When my father passed away everyone was compassionate. Additionally it was the only facility that didn't smell bad.

Quality of Care has recently declined
Overall experience - during last few months there because they wanted to get him out of there even though he rarely left his room. Friendliness of staff was good for nursing and meal provision staff. Front office person was the difficult person to deal with. Quality of care - great to start and poor during last few months. Meals/dining were pretty good but they wouldn't pull him out of room to eat with others. He has to be prompted or he will stay in room alone and eat. Activities - fair - again, people rarely pulled him out of the room to encourage to attend. If he said he didn't care to go they left him alone. With elderly people, unless they're sick or don't feel well, you sometimes have to give more encouragement to leave their room. First 9 months were pretty good as far as with all staff but last 3 months were the worst

Review for Karolwood Gardens Norfolk
Would not recommend based off management. We were pitched that they would be able to support our dad's needs as he has brain cancer and they had a dementia care unit. However, that was not the case at all. They threatened to kick him out at various times if we didn't move him in time (which was hard as both my sister and I lived out of state), and management was extremely unsympathetic to my dads needs. Essentially, they let him in with the promise that it would be great just for our money, and threw him to the curb. Thankfully the nurses were extremely kind.

Lazy and arrogant
The majority of the staff are lazy. There are exceptions such as [names removed]. You can tell they really care. I encountered a “med tech” tonight who claims she is a nurse. I asked her if she could do my mother’s laundry or I volunteered to do it myself. She looked indignant and said she was a “nurse” and she didn’t do that kind of work. All she did was pass meds. She is clearly not a nurse because true nurses will always help a patient — no questions asked. She was very rude and disrespectful. Did not know how to take a blood pressure (a nurse? Really?). So lazy and no pride in her job. I was RN/BSN before I went back to school and now am an MD. I will do anything for a patient. - bathe them, clean them up, change sheets etc. It’s about caring. Something this individual knows nothing about! She needs to go work at Wendy’s or something.

Staff has poor communication with families regarding issue/concerns from family. We picked this community for our loved one, because of the rate price lock for life. Nice community , poor communication skills with Director and Nursing staff. I would recommend to other families. The marketing director is fantastic.

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry to hear that you feel communication skills are lacking. I provided my cell phone number and email address to all family members. I am on call 24 hours a day seven days a week 365 a year. I am always available to family members. I do respond to emergent text messages, emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Professional, courtesy, dictates that if something is not an urgent matter, we do have 24 business hours to reply. For example, a billing issue with dictate that we would respond within 24 business hours. I will review your concern with the nursing staff as well. Please feel free to reach out to me to discuss. My number is 804-366-2612. Kindest regards, Heather

We toured with Karolwood Gardens and it was too small (resident size) and seemed under-resourced. It was a bit depressing as well.

Not As Promised
I would not recommend Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. I would advise going to a more established community. The nursing staff was very accommodating and kind, but the administration was absolutely awful and not accommodating. It was too new and was unable to meet the services of my dad. They were very hard to get ahold of and impatient, and I was extremely disappointed with how they managed my father's care. I felt awfully frustrated because they took in my dad without being able to meet his needs and then kicked him out when it was too much, even though they told us they could care for him.

I am sorry you had a bad experience. We have discharged anyone for not being able to meet their needs? Are you sure your loved one was at Karolwood Gardens at Norfolk? We have a designated person in charge 24 hours a day. I provide my personal cell number to all family members, staff and residents. They are welcome to call or text at any time. The Department of Social Services has guidelines for admission and retention of residents. Those guidelines are under 22VAC40-73-310. At any time your loved one's condition changes or he is a harm to himself, or others discharge planning must occur per DSS. If you would like to discuss further my cell number is 804-366-2612. Kind Regards, Heather

The Jury is still out
My loved one lives at this facility and there are still a few issues that we are working on. Her apartment is so much superior to so many other facilities that we looked at and is more affordable. The monthly fee is a flat rate. They were actually so desperate for residents that they gave my loved one a lifetime rate when she signed/moved in. Moving into a facility was a big adjustment for my loved one and I feel like this facility had a less than ideal approach to that. The Executive Director is hard to deal with and very strict, but we've done it. Logically so, but it's been hard to take it all in and act accordingly. The strict setting has been an adjustment, but everyone has adapted. The building had a change of ownership to a private equity company over a year ago and renovations began and are still ongoing. To me, private equity and healthcare do not go together at all. This facility agreed to being able to accommodate a special diet due to the medical needs of my loved one. We're working with her Doctor and the dietician at the facility to be able to find a way to successfully accommodate the special diet, that is still ongoing. They've seemingly gone out of their way to try to accommodate it, but it's been a process and it's still ongoing. I don't think that I would recommend this facility to family and friends, all things considered. Not right now, at least.

