Brookdale West University--Fantastic!
Great location! 4 miles from heart of Medical Center. 3 minute walk to HEB Grocery (a great Grocery store). Dining room here is wonderful. Has a check in button to let office know you are OK or you can call for help with necklace/button. Free laundry's all over. Elevators. 3 floors. Covered parking and gated community with 24/7 security. Vans available to take you to stores, doctor appointments. Beautiful apartments, 1 and 2 bedrooms. Utilities included. Maintenance repair work is fast.

A very nice place to live
It's just like a regular senior apartment except that you have people to help you in your every day living and you don't have to do yardwork or cook or anything like that if you don't want to nurse on staff physical therapy and everything you need just very helpful for me

My experience when I moved into my apartment was wonderful. There were some minor exceptions that were corrected when I brought them to the attention of Brookdale West University staff. However there is still one work order still pending and is the paint in kitchen/dining cabinet sides doesn’t go down to the carpet. Dinning and food services great. Cleaning services are thorough. Front desk services are excellent.

My experience
Meals are ok but I miss having control over salt and sugar intake. The fish is subpar, I only eat it when I arrive at the beginning of the meal, otherwise it is cold and overcooked from sitting in a warmer. Still one of the best points is that HEB is right next door.

I would tell a friend that, my finicky, wishy-washy, persnickety father LOVES the places AND actually eats the food, so it is a WIN/WIN! And that I would recommend it for anyone concerned about having a safe, secure, comfortable, thriving communal senior environment for their aging parent.

Brookdale's Many Benefits
When it comes to value, I would say that if your loved one is someone who takes full advantage of the services Brookdale offers, then it is a great choice. My mom does not take advantage of the exercise classes or the planned trips to local shops like Target and Walmart, outings, even cruises (of course rent doesn't cover cruises, I mean the travel coordination that is done is great). My mom is very much to herself and that is okay, 100%, but she is missing out on things that her money is paying for. Lastly, she also cooks most of her own food because she has to be super careful about gluten. She's very gluten sensitive. So the portion of a resident's rent that covers food is wasted if they do not take full advantage of the food provided. The benefit of being at Brookdale for my mom has been SAFETY. There is a button in the bathroom of each resident and they must press it by a certain time. It alerts the administration that they are safe and frankly, alive. If they do not press it, someone is coming to their unit to check on them. That has really put my mind at ease. Another benefit is that she is surrounded by peers -- people in her same place in life. That is hugely comforting to her. As people age, they unfortunately are maligned by younger folks who don't have a lot of patience with them. So just feels good to live among your peers. The other safety aspect is the limited access to the facility. I don't have a large worry about strangers gaining access and harming her.

I like the people I like the staff like the food like the atmosphere is wonderful place to call home.
The people I deal with the most for the wait staff bussers. I really appreciate that. They are friendly courteous and willing to chat with us about a lot of different things and let us help them do their jobs when they are new. Congrats to the entire staff, or who they managed to hide to do this really important job.

I have been living here for Two years and two months. Have thoroughly enjoyed living here. Regret not moving sooner. I participate in activities here and enjoy the bus trips to restaurants, plays and museums. The food is great. The best part is not having to cook. Quite satisfied with meals and comraderie with other residents. I really enjoy Happy Hour every Wednesday. I love dancing and swaying to the music. I love the drum lessons on Friday. Overall, I am very happy here.

Review for Brookdale West University
Overall I would say if the resident has ANY care needs it is tough there. Geared 100% to independent living only. Lots of hidden fees. Location is outstanding. We would say the person needs to be entirely independent and if that person is showing any signs of debilitating or memory loss they need to go to a community with steps to the community to avoid another BIG move. We picked this community because of the location and the way we were treated when we toured.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale West University 9.7 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
