Brookdale is a nice place for your loved ones.
I got my brother in Brookdale Chatsworth last year. It was clean ,safe and friendly. He enjoyed it. The staff was supportive and helpful. Sadly one bad person stole my paintings or they magically disappeared from his room. Mystery unsolved. He enjoyed his time there before he moved on.

At the end of the day, it gets a four out of five with a room for improvement
Mainly, it seems like your executive staff is overstretched. It was always very hard to get papers filled out. It was always very hard to get someone to talk to me who I needed to talk to. They accepted my mother without really knowing her condition they really need to look into who they're accepting first my mother only lasted their five weeks because she was wandering, and they couldn't be responsible for that. She was diagnosed with dementia as soon as I took her out of there obviously she had it when she went in there. It doesn't happen overnight like I said only there five weeks. It was a real uncomfortable and unfortunate situation and then I try to charge me the $[removed] for the community fee.

Our family's experience
When it was Brookdale the experience was pretty great, 5, across the board. Some small things, like we had a roach in my mother in laws apartment, but they dealt with it quickly. Otherwise the support was great, the food was great, the activities were great. Since it was sold the experience has been about a 2. The menu options have become much more limited, the services too. They only recently fixed their bus so for a long time they didn't have reliable transportation. From what I understand many residents moved out. Things have tended up since then a bit so hoping it improves but TBD.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this facility. My dad has full-time care and is very happy with that . The only thing I can say negatively is that they use plastic silverware in the dining room and I know the residents are not fans of this.

Would not recommend
1: 1 overall experience was lousy. Admin was poor in getting back to us. Billing and contract problems, the social director didn't encourage my mom or find her a good group of people to eat with unless I bugged her multiple times. Watch the sales team, they will try to confuse you and upsell you when signing up.
2: 3 cleanliness didn't smell, were a few cockroaches in my mom's room.
3: 4 Friendliness. They were good. Ok
4: 2 They will make you pay for everything. They left my mom in her bed all the time.
5: 1 Bad!
6: 2 edible. So so.
7: no idea since my mom didn't do much. I'll give them a 3
8: 2 prices are good if you are independent but they make you pay through the nose for every little thing.

Homey atmosphere

Staff not equipped for Dad's care
Brookdale was clean and the staff was friendly, but they were far from equipped to deal with my father's care. The laundry was supposed to be done weekly, but I often had to remind management because my dad's laundry had not been picked up. I sometimes found his food on a tray in his room, hours after mealtime. He told me no one had come to feed him, yet he was incapable of using his arms and hands. Also, I was informed by our personal caregiver that she had twice arrived in the morning and found an employee sleeping in the chairs in my dad's room. By February of this year, I realized they were not giving him the care he needed - or that we were paying for - so I gave notice to Brookdale that he would be moved by the end of the month. The director asked me to please give them another month to try to correct the problems, and I agreed to do so. Things improved briefly, but went back to the same issues very quickly. I searched for a new place, and found a 'board and care' facility in a private home with only 8 residents and moved my father there. Everything went well thereafter, except for an on-going billing dispute with Brookdale. Overall, I would say Brookdale, Chatsworth is decent for able-bodied seniors, but definitely NOT for anyone bedridden.

Lack of transition services for new residents - even under extraordinary circumstances
The place had bad water damage from storms - after 2 weeks my mom's roof leaked causing damage to the walls and ceilings and requiring her to temporarily be moved to another, much worse unit with no natural light. This also mean she lost access to her Cabke tv, etc and that we had to move all her stuff and set up her unit multiple times. The lack of light and lack of TV made her fall into a deep depression - she refused to shower (because she couldn't figure out how to use the shower on her own). This lead to her having a severe uti which turned septic. She lost consciousness - was hospitalized and suffered severe mental deterioration - we had to move her to a board and care facility approximately 6 weeks after she first moved into Brookdale. She lived an additional 4 months but never received mental function and needed care for all daily living activities. We wound up being charged 14K for 6 weeks because they made up give notice and did not refund much of the community fees. While the situation with the leak was not necessarily their fault, they were not very helpful - giving us inaccurate estimates of when she could move back to her initial room etc. I will say the staff was very friendly and the activities were good - what they lacked was more personalized transition services (especially in light of the extraordinary circumstances).

The residents are happy
The interior needs an update. The experience was better than expected. Based on comparison to other facilities the price was good for what you get. They did seem a bit short staffed. Disappointed they didn't have memory care so we had to pull my mom out. I felt a majority of the residence were happy there.

My dad says all the staff have been kind, nice, and friendly to him. Although, my dad has not required personal help so far, so he independently takes care of himself. The housekeeping is good and basic and takes place once a week and is sufficiently done. He says the food is basically good but sometimes has to wait a long time to be served. Lack of staff, maybe. The move in process went well as you are on your own in doing so from help from family members and/or friends.
They have quite a list of activities to offer. There hasn't been a lot of communication on behalf of my dad since he's independent. There would probably be more if he was personally being cared for by staff. He has his own nurse practitioner through Brookdale's medical program and his medical insurance that comes in regularly from outside of the home.
