good facilities; mediocre activities
The building is nice, with comfortable apartments. The housekeeping keeps everything clean and orderly. The food is good, though the dining room service can be slow.
But the activities scheduled are pretty mediocre. They used to be better with the other lifestyle director. There isn't much offered that isn't an exercise class. I was led to believe this was only a temporary thing. Even during Covid there were more interesting activities.

My family and loved one have had a great experience with the community. The community is always clean when we visit our loved one. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The community is beautiful with great activities and there are meals provided. Overall, this is a community we would recommend to others.

Friendly Staff
It's vey clean. The friendliness is outstanding. The staff tries to fix things, and they are constantly upgrading things. They try hard to accomodate people. The waiters and waitresses in the cafeteria really work. The food is excellent. There is no problem with the food. There is plenty of activities, and things to do. The value for the money is good.

Poor Experience
Many issues at Five Star. They are understaffed. Staff are not adequately trained. Management & corporate are totally unresponsive to resident needs.
Food is poor--not nutritious, presentation is awful, usually over-cooked & not enough variety. Wait time for meals is long. The relatively new computerized dining system has not made an improvement. In fact, it's worse because servers aren't properly trained. The dining room manager isn't not on the floor supervising staff. If Five Star dining services were a restaurant, they'd be out of business in a flash.
Activities are the same things repeated. There's no creativity in programming.
Widespread boredom & depression among residents are ignored. This is critical. Residents justifiably feel no one cares or listens.
There is no value for the high price. Go elsewhere.

As you know when the COVID-19 crisis started we suspended meal service in our dining rooms and curtailed many of our activities, replacing them with nutritious meals we deliver to our residents and in-room activities and other programming to keep residents engaged. Five Star Premier Residences Of Chevy Chase
Always extremely clean. They have payed a lot of attention to the Covid-19 pandemic and have taken a lot of extra precautions to protect the residents. My mother has had no complaints and enjoyed the activities they were offering before the community went on lock down. We both enjoy the food and I have eaten there on several occasions. Would definitely recommend.

Serious concerns
My mother lives at 5 Star now and although she very much likes her apartment and it is close to me, the dining experience is poor. Quality of food is inconsistent. The service is slow and often poor. Often the residents need to wait 30-60 minutes for a table at dinner time. The management is not responsive to complaints and the facility is not staffed appropriately.
Of equal concern is security is not a priority. The garage door has been broken and permanently open for weeks allowing anyone to come in.

We do track seating times and strive to seat people in a timely fashion so they can enjoy their dining experience, including their socialization with friends. We recently have upgraded our ordering system with the latest in technology to provide even better timeliness in our services so we are hopefully that this will help greatly. We have already seen an immediate impact as recent as this past weekend. I invite you to reach out to the Executive Director for a personal tour of the dining room and new systems so we can work with you on this and get any additional issues resolved. The garage door is scheduled to be fixed very soon and we have beefed up security in the meantime while we wait on the part. Our 24 hr security staff would be glad to accompany your mother to and from anytime if she’d ever like. We apologize for not communicating this to our residents as we should have – again, thank you for bringing all this to our attention.

