A nice community.
Unable to answer the meals and dining service since my mom was on a nectar thick liquid diet due to swallowing difficulties. Small unit with good sight lines to keep an eye on the residents. Dining/activity room has large windows allowing lots of light which make the area bright, cheerful

Our Experience
We pulled my husband's aunt from the facility. Two significant increases in rental and services without much notice raised the rate more than 20%. Also, we had employed hospice to come alongside, who came daily during the week, thus reducing the staff burden at Cedarhurst. Yet they still raised the monthly rate of increased services. We had to call a meeting with the director. Hospice present. Care was good in the early months, and horrible in the months up to leaving there. Aunt was left in a wet bed many times. We were present everyday, so we were on top of her care. Many other deficiencies. Auntie was bed ridden, so activities weren't used. Cedarhurst did have a wonderful activities director and help. Very kind and many things for more fit residents. Director was difficult to deal with at the end. Said her hands were tied with the poor care and she couldn't do anything about it, as she had threatened people with losing their jobs. The same day that she said that, my aunt was again urine soaked through the mattress pad. I took the director with me and told her we were moving our aunt. She advised me that where we were considering moving wouldn't give auntie good care. She was wrong. It's not how much you pay or how fancy the place is, that's for certain.

Skip this Facilty
Don't be fooled by this newer beautiful facility or the tour. Many residents just leave after constant unresolved problems & do not bother to do the right thing and report them. Understaffed & lack of caring staff, poor food (frozen or canned). My Mom repeatedly did not get regular showers, problems with meds and many residents no one even looks in on them. High turnover of staff and directors. Many problems that they just don't care to make better. It's a business and a poor one.

It was a beautiful but more expensive facility and a little too big. I felt my mom would have been overwhelmed. The tour guide was very nice and helpful.

A Caring Community
The staff was very friendly and caring. They showed a lot of interest in our loved one. The only negative was the food as it was a little less average. The quality of food could be improved upon. There were meals a day served to the residents. There was a standard menu for the residents could order off of if they didn't like the special of the day. The staff communication was good with the family when we had questions or concerns and they were responsive.

This is NOT a good place for mom!
After 14 months of medication dispensing disasters, lack of communication with nursing and management, and overall poor and unattended care, we moved our mother to a new facility. Cedarhurst of Dyer is a business, not an assisted living facility.

Our Families experience
Our loved one has also been in two re-hab centers recently. Both have assisted living accommodations but based on care in the rehab, neither compare to Cedarhurst. Cedarhurst is head and shoulders above and it all comes down to the compassion of the staff. Turnover is high which is not unusual but every new staff has been great

Do not consider Cedarhurst
This was a nightmare with my Mother here. They messed up her meds. The worst was when the director of wellness Lisa came into my Mothers room & threatened her. She had Covid, couldn’t swallow & told her she couldn’t stay there. I was with her the Second time this bully came in & threatened her. They give you the CEDARHUST promise, if they can’t resolve an issue & you move out within 60 days, you will receive your rent back. They DO NOT HONOR THEIR PROMISE. We were not the only ones complaining about this bullying behavior.. we are in the process of writing the Better Business Bureau & speaking to an Attorney. No one should be allowed to treat people, especially vulnerable Seniors with such mean hostile behavior. They claim they’ve addressed this, but in reality they have NOT! The expense of moving her in and out was worth my Mothers mental & physical health. This is not the place to put an elderly relative. Shame on Cedarhust for the treatment & outright lies!

Beautiful Facility & Caring staff
I do think that the staff & everyday workers are very kind, attentive, and professional. Cedarhurst is a beautiful facility, the building itself is beautiful and lovely to look at. My loved one has a good view from their patio, which overlooks the courtyard filled with freshly planted flowers and vegetables. It's very nice. When it comes to communication between the community and our family, the nurses and CNN's are quite good at communicating. I have, however, had some issues with administration. They were supposed to give me a call about something, but they never did. Thankfully I'm very proactive and I was able to take care of the things that were lacking. I'm not saying this to complain as there's no perfect place, but for example: Cedarhurst only has certain contracted hospice facilities that they allow in. The hospice we wanted to use was not allowed in the building and that wasn't communicated with us in the beginning. It's not a big deal because the hospice we ended up using was great, but it still should've been communicated because people typically have personal preferences for that sort of thing. Also, to my knowledge there's no Director of Nursing on-site. There's no office for that person in the building, so I believe she's based out of Corporate. She does visit the building sometimes, but again, she does not have an office in the building where you can directly call her or stop by to visit. I've never had to communicate with someone through email only, but that's how it is here. She can't be reached by phone, you have to send a message so that you can be contacted via email. I tried to leave a message for her to call me once and that didn't go too well. This may be a transitional thing, because there was a Director of Nursing in the building previously. But I again, used my persistence to overcome those communication issues. These are all things I've expressed to them, and every issue I've had has been resolved well. It just took a bit longer, which is ok because no place is perfect. Overall I would recommend Cedarhurst of Dyer to others

Bright & Cheerful
We liked the facility, however they had a lot of agency staffing due to different circumstances; e.g. the pandemic, unable to hire people, etc. That was the only drawback, so sometimes the continuity of the care just wasn't there. Aside from that, Cedarhurst of Dyer was bright & cheerful and a couple of the staff that were there went the extra mile. Communication between the community and our family was just okay and that had a lot to do with whoever was working that day. If it was mostly agency staffing that day, they didn't quite notify us as often as we would've liked. Overall, I would recommend Cedarhurst to others.

Bad nursing care
Beautiful facility, opened too soon, can't hire or keep regular staff. Employees are constantly changing. If all you need is prepared meals, once a week housekeeping and a bit of activities the place is ok. The problems start if resident needs help with incontinence, in this case just choose a different place.

Go elsewhere
This new facility looks beautiful but uses mostly agency staff where they do not know their patients, many agency are there for just 1-2 days and do not provide adequate care. Food is terrible and despite overwhelming complaints from families nothing is done. Many management overhead changes in only 6 months obviously due to family complaints.

Cedarhurst
I think the facility opened too soon. They don't have enough staff. They heavily rely on agency. The medication issue has been a complete nightmare. I sometimes feel like moving my mother but it is such a complete time consuming endeavor to do that. She is almost 93 years old. The food is not appropriate for seniors. I have continuously asked for a mechanical soft diet but they still send tough ribs. That is not soft. There is a tremendous staff turnover. It is not worth the money that we pay. I was so optimistic about this beautiful facility but not worth the money. 90% of the staff are friendly but there are a few that have horrible attitudes. If I did not have a handicapped husband who is 83, I would bring my mother home. I just cannot take care of both of them.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Indiana regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Indiana regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Cedarhurst of Dyer 6.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
