How people pay for assisted living in Marietta

This guide will walk you through how to pay for assisted living in Marietta, Georgia. You will find information about private pay options, VA benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare. You will also find a list of resources for each mentioned payment method.

Private pay methods

For those who are able, private pay is a great way to pay for the cost of assisted living. Private pay options include any form of income that a person has accumulated throughout their life. Examples of private pay methods are pensions, retirement savings, Social Security benefits, investments, or inheritance. You can also use any of the methods listed below:

VA benefits
2554

Number of veterans who live in Marietta

Percentage of Marietta veterans are 75+

Veterans in Marietta can use benefits to help offset the cost of living in assisted living communities and/or the in-home care needed while in assisted living communities. Specifically, veterans should look into the VA Aid and Attendance benefit (A&A). This benefit is specifically for those who need help with daily activities such as showering, dressing, feeding, or other daily activities. The additional payment is disbursed alongside the VA Pension and can be used for all health-related and living expenses to enhance one’s quality of life.

These benefits are helpful, but the application process can be complicated. Marietta veterans can access resources to help guide them through the application process and then get connected to these benefits. Those who need help with the application process can seek out a veterans services officer. You can contact these trained experts through the VA office or at veterans services organizations (VSOs), such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars or American Legion.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a state-run health care program known in Georgia as the Peach State Health Plan. Those looking to move into an assisted living facility in Marietta can use Medicaid to cover in-home care but not the custodial costs of long-term care such as rent. Eligibility for Medicaid can be found online.

A waiver system known as the home and community based services (HCBS) waiver program can be helpful in offsetting certain costs of assisted living, such as in-home health care, for those who are eligible. Seniors in Marietta will want to look specifically into the Georgia Elderly and Disabled waiver.

Use the Georgia Gateway website to apply or check for eligibility. The application process for the Peach State Health Plan is lengthy and complex. Because of this, seniors in Marietta will want to use available resources to help guide them through the process.

For your primary point of reference, consider the Georgia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Ombudsmen have ample experience in navigating the application process and can provide you with a practical assessment of eligibility, assist you throughout the application process, and facilitate access to benefits. In addition, seniors can seek further information by reaching out to the Cobb County Division of Family and Child Services (the primary Medicaid office for Cobb County) or contacting Empowerline.

Medicare

Medicare is a federally run health care program that can help seniors cover some of the costs of necessary in-home medical care while in assisted living. It must be pointed out that Medicare will not cover the cost of living, only medical care. If you or a loved one wants to apply for Medicare, do so online or in person at the Social Security Administration.

There are a number of Medicare Savings Programs available for Marietta seniors who qualify that can help pay for some or all of the Medicare copayments and deductibles.

The application process for Medicare can be complicated, so it is recommended that those looking to apply reach out to one of the several resources available to them in Marietta.

Notably, the local long-term care ombudsman has plenty of experience with the application process. They can help you determine if you are eligible for Medicare. If you qualify, they will help you through the application process and if accepted, will help connect you with benefits that can help cover the costs associated with necessary in-home medical care in an assisted living facility.

The State Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is another great resource for seniors. Run through the Peach State Health Plan (Georgia Medicaid), SHIP sets up one-on-one consultations with advisors who can help seniors with the Medicare application process.

Marietta seniors will also find resources at the local Social Security Administration office or by contacting Empowerline to connect with resources and answer any questions.

Understand Georgia laws and regulations for assisted living facilities

Assisted living facilities are required under Georgia law to be licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Healthcare Facility Regulation Division (HFRD) as an assisted living community or a personal care home. The primary difference between the two designations is how many residents they may service. An assisted living community is for 25 or more residents.

The HFRD regularly checks that all assisted living communities follow strict rules and regulations, including community safety guidelines, emergency preparedness, applicant admission evaluations, and much more. If you are interested in the results of inspections, you can find them for specific facilities online.

There are specific staffing requirements for assisted living facilities in Georgia. It is required that there is at least one awake staff member for every 15 residents of a Georgia assisted living facility. No one under the age of 18 is permitted to work in an assisted living facility, and the manager of an assisted living facility must be at least 21 years of age. It is mandatory that all staff members receive training in first aid, CPR, residents’ rights, medical and social needs, and other duties within their first 60 days of working in an assisted living facility.

As it pertains to residents, all assisted living facilities must come up with a plan of care for residents within 14 days of a resident moving in. At this time, the staff responsible for overseeing the care plan will be identified. The care plan will include social and medical needs, plus any other services required to take care of that resident. Doctor’s orders are included in these care plans, such as specific instructions as to how to deal with specific behaviors.

All assisted living facilities in Marietta are required by law to offer activities that promote the social, physical, and mental well-being of the residents.