Nice staff and rooms, food is a big issue and management unresponsive
I love my apartment and the service staff. I am not happy with management's lack of responsiveness to my repeated requests for improvements to the food. Specifically I and many of the residents need to limit salt and sugar and avoid red meat. Our non- red meat choices are extremely limited and repititious. Sometimes they trigger other dietary issues. For example I don't eat red meat tin pet because I have high cholesterol; options like cheese lasagna are not good options. Moreover food is very salty and often poor quality fatty protein. Management insists salt isn't used but I have had 2 recent bouts of congestive heart failure even though I take a diuretic and several of us notice that when we are at 5 star our ankles blow up, yet when we visit family or go away the problem stops. Visitors to 5 star considering a move should know that the lunches provided on those visits are a far cry from the food served at dinner and would be well advised to pay a surprise dinner time visit to make sure the real food works for them. In addition there have been a lot of cutbacks in the food since I arrived that seem financially driven. Choices are fewer, repetition is greater and portions are smaller. They run out of specialty entrees and popular desserts early often leaving later diners with cheap substitutes and frozen store bought pound cake. Fresh berries are no longer a regular option, other fruit underripe and inedible. Even when fresh fruit is abundant and in season it rarely makes its way to our table. For example Watermelon was served once or twice the entire summer. I understand they are cooking for a large group and do not expect high end restaurant quality food but tasty healthy eating consistent with doctors' orders seems to me a fundamental right if your population is elderly.
In addition fresh eggs are served twice a month. Th rest of the time breakfast is precooked on mass and cold and while I don't eat eggs my visiting grandchildren and children deemed them inedible and speculated that they are powdered. For what we pay that's pretty unacceptable.
Finally there is no respect for resident's dietary requirements. I've been here several years and have lost 15 pounds I didn't need to lose because I won't eat food that isn't prepared well or compliant with my doctor's guidelines. Others who are supposed to eat lean meals with lots of fresh vegetables have gained dangerous amounts of weight.

My apartment is perfect
Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase is going well overall. The lower level employee are super. My apartment is perfect, the maintenance is perfect. Everything is just fine but fore the money we are paying there are some issues. The chefs assistant and manager are just so kind but we all know that they cant cook for those that need health food. They have to cook for the masses. I understand that but food is so important to me. The good is so good but the bad is very bad so it's so hard to rate. The housekeeper couldn't be lovelier. The service people are absolutely lovely. The residents are just so lovely too.

Nice place overall, a few issues to work on
Overall they do a good job at Five Star Residences of Chevy Chase. It is a nice looking, clean facility, and for the most part the staff have been friendly and helpful. My loved one has had a few specific complaints. He says that both the dining service and the food itself could stand a little improvement, and has also mentioned that the elevators are prone to breaking down.

Very friendly staff and residents
I'm very happy with how things have gone at Five Star of Chevy Chase, they're doing a great job. I really appreciate that they went out of their way to help her get settled into the community. They learned about her, and then took her around and introduced her to residents who had similar interests and experiences, and she's been getting along great with everyone. The facility itself is very nice looking, and the staff are all friendly and helpful. They do a great job looking out for their residents, and the meal service is excellent. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking in the area!

This is a beautiful place. ...
This is a beautiful place. I ate lunch there on Sunday after touring on Friday, service was great, their menu was marked with vegan options and 'contains milk', they have a lot of variety each day. They have a small but swimmable pool, a fitness center FULL of machines (but no people the two times I saw it). It is larger than Kensington Park (about 300 in Independent Living, I was told, while KP has 60-65), so opportunity to find friends and interesting people or activities seems good. The community fee is $4000. and they claim they never take less than that (they told me earnestly that it is what funds the building rehab that is constantly ongoing). They have four styles of one-bedroom apt, I saw two that are similar except for bathtub/shower arrangement. The one with the shower (which I think I'd prefer) has had kitchen counter and cupboard upgrades. Both are renting for 3499 / month for first year (including brkfst and dinner daily). Each of these has a balcony facing east, so gets the morning sun and afternoon shade. They are both on the 4th floor and look out onto Connecticut Ave, but are quiet when the sliding door is closed. The view (or lack thereof) is one factor in pricing...on the other side of the building there is a golf course, so those apts are pricier. And the higher the floor, the higher the price. Each apt has a small Dish-washer (BONUS!) and washer/dryer set in the apt. Also a bonus. Location is great: very close to Connect. and East-West Hwy, so would likely be able to drive to any of my doctors within 15 mins. Parking at residence is free. If I am unable or don't feel like driving they have a van that goes around a certain route that includes one or two of my docs. They also have a 'club car with driver' for $22/hour, they charge in 15-min increments. They also have a single floor of 'assisted living' apartments. They are the same as those on the other floors but cost $6200-$6500 with additional care.
