The director was on vacation, but she...
The director was on vacation, but she had arranged for us to be shown around by someone else from the admissions department. That person must have been having a bad day because she really gave us the bum's rush. Very strange! She even breezed right past the therapy clinic, which is actually one of the very positive points of the facility. She was also uninterested in showing us the nursing facility. She knew my mom had a stroke and that we are focusing on rehab. On the positive side, she gave us a copy of the facility's last site visit report. All that having been said, the facility spoke for itself. We were very pleased by what we saw - especially the proximity of the nursing/rehab portion of the facility to the assisted living portion. The residents really appeared active. The negative thing is that none of the rooms include mini-kitchenettes (sink, micro and mini-fridge), which seem to be standard in many other places we have seen. Also, not all the rooms have showers. Finally, after talking to an elderlaw attorney, about putting my folks, money in a special needs trust, it looks like a "buy-in" community of this type wouldn't work for my folks.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Maryland regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Maryland regulations for Assisted Living.
