however. This location is very convenient for me in being close to my house. My love one doesn’t necessarily require too much besides his personal care. The staff is very good in letting me know on how my love one is doing. If there was a fall they would call me up right away to update me. I’m actually having a meeting with them concerning about the changes with my love ones care. So I appreciate how they are very communicative. The facility is small and keeps it very easy. I absolutely recommend this facility to other people.

I toured this community for my mother, and her needs. The experience went well. Everyone we met was kind, and friendly to my family, and I. The community looked nice, and the staff was friendly. My questions were answered. The experience was a pretty nice, but I did find a better match for my mother, and her needs.

Mother in Law In Good Hands
My mother is all settled into this community, and she is doing as well as can be expected. We do feel comfortable with the care she is receiving in this community. They have a good staff, and we know she is in good hands. They have been friendly, and also helpful when needed. When we come to visit the community is nice, and clean. Everything is working out well, and we are satisfied with this community. I would recommend it to my family, and friends.

The Hartwell: a supportive environment for memory support
My mother has lived at the Hartwell for less than two months, so we do not have a lot of experience with the residence. But we searched hard to find the best situation, and having looked at many places in the area, settled on The Hartwell, and felt fortunate to get a room. The staff are friendly, the activities seem to be well-organized and plentiful, my mother (once a wonderful cook) praises the food, and the facility itself is a pleasant building on a quiet residential street. Assisted living expenses are very high, and those at The Hartwell are no exception, but it is also much cheaper than other places we looked at - we are spending several thousand dollars less per month than we might have been. So far, our experience have been a very good one.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Memory Care. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Illinois’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Illinois’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
