[date removed] arrived at 3:00 p.m. I fed her lunch was told by [name removed] her dinner will be held for her. Left the facility around 6:00 p.m. around 9:00 p.m. she asked for dinner .. they said kitchen closed .she asked for. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Kitchen closed .. she asked for juice. Kitchen closed she was given a warm bottle of water and that was the end of it. Later a CNA came in and asked her if she had a diaper on she responded no she was asked you need to use the bathroom she said she just went The CNA proceeds to pull down her pants to see if she had a diaper on. Around 2:00 a.m. she pulled the cord looking for a nurse as she was having chest pains. No one came she got out of her bed with her Walker and walked outside the room no one was there. She pulled the court again nobody came she started screaming at the top of her lungs for help screaming help me help me help me someone showed up in half hour to an hour later. None addressed the issue nor notified a RN , which later I found out .. there is only one RN that everyone works under her licence. Therefore as told tow there is 4 Rn in each quad with at least 4 CNAs in each quad. There is NO ONE EVER in my mother's quad as that is the wellness and health director office who is the only RN. She asked if you could take her blood pressure The nurse said why she said this supposed to be taken before you give me my blood pressure medication The nurse refused several times and then eventually did it and the pressure was high. Once again.. no one reported or addressed the issue. I reported this to [name removed], who told me this is a nursing problem and escorted me to the nursing office where I spoke with [name removed]. She promised me it would not happen again and then she would get down to the bottom of it. . Nurse didn't want to take her blood pressure When my mother requested. She said she couldn't find the cup for the blood pressure. When she told her she needs to find it.. The nurse said isn't feeling well. A man came into her room while she was sleeping went through her things peed on the floor and stood over her bed

Nice community with room for improvement
Now that the cleanliness has been addressed it is improving. but improving now that it's been addressed. Compared to other places, I guess the value is good. All of these places are insanely expensive, and none seem to be worth the amount required. I would like to point out that they have a new director and I believe they are having some growing pains. I am hopeful it only goes up from here.

Overall the place has positive energy that our Mother thrives on. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The facility is really nice and we all love the outdoor courtyard. Lots of fun and engaging activities for resident and family. At times, our Mother's room was dirty and family has stepped in to help keep things clean. Sometimes, takes awhile for laundry to get done. Our family that our Mother is happy and thriving at Brookdale

My loved one was previously a resident at Brookdale Virginia Beach and most everything about the facility/experience was great. My only complaint was that their call buttons did not work. Otherwise, everything was great. The staff was wonderful. I would recommend Brookdale Virginia Beach to others.

Not recommended
My loved one was previously a resident at Brookdale Virginia Beach and everything about the experience was terrible. I would rate everything at a zero, if that were an option. There was never any housekeeping. There was no communication with the family, not even when my loved one's blood pressure was high and she was having chest pains, nobody came. Lack of respect. The list goes on and on.

So grateful to find this place for our loved one!!!!
My loved one is currently a resident at Brookdale Virginia Beach. They are well staffed and overall, the facility has a positive energy. The staff are friendly and seem happy working there. The staff has great communication with the family and return calls, emails and texts in a timely manner. We also receive emails about family nights and upcoming monthly and holiday activities at the facility. The place is clean and even the maintenance person was very helpful in getting our loved one's TV set up. We are so grateful to have found Brookdale Virginia Beach. This place has exceeded our expectations!

Glad we found Brookdale
I feel that my loved one is getting great care with the nurses and staff, with kindness and understanding, at Brookdale Virginia Beach. The food is wonderful. I hope that my loved one will join some activities in the future. The physical therapy has been a big help. The whole facility is clean, warm and friendly. I am very happy with this facility. I would recommend Brookdale Virginia Beach to friends and family.

They are always clean when I visit my loved one. The staff are great, welcoming, and have been caring towards my loved one and family. Good vibes of the community
Any small issues, that I had they resolved quickly. My loved one does not complain about the food- the menus look good. I picked this place because of the cost, avalibilty, they had openings, and it's a smaller community. They have lots of trees, and the vibes of the facility is good. It's a nice neighborhood, and the location is great. I would recommend. The rooms are big, and very spacious, which is nice. They are very accomodating, and the communication is good.

I think if a resident is " docile" / compliant then it's a good fit. However, my husband has Lewy Body dementia and I think several staff did not know how to handle him -- it was like pouring gasoline onto a fire. Other staff were very good to him and knew what tone to take and what actions to take or Not. So, despite the mantra of " all staff are trained", the reality is that some staff didn't demonstrate this. I felt like my loved one got labeled and Brookdale let him down. It was not a good fit for him. So, we left after [time frame removed]. He has been in a private home setting since and this is a much better fit for him.

Beware of What They Present in The Beginning
I would elsewhere for a place for your loved one. The cleanliness of my loved one's room has never been kept up and there is a smell to it. I have seen some activities for the residents. There have been personal belongings that have gone missing or stolen from my loved one. There has been one thing after another during our experience at Brookdale. During the tour and it was much better, and since moving my loved one into the community it has gone downhill from what I saw that first day. The Executive Director was changed after the first two days my loved one was in the building.

Take better care
We are moving my loved one due to him falling a few times. They did not have enough people to care for my loved one so this community did not work for us. The staff and some of the nurses were okay and tried to be helpful but we just knew this was not the place for our loved one. We feel like they are understaffed and should have more people, they need help.

Ask lots of questions.
I recommend being a little more upfront than I was regarding what they can physically do for your loved one. For instance, I asked for help for my loved one because he was not walking properly. I asked if they could help him walk, and they said "No, we don't do that here." So If you have the money, I feel like it's worth it to pay more for a facility that has enough staff to better accommodate health needs. I wish I knew that he would not be taken care of on a 1:1 basis as much as I expected, and perhaps I didn't know the right questions to ask before choosing a facility. He has fallen several times, and I think if he had more supervision the situation would have been much better. I like the staff - the nurse, assistant nurse, and the ones who assist my loved one. They're very courteous, and they do a good job of handling him when he gets confused while they're helping him and struggles, thinking they're trying to hurt him. I just wish they were better staffed in the evening. That's when I really worry about him falling.

They're very involved with their residents and do a good job keeping them involved in activities.
The only problem we've had is from day one, we had our loved one's payments set up to be automatically withdrawn form her bank. The month passed, and we were waiting and waiting. Still no withdrawal from her bank account. We called Brookdale, and they said it was all taken care of. It ended up taking two months to get it resolved. And in the meantime we got a nastygram about the overdue account. But that should be all resolved at this point. And accounting /bookkeeping is the only problem we've had. Everything else has been just fine. They seem very involved with their residents. The manager there does a really nice job. And the facility is nicely kept. I haven't seen anything I've been concerned about.

My review of Brookdale Virginia Beach
Our family had an in person tour and our experience was very good. They did have restrictions so while we were there at the community, the sales lady had a nurse go around the community with her phone which was very nice. We were very tempted to put our love done there but in the very end it was covid that messed us up. We felt they became short staffed and we wanted to make sure our loved one was going to find and get the best care. Brookdale is a newer community which was very nice
