Best choice for my mother.
My mother has been at BC for almost four months now and could not be happier. She says she feels like she’s living in a 5 star hotel. All of the staff are not only professional but kind & caring. My mother has been able to maintain her independence but with a sense that there are people around who care & will look out for her should she need some assistance. The dinning assures my siblings & myself that my mom is both getting proper nourishment & ample opportunity to socialize with her peers. Along with the activities available each week. As a member of the medical community I must say I am very impressed with how BC is run. I couldn’t feel better about both where & how my mother is living.

Kind and Caring staff
My mother has been at Bishop Commons for three months. Thus far she has been happier than she’s been for some time. She says she feels like she’s living in a 5 Star Hotel. Constantly commenting on kind and friendly all the staff are and how accommodating the dining staff are. My siblings and I feel very grateful that we found such a professional and well run facility for my mother to live in. Allowing her the feeling of independent living but with the safety net of staff that care and look out for the residents. I woukd encourage anyone to come and look into BC for thier loved ones possible new home.

Uncle enjoys his time at Bishop Commons
My uncle is a very “happy camper” living his life at Bishop Commons. He enjoys his meals in the dinning room with his table mates. He enjoys walking around the facility. There are multiple opportunities to be involved with social activities. The staff is wonderful and extremely supportive. Always available to help or answer any questions we may have. I appreciate all that everyone does for my uncle. It’s comforting to know there are good people watching over him.

Truly a Place for Mom or Dad or Aunt....
I have been blessed with Bishop's Commons since 2012, when my mother moved in. In 2022, my husband and I moved his mother to Bishop's. And, finally, my husband and I moved his Aunt into Bishop's in August 2023. The care and compassion that my mother received at Bishop's surpassed my expectations. My relationship with her was strained; upon her arrival, Bishop's staff became the support she needed and the liaison I needed. It is sometimes difficult for aging parents to admit they need assistance with daily care or a watchful eye; my MIL didn't feel she needed either, but agreed to move closer to us. Soon after moving in, she was told she was legally blind; this hit my MIL very hard. The care and compassion shown by the Case and Nurse Managers, as well as other staff, has made my MIL's transition easier. My Aunt in Law is experiencing feelings of loss and uncertainty; however, the fun, engaging atmosphere from tablemates to activities to staff has eased her feelings.

Mom now calls BC 'her home...'
Last August, Mom moved to Bishop's Commons. Her mobility had declined, but after twenty years of living alone, her independence was stronger than her body's ability to handle, and she was hesitant to enter an assisted living community. That hesitancy lasted a month after she entered BC. Now, on the first anniversary of her move, I have not seen her happier in years. The Bishop's Commons staff was phenomenal in her integration into her new life there, and a year later, she has made friends, not only among her fellow residents, but with her caregivers as well. They care. They visit. They chat. They treat her as family. I live over four hundred miles away, and do my best to visit a couple of days every other month. Before Bishop's Commons, I worried-- and now I that have experienced the level of care -- and let's be honest-- the love for her that ALL to the staff have shown my dear Mum, my fears are allayed, and I see her happy, engaged, and alive. She calls BC 'her Home.' Thank you BC...

This is really home
From the moment Mom walked in the door of her apartment, when she said “This looks like home!”, we knew it was the right place. Mom has made new friends, tried new things (a beer and cider tasting last week, an exercise class), been taken care of by wonderful staff members. If she has any complaints, it is that there is too much food….she put on 2 pounds last month. She gets her hair done weekly at Bishops Common, takes part in church services, enjoys ice cream socials, live music in the dining room. Her life is richer since she moved into Bishop Common.

Excellent & trusting Establishment
In 2018 our Mother had her fist day at Bishops Commons. Her apartment was amazing with a beautiful view of the Oswego River. She absolutely loves it there. They provide so many different activities including exercise & arts & craft & they also provide little outings that they love so much. The food is excellent & you may also enjoy lunch with your loved one by just letting the receptionist know ahead of time & a very reasonable price. The love & care that they receive is amazing. There’s a beautiful patio area that faces the river & also a little putt putt area! They also have a nurse on site & a Dr if needed. They will also provide transportation to & from Dr appointments within Oswego County. I highly recommend Bishops Commons for your loved one(s). I’m so glad we did!

Bishop's Commons Living Experience
My mother has lived at Bishop's Commons for 5 years. She loves it there. The staff there which includes the administration, receptionists, nursing, housekeeping, janitorial, activities, transportation and dining room/kitchen, and probably more, are always ready to explain any and all questions in a timely fashion. Every employee is caring & friendly. I would recommend Bishop's Commons to everyone who is looking for a wonderful place for their loved one.

Mom is Happy & Loves her apartment
1 year ago we had to make a quick move with my Mom. She had fallen at her townhouse & was not comfortable going back there. My daughter suggested Bishop Commons in Oswego. We set up an appointment with [name removed], looked at the rooms that were open, spent time checking the place out. Needless to say it was awesome. Lindsey & other staff members were there on day of move in & were great! We had moved Moms furniture & gotten some new items to set it up. Moms words were It looks like home! She is happy & safe, she participates in the functions she wants to, exercise class, musical programs, "Happy Hour" & truly enjoys the atmosphere. She can't say enough good things about the staff & the dinner service & quality.

Wonderful place
My mom moved to Bishop’s Commons in July after my dad passed away. I found the staff very helpful. It was a difficult adjustment for her after being in her own home for almost 72 years. It gave me tremendous peace of mind knowing she is so well cared for. They take care of her laundry, cleaning, medications, take her to her doctors appointments that are not in house, provide 3 meals a day in a restaurant-style dining hall, and provide activities and supervision as needed. If there are any issues they call me right away so I know what is going on. I cannot say enough wonderful good things about the Commons. The staff is very kind and caring. Nobody wants to leave a long time home but if you do, this is the place to go.

My Dad
Having a parent get old and need assistance is a challenge families face everyday. When my mom passed my dad was heartbroken. His health was on the decline and he could no longer live in his home by himself. How do you convince one they have to leave a home with so many memories? It's not always easy to make big life decisions. My dad put his trust in his daughter in law to deliver, and the team at Bishop Commons was second to none. My dads smile came back. We heard legendary stories of memories shared by old friends/residents around their dinner table. Holidays brought new traditions. Bishop Commons doesn't miss an opportunity to have fun. My dad was big on making his community a better place. Maybe it was time for his community to give back? He became part of the Bishop Commons community/family. In so many ways I believe you get out it what you put into it. Care can be defined by the life one lives.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the New York regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about New York regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Bishop's Commons 9.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
