Disappointed
The staff of aides were amazing. They showed genuine interest in their residents and had good communication with me. Activities were minimal and were not interesting, ie, coloring. The food was catered but tasteless. The room size was ok, but when seniors move from a house with a nice size bedroom, moving into a much smaller room that only has a small table, one chair and a nightstand, is hard to adjust to. My dad felt cramped and he really felt the loss of independence because there was no bathroom in his room. The major concern I had was staffing shortages. One Sunday afternoon my dad fell on the floor. At that time, he had a call bell around his neck, so he rang the bell several times. I got there and got him up from the floor and I asked him how long had he been on the floor and he said at least 20 minutes. I asked him to ring the bell again and it was another 25 minutes before anyone responded. I had a word with the staff and they apologized but said they were short staffed. Then, their internal communication was not good. My dad had 2 doctor appointments that staff were to transport him to, and due to failed effective communication, my dad didn't make it to either appointment and I drove an hour to meet him there both times. Neither times did the staff reach out to me and let me know that my dad wasn't going to his appointments. Then, with regard to the director, I paid her a visit because my dad had specific things that were to be in place (a back brace and PT) upon his release from the hospital after one of his injuries due to his MANY falls in his room, that were not in place. The director claimed that there were no instructions sent with his release papers that required care or any equipment. I told him that I met with the hospital case manager who contacted one of her staff prior to his release, to be certain that they would provide assistance to my dad in getting his back brace put on and helped to a chair. They told the staff that he would be returning with the brace and that they had already arranged for PT, the days and times. But the director stilled claimed to be unaware of any of what I was telling her. I asked her to access whatever discharge papers she had, and there it was, everything I had told her was outlined in his discharge paperwork. I was livid!!! His back brace was in his room under a table and nobody had put it on for 2 days. PT had been there, and were frustrated that he wasn't wearing the brace or sitting up in his chair as noted in his release paperwork. When my dad passed, he was wearing his glasses. We got the call just before 7 AM, and that lead us to believe that nobody checked on him through the night because he didn't sleep in his glasses. A week or so earlier, hospice had been called in and just days before his passing he wasn’t coherent enough to understand anything that was on tv.... I was convinced that the staff didn't check in on him because they knew someone from hospice care had been there for a few hours, so they just never checked in him until the morning staff came in.

Top notch
Tree of Life was always spotlessly clean. There were many activities for residents. Food appeared to be of excellent quality. On my visits, I never heard a complaint from any resident. [name removed] seemed to be very satisfied and was able to visit his Stewartstown home when he wished. His relatives in NC were very pleased with the pictures we sent to them of the facility.

Not the experience we expected
Overall, most of the staff were very attentive. However, there were several times when there was a shortage of staff and incidents that occurred that were not reported to family. My father had several falls, some which were not reported and our family believes that the number of serious falls contributed to his passing. We knew his death was inevitable, but certainly not as soon as it occurred.

Thank you for your review. I'm so sorry your experience was not what you expected. We do our very best to provide top notch care to those entrusted to us, and it's unfortunate that we do experience losses from time to time given the age group and many health conditions that our residents experience. We are saddened when that happens but please know that our staff is caring and attentive and do what we can to provide the best care for every resident in our care. Thank you again and please accept our deepest condolences.

While I am fairly independent here the staff are fabulous. Each is patient and gently redirects confused residents. I enjoy the food realizing there are many tastes to satisfy. Some residents are difficult but I migrate to positive residents.

A Place for Mom has scored Tree of Life Personal Care Home 9.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.   We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.   Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
