[Name removed] is excellent! Both visits were well received and our mom was definitely happy with what she saw. We (siblings) were happy , also. There was no negative regarding Carmel Village and it was/is our first choice after all our visits in the area. The problem we have, and we sorely apologize to[Name Removed], is we did not realize how difficult it would be to find a way to control her meals. Our mother has no self control and her meals must be strictly controlled. Her medical issues would have been easy for her care there, but for the type of food intake. She would not follow her correct diet. We just didn't realize it until we sat down and saw what our mom selected. We had been taking for granted it would work and hospital visits to emergency would be in the past. Thank you for all your attention and consideration. Best regards, Leonard and Christine Jusks

I thought that the rooms were a little small for me. Some of my furniture is large and I don’t think it would accommodate. I am also not that crazy about carpet. However, the ladies that took us through was very pleasant and informative and did her best to convince us that this was a place for me, but I don’t think it is. I appreciate the fact that she was so nice.

Them not following through thru on things that they told us they would do, played a big roe in my score. I feel we need to give them longer for everyone to adjust but I would recommend.

Overall experience: the caregivers work hard to care for patients, but it's sometimes hard to communicate. Example: 2 caregivers prepared my wife to be fed her lunch. Wife complained about pain in shoulder and a meds distributor was called for. Wife has Parkinson’s. An assessment revealed no clear action to be taken. Then they left without saying anything. After waiting l was told the caregivers were serving lunch. Bringing in resources to deal with physical therapy, nurse assessments, and some activities rates 5.

Our families experience
What we like the most about the community is that the staff in my mom's section is friendly and engaging! One thing that might be different is my mom's room is larger than others with big windows to look out over the courtyard. It's a big help for her to adjusting to not being in her home. Yes, we would recommend Carmel Village to other families based on the experience so far.

Do not recommend
We had serious issues with medication administration at Carmel Village. These included missed and incorrect doses. We also had significant challenges with the food. What is served is not healthy. Menus did not match what was published. There was not the flexibility regarding food orders we were told there would be, including portion management. While most of the staff was friendly and tried to be helpful there were some who did not seem to appreciate that my mom was not a memory care patient (who chose to live in memory care with my dad) and expressed her concerns about both of their care. There was a lot of staff gossip. There were no activities for memory care patients. We were shown a schedule which turned out to be what was offered in assisted living. On one occasion when my parents wanted to go to an assisted living music event, they were escorted there only to learn it was canceled. We would not recommend Carmel Village to anyone seeking memory care.

Very happy with our choice
The staff is caring and concerned. They check on her twice a day and call when she is not feeling well. The med tech handles all of her prescriptions and gives them to her as prescribed. She is very happy with the food.

Confidence in Mom's Care
We've been pleased with the facility and the caregiver staff support. My mom unfortunately is now bed bound so unfortunately she's not able to enjoy the beautiful grounds/ courtyard or the regularly scheduled activities and events they hold. Food quality is good with flexibility for time of day to preferred for meals. Med management has been very good. The facility is very good, clean and well maintained for the price we pay but it is an older facility so may not appear a nice and new as other higher priced facilities. All in all I highly recommend Carmel Village

The facility is nice. The food is okay. The staff are very friendly but they are under staffed. My wife is disabled and sometimes she has to wait up to thirty minutes to get help. They Are friendly but need more caregivers, especially during the morning hours.

Memory Care facility needs updates.
Memory care was dated. Air conditioning unit was an issue as my Dad didn't know how to use. The room was hot and stuffy in the afternoon. Staff was good, dealing with difficult combative behavior from my Dad. The entire experience was heartbreaking and the management was not as sympathetic. Hospice team was most helpful.

[name removed] is amazing! Staff was great, clean facilities, fun activities. I would just say, make sure the lead/head of nursing staff meets your resident and make sure all needs are made known. Felt like I did more caregiving after my step-dad moved in. Which is probably common with such a big change.

A comfortable, safe place for your loved one.
My friend [name removed] , who has Alzheimer's, is doing fine at Carmel Village. She's not real happy there, but it has nothing to do with the facility, just the disease. She only wants to live with family or friends. There are 3 of us who visit her every week and have been friends for over 50 years. She appears to be getting good care and she enjoys the meals with the other folks and loves it when there is something musical going on. I've been to a couple of concerts and they were great! The place looks kind of old and dingey (with unattractive artwork!) but clean. She's managing to live on her own, with caregivers giving her meds twice a day.

My 94 year old Mom was resistant to leaving her residence where she had lived by herself for 25 years. We set her up at Carmel Village and she is thriving. She is eating better and getting more exercise. She agrees that this was the right move for her.

I would tell a friend, that it is great. The average age is definitely in the 80's. My father in law was younger but suffering from Parkinson's so he didn't socialize much. The staff is extremely friendly, trustworthy and attentive. He received excellent care which allowed for us to have peace of mind.

our positive experience at Victoria Manner .
She is at Carmel Village in Fountain Valley and loves it. Great overall feeling. They clean her room every week . The common area always nice. Mom loves the staff team. They get her to her appointments... And taken her to ER when needed. Mom has limited taste and a vegetarian. Unfortunately she cannot participate in the activities at this time

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know California’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about California’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

A Place for Mom has scored Carmel Village 9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
