Good company
Home Care Advocacy is a good company. The caregivers and the administration were good. They worked with us on finding what worked best for us and accommodated every change we needed or made. A few times there was miscommunication but was worked out almost immediately. A few times the workers were late, but always stayed later if that was the case. We had one problem with a caregiver and it was taken care of swiftly and we were happy with the outcome. The ladies we had in our home were absolutely wonderful to my grandmother who is suffering from dementia. They became almost like family in the short amount of time we had them. The only thing I wish was, we would get a printed weekly breakdown of costs. We wanted to verify times and work schedules.

Very flexible and responsive
When we started this journey to provide support for my mother-in-law, we did not know how much time we would need each week. We’ve had great help in starting very slow and increasing the hours every week to continue supporting her. [name removed] has also been very responsive to our initial questions and then schedule changes later on.

Quality care
Started using agency in July. Only issue has been turnover in caregivers. Three caregivers in first ninety days. All have performed well, and agency communicates changes well, but would like more consistency. Agency has provided two contacts to discuss issues if they arise so communications are good.

Needs improvements.
Some experiences were excellent. Others were not acceptable. They could improve their reliability and skill levels.

Safety + Peace of Mind = Companionship Care
I believe there should be continual training to improve care for clients with dementia. If I (as a lay person) can learn how to maintain individual dignity and enhance [name removed] quality of life, I believe your clientele would benefit from that as well through your companionship care providers. At times there is a shift change during [name removed] care for which there is an overlap of fees. Less shift change, the better - especially for dementia patients. There is no open communication with the Aides. By the time I get their journals, they are 2 weeks out. So if there are issues, time has passed before I even knew there was an issue.) Some journals are too redundant, others are too vague. Some tasks are being completed that are not applicable (ie In the most recent journal entry "Clean or change litter box" is marked as "completed" but the cat died 4 months ago! How many other tasks are being misrepresented?) I realize that [name removed] is very low maintenance and has very few interests or hobbies but the aides could afford to be more intentional in providing new activities that would be more engaging. [name removed] does not like to color but they have her coloring most every day.) They should be willing to learn new games and invest quality time and more interactive conversation. I can't express how grateful I am to have peace of mind knowing that [name removed] is safe in her home. My life is such that I cannot be there for her 24/7 so HCAN is truly a godsend by meeting [name removed] wishes to stay in her home!

Frequently Asked Questions
about HomeCare Advocacy Network of Des Moines

A Place for Mom has scored HomeCare Advocacy Network of Des Moines 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
