Our families experience
Some of the issues we experienced were with staffing. They didn't have enough help to keep things going some days. My dad passed away last month and their nursing staff was extremely helpful for a few days there. My dad did complain about the food at times as well.

Disappointed, do not recommend
The facility is in need of repairs and renovation. It use to be a beautiful facility that treated residents like family. Unfortunately, like so many other senior living options, it's corporate owned. There is less focus on the residents and more focus on profit. Some of the staff are outstanding. Due to a revolving door of management and lack of appreciation, the good people do not stay.
We have a lot of family so Mom was well cared for by us and we advocated politely for her and the other residents. When we didn't see appropriate change, we moved her.

lack of communication from onsite and corporate levels
The lack of communication from the onsite team and corporate office has been unlike anything I have experienced from another organization. Our onsite experience was short as the facility was used for a 30 day respite stay. Three of the four weeks of our loved one's stay, she did not receive the care we agreed upon and paid for. Since the time of her departure, we have spent 3 months trying to find a positive and reasonable solution for our experience with both the community and corporate office. Calls and emails have gone unanswered. Still trying to work thru this issue.

It's a nice place, we are on the 4th manager since I moved in. The staff is a mixture of good and so so. The housekeeping works hard, but they are made to help out on other things. Communication with the family is okay. Some of the food is good, and some not. I think they are trying to improve. I would recommend this facility to others.

Review for Bickford of Bloomington
My mom has been there a few months (independent living), and so far, the experience has been really good. The apartments are incredibly well laid out and clean. Mom really enjoys the food, activities, and loves the weekly cleaning. The facilities are very nice - beautiful building and grounds - and the place seems very well kept. Staff has been very friendly and seem to be helpful. I've had limited interaction with most because I'm there several nights a week and weekends when it's not as heavily staffed but residents seem well cared for, staff is always very nice, and mom seems fond of them. Based on my experience this far, I would definitely recommend Bickford to others.

Not recommended
I was told, when looking for a place, that Bickford was a skilled nursing facility. They are not. They are charging us a level 5 and we are not getting the care of that level. There is no communication with us, unless we call for a meeting. The move in process was rough. We were told we were getting a "new" apartment, but there was no paint and no new carpet. The meals are adequate. My loved one is very picky and they try hard to get her something she likes. They need more workers. And ones that care about people. They have one nurse who is the best and one CNA that is great. Others are off the street with no training. They have one maintenance worker who can't possibly keep up with things. We can't move because no other place has apartments. The housekeeping is below acceptable. I would not recommend this facility under present management and staff.

An amazing tour
Very beautiful building and the ambiance was so warm and inviting. The staff was very welcoming and I did not wait long at all to meet with [name removed], the person that was doing my tour. Everything was well explained to me and I left knowing that I made a good decision to place my mom on their memory care unit. I feel as though she will be in good hands. The activities seemed fun and exciting and the staff really paid attention to the residents. I am thankful that Bickford of Bloomington was there to carry my mom on her second journey in her life.

The staff at Bickford house I would 99% of the time try to make sure you have everything you need as much as they are able. If you talk to any one person, that person makes it their job to follow thru and make sure you get what you are in need of. Highest of ratings to the staff at Bickford. They give their best and honestly care about the people they care for. They treat us like family. The cleaning of the building is well done and kept up as well as holidays decorated and cheerfulness for all worked at. We had a bit of worker shortage during the holidays, but the ones who were here gave their all to keep our meals served, our needs met and the unit cleaned and organized. I can't say enough good about the chef(food is yummy and if you don't like his menu, he will make you something else.) The same goes for our amazing maintenance man who willingly gives up his days off to handle situations that come up in any home or apartment. He not only fixes what needs fixing, he goes above and beyond in helping you with your needs he is not responsible for. He brought my groceries in for me once and put my water on top of my fridge, which
would have been next to impossible for me and he just did it and kept going to his next job. Communication with my family has been excellent. They always take the calls and answer my family's concerns so they feel comfortable with me being here. I highly recommend living here. They are working on staff training and improvement and have a monthly meeting to hear the residents' concerns, interests and needs. That is especially high on my like list. I had one issue that I had a major problem with and after speaking up about it, it was corrected within 24 hours. I was highly impressed. Bickford, like any organization, is a constantly changing, adding new ideas, answering residents concerns and trying to give the residents here the best life they can have. My health has improved in all areas since my move here and I'm hoping it keeps up that way.
I recommend Bickford for apartment living with help as you need it.

