Not thrilled
My dad was approved for Assisted Living in June and he moved in on [date removed]. At that time, he needed a hoyer lift to get in and out of bed or in and out of his wheelchair. The understanding was that his PT would continue so he could eventually become a one person transfer.
Approximately 90 days later I was told that they wanted to move him to memory care because of his reliance on the hoyer lift. I told the Administrator at Bickford that my dad was making great progress with PT and he was able to stand for at least 60 seconds with the help of his physical therapist. I asked if I needed to supplement his PT with an additional therapist. I was met with resistance.
My dad was on-board with a move to Memory Care based on the fact that he would be able to spend more time in his room. Communication was not great. One nurse told me that it could be a 2-4 week transition because my biggest concern was his possible confusion of being in a new apartment at Bickford.
I received text messages last week on Tuesday from the Administrator that my dad was supposed to have moved the prior weekend. When I asked about his slow movement to Memory Care, I was told that he must be moved immediately. Last Tuesday evening we had to solicit friends to help move my dad. Apparently they had a new resident who was moving in on Wednesday.
By and large, there are caring people who work there. The food is enjoyed by my dad and I know that he is safe there but an unpleasant situation that could have been solved for with better communication would have been appreciated. I also found out that they were double-diapering my dad. I had no idea what that meant but apparently if they double diaper him they change him less frequently. PS. Billing is a nightmare!!

Disappointed
We waited for at least ten minutes to be let in, person we met with was more concerned with me putting down a deposit to secure an apartment instead of Mom's needs. I will be taking Bickford off my list.

Would defiitely recommend
I love the welcoming, warm feeling that a smaller facility like this has to offer. The environment is very homey and warm. It feels very community and family-like. I think they're short-staffed unfortunately, but the workers that they do have work very hard and do their very best. I love the activities, but my dad does not. They're geared more towards women, and it would be nice to see more male-oriented things for him. But the activities director is phenomenal. She is one of the best parts of the place. They do go out once a week for lunch, which is really nice. His apartment is perfectly sized for him and is handicapped accessible. The director went above and beyond to help me get my dad in there and take that step. And she provides a lot of personalized attention. We really like Bickford.

A good facility for the cost.
Overall we've been pretty pleased. The only downside seems to be on the weekends when they are a little bit less fully staffed and wait times are longer for assistance. I know most places are struggling with staffing now due to the pandemic. So it might be a better place for people who are more ambulatory. Also because of staffing, there don't seem to be structured activities on the weekends outside of mealtimes. But during the week, the activities are good. They try to get the residents to socialize as much as possible. They don't appear to really allow the residents to just sit in their rooms. They do try to draw people out as much as they can, as much as the resident is willing. They do a very good job keeping the facility looking clean and nice as well. It's only a few years old, and really well designed and nicely laid out.

Lovely facility, rooms were beautiful. The Alzheimer’s unit was nice but there were only 4 residents so it seemed very quiet. I am removing my mother from a place that has very low census and no activities at all, not sure I can take a chance on another place with low # of residents and staff.

I recently moved my mom from here. We love the CNA’s and the staff. The Bickford corporate staffing and practices do allow for best care for the resident. They manage pennies not people. Wish the best.

Amazing CNAs, Terrible Management
My grandmother is a resident here, and the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the amazing CNA’s here. While Bickford is a gorgeous facility and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the CNA’s, something absolutely needs to change with leadership/management here. The turnover of staff is so high that the CNA’s are expected to perform not only their job description, but also pick up the slack from being so understaffed that they’re expected to cook in the kitchen, clean the cafeteria/eating area and do residents laundry. My Aunt takes all of my grandma’s clothes with her weekly and washes them at home to alleviate some of the stress on the CNA’s and because we can’t trust that it’s going to get done. Not to mention their washers are often broken for extended periods of time. We have seen so many good CNAs and cooks come and go because of the amount of work that’s required of them. It’s especially difficult for the residents that have memory loss because they will finally get used to a staff member only for them to resign a short while later. It’s a total revolving door and it stresses the residents and their family members out. Understaffing has also lead to multiple residents walking right out the front door without notice, which is very scary for being on busy a busy intersection of Hunt Club and Gages Road. When family members sat down with management (including the District Manager) to voice concerns and ask what was going to be done, family members were given typical corporate blanket statements with no real sense of urgency or care. It comes off as though all they care about is the money and cutting expenses (staff) to increase their profit, even if it’s at the expense of their residents. For what we pay monthly at Bickford (which is a VERY pretty penny), we will be looking for another establishment for my grandmother if management doesn’t make changes soon. This area has plenty of nice assisted living facilities to choose from and we’d gladly give our money to one who cares more about the wellbeing and care of not only their residents, but their staff as well, rather than greed. Bickford has huge potential to be run the right way and be a wonderful facility for residents, but even the nicest facility with beautiful esthetics can’t outweigh or hide the real issues that are happening.