I know moving into an assisted living is hard. We do not offer a flat rate at all times. We did offer a special earlier in the year. We do ask that our residents abide by a code of conduct. They sign a resident agreement on admission that outlines the rules, rights and conduct of residents. This is to ensure that our residents and staff are safe. We also have rules and guidelines from DSS that assisted livings must follow as well. I am sorry if you feel that is strict. A Licensed Dietitian reviews all menus for compliance. For example, Renal Diets. A M.D. writes an order for all diets. Unfortunately we can’t provide 1:1 chef services for each resident’s preference. But, we do provide an alternate meal list. Private equity is a group of investors. Just like any for-profit they are concerned with being successful. I see that as a positive. This ensures that the resident’s receive quality healthcare. Atlantis Senior Living owns communities in Florida, Virginia and recently North Carolina. They are a thriving growing company that truly cares about the elderly. If you still have concerns, please reach out. My personal cell number is available to all. As always; you are welcome to email, call or text. Kindest Regards, Heather

Our experience at this facility was nothing short of a nightmare. The marketing person was great, but she oversold. The room was not clean when we arrived. My loved one said that the care staff yelled at her and mocked her when she had an accident getting to the bathroom. I could go on, but I would prefer to never think of this place ever again.

Wonderful Community
They are wonderful. Meals and meds on time for my father-in-law. Friendly staff always helpful when we have questions. Would like for them to knock on resident's door to invite to group activities. We have told father-in-law about the activities but he forgets. Always clean and refreshed (no strange smells, no messes in the floor).

Not Family Friendly
My wife was in the Lakewood (Memory Care) section of Province Place of DePaul, with middle to late-stage Alzheimer's. To the caregivers, housekeeping, maintenance, activities, kitchen, all the staff, for their care and service I give an A-plus (5+ stars). They provide excellent, friendly care and service. But concerning Family Relations, I'm assigning the new director a D-minus (1.5 stars), which brings my overall rating for Province Place of DePaul down to only 3.5 stars. I'm assuming that this is the new director's first time overseeing an assisted living facility, and hoping that she will improve with experience. Granted, my wife died on Thanksgiving day, with Friday being another day off for some workers, but refusing to allow a husband to enter Friday and remove needed furniture for out of state relatives arriving for the funeral was, to say the least, not good family relations. And then simply not responding to an emailed request for access on Saturday, Sunday or Monday compounded the offense. My wife's bed could have easily been taken out within about 15 minutes, giving me the needed extra bed at home. As it turned out, though, my son bought a cot so he had a place to sleep after driving all the way from Wisconsin to attend the funeral. Again I say that I only hope experience will improve the director's consideration for family members.

We made the right choice.
My mother-in-law died peacefully at 97 after two years in P.P. She started in a gorgeous apartment there with my f-i-l, now 90. As her dementia progressed, she moved down to the "memory care" unit. He moved to a studio apartment. She was so well loved by staff. He's been there 4 years now. My f-i-l, a more difficult person, has grown to love the place. He enjoys the many activities, the other residents and, of course, the staff. The food there is always delicious, according to him, the other residents, and yours truly. At $42,000 a year for him, it's really a very good deal. The residents are respected, clean, loved, and appreciated. I love the staff. The place itself is beautiful. My husband and I can travel and know that my f-i-l is safe and well-cared for. We sure made the right choice.

Good Community for the Most Part
My mother is doing pretty well with her move to this community. The location of the community is very convenient for me to travel to. For the most part I know she is safe, and receiving good care. Most of the staff is good, they are kind, helpful. Everything is working in a positive direction for us here at this community, and I would recommend it.