Do not recommend
They were very short staffed. They were not patient with my loved one. She was there for just 12 days and they would miss taking her to meals, they never bathed her or assisted her. They never answered the call button to assist her to the restroom so she sat in urine for hours. She was supposed to stay for 30 days but I took her out early. I have been trying to call them for a month now and I have even stopped in and no one will talk to me to give me a refund. They told me they could handle her care when they came to assess her, but clearly that was not true. I think they just wanted the money. Overall it was a terrible experience and I do not recommend them.

I was not impressed wit h this community. I felt nickled and dimed for everything that was needed. I also did not like the way that they set up the medicine and the way that it was handed out. The tour was great just not a great fit for my loved one. They did a great job with the tour.

Receptionist to answer phone
My mom is a resident in your memory care facility.
When trying to call to get information on how she is doing, there is no one to answer the phone. Have called 3 and 4 times and let the phone ring 20 times each time and finally someone will answer .
Some of the people that do answer don’t know how to use the phone to transfer you to memory care.
I strongly suggest you get a full time receptionist, and or a direct line to memory care!
This is very aggravating!
Please consider this, at the cost we pay we should be able to get a call through!

I think they are friendly and competitive in their pricing. They are trying to improve. Overall I would recommend them to a friend. The food is okay. The room sizes and layout of the community are good. They have outdoor space for the residents to use.

Amazing Staff
I have never been so happy with a place in my life. Bickford was not initially my first choice. Bickford has been so helpful through the whole 9 month process of moving my mom from a rehab out of state. They have been like a second family to my mom. Just like everyone she is having a hard time with the quarantine but the staff is helpful, I have been able to surprise her at her window twice. The staff at Bickford has been amazing over all.

I find the people working there are compassionate. She stays in the dementia care facility. It is small part of the facility. So there is more one on one interaction. She is well cared for. The quality of the food is high quality and full of protein.
The place is well kept and clean. I'm glad I decided on this facility for her. The place is close to my home.
They keep me informed of anything that happens to her, mom forgets she can't walk so she falls.
It is a relief to me that I don't have to worry over her.
I've visited other places in town and they have a lot of people, patients, some of them are fighters and my mom is defenseless. I wasn't going to put her into that.
I get to fill an assessment of the facility. I also write down instructions for the staff in case there are things to better her situation.
I do have to pay for all of her supplies. It is not included in the price of monthly payment for her stay.

Bickford feels a little older than the other shiny new ones I visited, but that is because they are 17 years old and that is actually good as my dad would probably feel more at home there. They had all the amenities. I really liked the staff I met and several of them talked to me. From what I gleaned from caregivers, they really care about the patients as individuals. From my tour point of view, so far they feel like their level of care and what they provide seems high quality (best so far I have seen). I liked that the center was locked down and residents cannot wander. Enrichment and partnership with college seemed really good. Price was highest though and I need to better understand true costs and how prices may go up with levels of care and memory care.

I toured this community
I went on a tour here and the staff was nice. The community was nice too. They answered all of my questions. It was only about 15 years old and there has been no updates and the carpet is worn out. It was clean and kept up it just wasn't a good fit for my friends.

Moms New Home
I placed my mom in this community that is within 3 miles of my home so I am thrilled she is this close. The staff has a high turnover so I worry a little about that but they are responsive. They have good food, and keep the place really clean. Mom enjoys to play bingo and she goes to exercise daily. And the garden area is nice. I also chose this place for the 24hr nursing care.
