A Nice Place
Everyone At Bethany Retirement seems friendly and helpful. The room size and layout of the community is good. My likes the food. They have an outdoor courtyard for residents to use. My mom is happy there.

My Tour Experience at Bethany Retirement Community
Bethany likewise was more of a retirement community. Unfortunately the staff did not seem well prepared for our visit and information was somewhat lacking. The facility seemed nice.

Great, Walkable Neighborhood, Great, Caring Staff...The Food Meh
My loved one was here during COVID. They have a great location and neighborhood. The health and wellness director was wonderful to work with. The was a company that took over and is cheeping out of the food. They really care about the residents. There is transportation for the residents to utilize and the driver is very nice to work with. All the staff are very caring towards the residents and families. They allowed pets. Loved the Yappy Hour!!! This allowed the residents to interact with families to be able to bring their dogs in to socialize with the residents. They even had cocktails available for the residents.

Excellent Location
They have new owners. The place is nice. The environment is nice. But it needs some updating. The new administration does not help the residents. The activities are not for independent living. It is a transition right now. They have some remodeling planned. It is an excellent location. They do have transportation.

Great location, good size rooms, kind staff, icky food.
When the new management took over the food quality went down. The staffing went down as well when the the management changed. Rooms are good size. They have a good value for the neighborhood they are in and what you get for the money. The wellness/ activities director is doing the best she can with the Covid-19 virus. They are doing the best they can.The administrator has never returned my calls. They are not great with communication around working people hours.

Good activities
Good social programs with several activities and outings- definitely the highlight. Residents complain about food (processed/pre made.) but this is improving gradually. Residents are nice and tend to welcome diversity. Nice facility. Look for increases in rent/care costs over your original quote. Our fees increased nearly 50% over the first two years.

Hello and thank you so much for the great comments about our activities and the community!..Regarding increases: Our rent increases are competitive with other communities in the area...in fact they are lower...right now the increases are at 4% annually. Please see the administrative office so we can take a look to make sure all is correct. Rents/Fees should not increase by 50% over two years....Thanks so much.

Our tour was great. [name removed] was a good tour guide. We love the free parking for residents and visitors. You can walk from the parking lot to the Center while being inside for most of the walk by cutting through the Hospital and though a connecting walkway. It had nice classy remodeling. They are home to a variety of faiths. You can transition to Assisted living with out having to make a move to another location. Typical city views. We did decide on a place by the lake. A Place For Mom Senior Living Advisor [name removed] is a gem and so very awesome. I am so glad she helped us out so comprehensively.

Good community for my dad
I moved our father in about 5 months ago. He likes the food a lot and the variety they have. We both think the staff are respectful, caring and really try to meet my fathers needs where needed. My father needs a little bit of support with his memory. He currently really likes the memory care staff and classes he takes. I like how Bethany offers a variety of activities for the residents. The staff are diverse. One thing that would be good to offer are excercise classes. And Overall it’s hard to find a place with residents of diverse backgrounds. But overall my father feels really good about Bethany.

Great Active Community!!!
I have been a resident here for almost a month. I moved here because a neighbor of mine moved here and said great things about it. There are so many things to do! It would be hard to just sit in your apartment....nor would you want to. There are plenty of activities and outings and the staff and residents are wonderful and fun. The food is delicious and the gardens are beautiful! I would encourage everyone to give Bethany Retirement Community a try!

A community for care
We toured this community. We did visit and were going to move in, but there were some changes. The community is clean and maintained. The staff is so attentive and caring. They offer a nice variety of meals that are offered and a variety. They offer a lot of nice activities that would be nice if she is able to move in later on. We would recommend this community for the nice care and a good value for others.

Great Floor Plan!!
I really liked the floor plan at this community. Everything was very open with lots of bright natural light throughout the building. A Newby's View
Bethany is one-half to one-third the cost of other places I learned of in Chicago so had to be my choice unless it were really awful. I chose on the basis of price and my son's viewing, as I was many states away and unable to visit. All things considered, I would have made the same decision though, in fair disclosure, I have not seen any other facility. Pro's: happy people, happy staff who seem to want to please, a hospital that is, literally, attached, some much appreciated green space in the city. Con's: lousy food (it is prepared by the hospital kitchen), limitations of a 1953 building, though well maintained. I cannot speak to care services but there are lots of nursing staff and many students supplementing them and the social worker. Worth your consideration.

Hi Joann - Thank you so much for taking the time to write about some wonderful reasons you enjoy Bethany Retirement! It's always nice to hear positive comments! Regarding food: it seems food is always the much talked about item in retirement communities. I am so sorry you are not enjoying all of your meals. I can suggest you join our "food committee" as we are always looking for ways to improve meals and please our residents. Thank you again and we absolutely love having you as a resident here at Bethany Retirement!

Nothing spectacular about it!
The community was very quiet and seemed to have a lack of energy. This community may be the right fit for less active residents. The dining room was like a schools cafeteria with nothing great about it. They had different layouts for the rooms but they were not as updated as we would like. The layout of the community had long hallways which could make it hard to get around the community.

Hello and thank you for your comments regarding our community. I'm truly disappointed you do not see what others see in Bethany Retirement Community. Perhaps you came in the morning time when residents were at breakfast or there was not an activity. Our community is a 55 and older community and is indeed very active. Our residents go on outings weekly and there are five exercise classes weekly also. Please visit our website to check out our "Activity Calendar". Our hallways are very bright and long and our active residents love the fact they can get exercise just by walking our hallways. Please let me know if you'd like to reschedule a time to come back and take another look. :)

A Non-Resident View of Bethany Retirement Community
The environment is not hectic. There is a quietness that may be especially facilitating for retirees who've had multiple years of deadlines to meet at work and bills to pay at home. The first floor has a spacious seating area along with a piano (that really works --- not just a show piece). A water fountain is not far from the piano. It may add a welcome quietude and gentleness to your spirit. Be sure to have a seat or take a leisurely walk in the outdoor garden. There are medical personnel in the building to assist the residents and a hospital is very close by. Security personnel are on duty 24/7. Do make BRC a must see in your search for a congenial retirement community.

Hello - Thank you so much for your wonderful review about Bethany Retirement Community! Not many people take the time to say the good things, and we really appreciate your comments. Being a not-for-profit, we are currently in the process of a fundraiser to help renovate our community. We've made many changes already! Most of the resident apartments have been newly updated. Overall it is an okay place
I think that they are very friendly and caring at Bethany Retirement Community. The communication is hard there. I'm not sure who is in charge or who the go to for a service request. The care service need improving but they are working on it. The services offered are also confusing to me. I would like more of explanation on everything. Overall it is an okay place but I get the feeling there is probably some place better.

Hi and thank you for your comment about our community. I'm sorry you feel a bit confused about our communication and services. Upon move in, we explain and go over the Resident Handbook with residents and family members who are interested, which talks about service requests. Service requests go through the front desk. If you would like these things explained to you, feel free to speaking with anyone in the Administration office on the first floor. Thank you again for your comments. Our goal is to keep our residents and family members pleased with our community and its services.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Illinois regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Illinois regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Andersonville Supportive Living 3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
