When my wife and I met [name removed] and her incredible team, they made the process really simple and inviting. We were looking for choices for my grandparents. My grandparents are blooming at Lantern, and I count myself quite blessed to have found it.

About the facility
Lantern of Saybrook

Lantern of Saybrook is an assisted living and memory care senior community that offers adult day care and respite care. The community's mission is to facilitate healthy aging by providing a great senior living experience. With carefully planned layouts, activities, and programs, seniors can get comfortable and stay active and social. Lantern of Saybrook is located along Highway 20, allowing quick access to nearby medical facilities and pharmacies. There are also shopping centers and  supermarkets like Wal-Mart and more nearby for any other shopping needs.

Located on Lake Erie’s coastline, the community of Ashtabula, Ohio, pronounced “Hush-tah-buh-lah,” is a small community that offers unique and historical in-town attractions like The Brant’s Apple Orchard, Walnut Beach, or Cloven Hoof Brewing. Ashtabula also offers easy access to travel destinations like New York City or Toronto, Canada.

At Lantern of Saybrook, seniors have access to the community's signature program, Fountain of Life. The program has two facets: Brain Power for physical activities and daily assisted living assistance and Svayus for memory care therapies and assistance. Both programs aim to promote cognitive, physical, mental, and emotional strength. Lantern at Saybrook also plans activities designed to enrich the lives of seniors, provides scheduled transportation, housekeeping, and more.

Assured senior care for your loved one
Amazing culture; everyone we met who was a member of Mom's care team was wonderfully pleasant and caring. The programs are fantastic at keeping people interested and giving them the sense of purpose that they deserve. I can rest well knowing that there are individuals that go above and beyond to make her and the other residents feel wonderful!!

Best care facility for your loved one
I can't say enough positive things about this facility. I looked all around for the ideal location to take care of my mother-in-law, and this is it. The facility is spotless, and [name removed] and his staff go above and beyond. The food is excellent, and the many events keep everyone in the community happy and engaged!

Wonderful facility
For the past eight months, both of my parents have been residing at The Lantern. The entire staff has treated them with the utmost respect and concern since the day they came in. The facility is kept very clean, provides excellent food and activities, and is far superior to my expectations. They take excellent care of my parents.

Down to earth and Friendly
My mother has been at Lantern for about 6 weeks now. We received day-by-day update calls for 2-three weeks from [name removed]. The information of the team of workers and nursing personnel reassures us that she’s in first-rate hands. We are pleased with our preference at Lantern!

Wonderful service by Lantern of Saybrook team
I can't say enough positive things about Lantern. My grandmother was treated with compassion and care by every single member of the staff. Would not recommend
Would not recommend this community !! You might want to think twice about putting your loved one here, has all the bells and whistles but the care is subpar at best!!. My mother was there for a little over a year Laundry was an issue the whole time she was there. Found pills on the floor on several occasions . Dining area was always fiflthy. Were not let out outside as often as they should be no lawn furniture . Activities pretty much non existent.High turnover rate with employees.when my moms head was split open requiring three staples she was not transported by ambulance , company vehicle and aid took her. There is so much more I could say but the most important thing is you don’t always get what you are sold so make sure you do your homework!! I’ve since moved my mom and she is doing wonderful has been out more in a months time than she was in a year.

I think it is a great place, the only real complaint I have is that in the past two weeks since my husband has been there is that there are more and more patients coming in and they need to get a few more aids to help out. Those there are doing a great job, but they are spread a little thin as more people come to live there.

LOOK SOME PLACE ELSE!!!
I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEW; JUST ONE BIG MARKING [Removed]. NOTHING BUT NICE PICTURES THEY SHOW YOU ON THEIR FACEBOOK AND OTHER WEB SITES, THE CARE IS TERRIBLE!! MOST OF THE WORKERS ARE LAZY, PEOPLE ARE ESCAPING AND [Removed], THE FOOD IS TERRIBLE, MOST OF THE WORKERS ARE VERY UNSURE OF THEMSELFS AND ARE NOT TRAINED TO ADDRESS BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS. MOST OF THE CARE WORKERS ARE NOT STNA, (STATE TESTED NURSES AID) ALOT OF THEM DO NOT WEAR GLOVES OR WASH THEIR HANDS. YOU HAVE TO SUPPLY YOUR OWN WASH TOWELS AND TOILET PAPER FOR YOUR LOVE ONE AT THIS PLACE, FURTHER MORE; THEY ARE LOCKED IN A DARK ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS TO LOOK OUTSIDE, MY FATHER WAS BOARDED TO DEATH IN THIS PLACE. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR OUR FAMILY; WE HAD MY FATHER MOVED OUT OF THIS PLACE HE IS MUCH HAPPY!! LOOK SOME PLACE ELSE!!!

Needs some improvement...
The Lantern of Saybrook has been a good fit for my loved one, but the place needs more staff. Right now, the nurse's aides don't only take care of the residents, they do housekeeping, activities, and serve meals in the dining room. I know they try their best and they are the sweetest girls, but they need help. My biggest concern is the fact that the dining room also known as the common area, is so dark. They don't really have windows or any natural lighting which can be very depressing. The meals served are good, and if the residents are still hungry they could ask for more.

Care for a loved one.
I like the care that is given here. The staff is outstanding and caring. It is very clean and taken care of. They offer him a great variety of food that he is really enjoying. They do offer him alot of activities that he is not participating yet. The care and value are worth all that is offered here. We recommend this community for others needing good care.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Ohio regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Ohio regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Lantern of Saybrook 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
