We developed a proprietary recommendation system that orders Georgetown community options based on factors we know are important to seniors and their families:
We collect proprietary data from our network of 14,000+ senior living communities in the U.S., with regular refreshes of data and information
We have 387,000+ reviews from senior living residents and family members that provide first-hand accounts about senior living communities
Senior apartments in Georgetown tend to average around $1,800 per month, but you can pay anywhere from $1,195 to $3,997, depending on what you choose.[01] The price will vary based on the complex, the number of bedrooms you want, and if you have a pet. Generally, there is an additional fee for a dog or cat.
Below, we’ve provided a chart that shows the baseline costs in the Georgetown area without taking into consideration any additional fees that might be charged.
Making a monthly payment to a senior apartment complex is generally done out of pocket. There are benefits that can offset the cost, however, be it directly or indirectly. In this section, we will discuss how VA benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and public assistance may be able to help make room in the budget for rent.
Paying the rent at your senior apartment is something you’ll generally do with what’s considered a private method of payment. That can mean anything from Social Security benefits and pensions to investment returns or private savings accounts. The following are other private options to consider:
Number of veterans who live in Georgetown
About 67% of Georgetown veterans are 65+
With well over half of Georgetown’s veterans at retirement age, many are considering benefits that can help them with the cost of senior living. The VA Pension is one such benefit that can help senior veterans who qualify. Another one that might help is the Aid and Attendance, which is paid in addition to the VA Pension. The Aid and Attendance is for veterans who need help with daily activities, have poor eyesight, are in a nursing home, or must stay in bed much of the day.
Accessing the benefits or figuring out if you are eligible for these or other options isn’t an easy task. There are plenty of ways to get help with the process. Georgetown has veterans service officers who are experts in doing just that. These officers can be found at the Williamson County Veterans Services Office or through veterans service organizations, such as the American Legion.
It’s worth connecting with these guides to make sure you don’t leave any possible benefits on the table.

In Texas, Medicaid is health insurance for low-income seniors. While it doesn’t cover the rent of a senior apartment, it can help if a doctor says you need in-home health care services. In that case, a home and community based services waiver can provide coverage for you to receive that care in your senior apartment.
You can apply for Medicaid online. Texas also offers Medicaid for the Elderly and People with Disabilities (MEPD). This is available for some low-income seniors who are already on Medicare. You can apply for this on the Your Texas Benefits portal as well.
Additionally, Texas has a Health Insurance Premium Payment Program (HIPP) that will cover the premium for employer-sponsored health insurance in a household where one person in the family is on Medicaid. You can apply for HIPP online.
If you need help navigating all this, the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area operates the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Both of these are good resources to reach out to for help.
Called the “Pink Book,” this Texas Medicaid Reference Guide provides in-depth information on the program if you want to do a deeper dive.

Medicare — the health insurance for those 65+ — doesn’t cover senior apartment rent, but it could help with medically necessary in-home care for short-term medical needs. This online list goes into detail about your Medicare coverage for specific items.
Medicare Savings Programs can offset additional costs by covering part or all of the Medicare premiums or copayments. Texas also offers a low-income subsidy called Extra Help that gives low-income seniors additional assistance with paying for prescription drugs.
Texas provides a free Medicare Helpline for you to call and get help with the process of understanding and applying for Medicare. This is part of the Texas Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), which offers free counseling about your Medicare options and can help you enroll. You can also reach out to the Williamson County long-term care ombudsman housed at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area.
You can apply for Medicare online or by downloading and printing out enrollment forms to take to your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Choice Voucher Program is one of the primary ways to receive public assistance with the cost of a senior apartment. However, you do have to make sure the landlord accepts the vouchers before being able to use them. It’s also worth noting that Georgetown has a waiting list for this program that is currently full; keep checking with the Housing Authority of the City of Georgetown for updates on that status.
Social Security benefits are another way to get help paying for senior housing. Here are some programs that you might qualify for:
For disability advocacy, you can reach out to the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities based in Austin or the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area.

There are no licensing requirements for senior apartment complexes in Texas because they do not provide care of any type. However, they are still governed by federal and state laws that protect residents of rental properties.
Some of the important laws and regulations that apply include:
In Texas, this state Property Code discusses both the landlord’s and tenant’s rights and responsibilities around everything from leases and rent payments to security deposits and repairs. On a scale of 100, Walk Score only gives Georgetown a 23 for being pedestrian-friendly and a bike score of 35, which means the city has some bike lanes but not a lot.[04] Walk Score is an organization that grades the walkability of addresses across the country.
If you don’t have a car of your own or don’t want to drive, CARTS has 60 buses and vans that run on fixed routes throughout Central Texas. All buses are equipped with bike racks and are wheelchair accessible. Seniors who are at least 65 and people with disabilities get half-price fares, and that includes the $88 monthly pass for just $44, or if you want to pay per ride, it’s just a dollar one way.
Georgetown’s limited paratransit service, GoGeo, is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you are 65+, you can skip the eligibility process and sign up with a quick phone call to 512-478-RIDE. If you’re not yet 65, you can fill out a paper application to apply.
Another way to get a ride is through Faith in Action’s Driving Seniors program. This nonprofit organization has volunteer drivers providing free rides for seniors to get to medical appointments or run errands. The volunteers offer door-to-door service, but since they’re using personal vehicles, wheelchairs can’t be accommodated.
